When people first heard him they thought he was a Tall Black Guy from Chicago. In the 1980's most notably from 1983-1986 The Brits were next to Australia the hottest music import. This Song went to Number One and the folks who wrote it were Matthew Stock, Scott Aitken, and Pete Waterman who is now a Legend on The UK Music Scene, Simon Cowell used to follow him around like a puppet wanting to get his foot in the door. Those Guys were the hottest Songwriting Team in the UK in the 1980's. They also worked with Dead Or Alive (You Spin Me Round) that Flo Rida later Sampled as well as Venus by Banarama who not only were the First Girlband from teh UK to go to Number One in the US kicked the door open for future UK Girlbands. They also wrote Say I'm You're Number One for Princess and in later Years Pete helped launch the Careers of Steps 1996-2001 and Girls Aloud on Popstars The Rivals in 2002.

I don't care what race, nationality, or creed you are, when you first saw the vid your jaw dropped!!!!! Instead of a big burly black man here was this skinny, geeky, white boy with the most amazing voice. Definitely a mind fu%#.

In an age of shrinking social mobility in the UK it's worth pointing out that Rick was essentially the tea boy or gofer at Stock Aitken & Waterman's studios - which operated a bubblegum pop production line in Britain, with some success abroad. His credibility, as a result, was nil from the outset. However, he has kept the voice and now he almost feels like a soul giant!

Weirdly he basically got his start largely by accident - he was the drummer in a band whose singer left so he took over the duties. Peter Waterman heard him and liked his voice and offered him a job working for Stock Aitken Waterman largely to do odd jobs, mic checks, setting up equipment (and legendarily making the tea) etc with the potential of using him as a studio musician and backing singer. Nobody really expected him to be a solo artist. Then they realised when he was doing the mic checks etc that his voice was really, really good and that he might be able to disprove the notion that all the SAW acts were bad singers whose vocals were all manipulated until they sounded good thanks to studio enginering and so rolled the dice with him.
@htbald14 жыл бұрын
Rick Astley was an amazing singer! The problem was at the time, how to market this cute white boy with this soulful voice, same thing happened to Lisa Stansfield " all around the world", another great 80s singer who didn't get the love from America she should have because they didn't know how to market her either. Nowadays it doesn't matter what color you are or what music you do, it's easier to find a market for it because of the internet.
