"having a camera in my hand is 5-10% of it" PREACH! I didn't expect that part, but it's so true

Interesting video. Just a few thoughts on this myself. The expression about doing what you love and you won't work a day in your life is more about meaning you will love what you do. Something like 50% of people hate their jobs in North America and would be doing anything else if it paid their bills. And the bit about handing over RAW files it depends on what kind of jobs you are doing. Like a friend of mine who is a wedding photographer doesn't have clients asking for RAW files because the entire point is they want you to deliver a finished product. Nobody is asking for the RAWs of their wedding to edit them themselves. Whereas I have a friend who does product photography that does hand over RAW files on the regular and in that case it is largely an IP concern. And as for film photography as someone who has worked in the darkroom I can say for sure what is printed often looks very different from the base negative. So even on film getting it right in camera is a bit overstated. I mean the only thing you absolutely could not change was focus. I have even done some pretty drastic crops on the enlarger.

Can you explain why giving up your raws should cost more? I naively thought it would cost more for processed shots. Asking from a film photographer.

Great question, Jackson! There’s a multitude of reasons, but for me it mainly boils down to file size. Most clients today need social media content, so they only pay for web-res images. They get to save money, and we get to save ourselves from a legal battle down the road.

“Niche down”. Only a non-photographer would give that advice.
