Thanks for the flashbacks to the 2010 Irish University Rowing Champs in Cork where I fell in about 150m in and got run over by the umpires launch 😳🤣 It’s pretty much my party story now. I love the juxtaposition of how quick you go in in reality as shown by the video, and how it feels like when you’re going in it’s a slow, lingering slide. And that moment of clarity where you know you’ve reached the point of no return.

Being ready to share bad moments along with the good is what makes your channel involving and interesting. I have seen Aram's video on your capsize and he makes some good points. But one thing I don't think he, or other comments, have mentioned is hand position on recovery. The hands look to be above each other as they cross over, with too much vertical distance between the handles. This pushes the boat to your right and may be forcing you to compensate with a slightly asymmetrical body shape. Getting the left hand a little in front of the right would reduce the vertical distance, help set the boat level on the recovery, and give you a more stable platform from which to take the catch. Great progress so far though, and more boat speed to come.
@CameronBuchan2 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct. Hand position needs work. Another thing I'm keeping an eye on. For me alot of the work comes before that though, confidence in the boat for example. Should help me get everything in a better position. Of course I can still work on positions while not super focusing on the confidence aspect!

How about rolling out a playbook: tailwind/cloudy: do this ; glass water/rainy: do that; headwind/rain: do this; tailwind/rain: do that ... ? spell out all the relevant conditions and what to do in each case? Once you have a list, you can also seek out the conditions you haven't faced yet (if possible!), just to be sure to cover them all and be readier?

@@CameronBuchan When I was a kid, my partner and I (double sculls) were dueling a team from a more or less friendly club from a neighbouring town practically every race. In the important, serious races (like international regattas in Cologne or Hamburg, or german junior championships) they always beat us (or rather: kicked us out of the regatta by obliterating us in the heats...). But on the small regattas in spring and autumn, we often were always miles ahead. Why? Well, bad weather and high seas. We had an old wooden Empacher that was a little bit to big for us (read: built for 100kg while we were barely averaging 80), but that meant it could take on quite a lot of water and still stay rowable. Also, our club and traing ground was at a big lake, while theirs was on a canal. On smooth water, we had no chance. Their technique was perfect, plus they were better physically. But on a choppy racetrack with ample wind and waves, our experience with bad weather trumped their skill and fitness. PS: my father's team once won a race by showing up in the wrong boat. Race was coxless four, but they went out in a coxed four (minus the cox). Why? That gave them extra buoyancy. As the story goes, half of the boats didn't make it to the finish line, and they were the only crew that was able to somewhat feather their blades after the first couple hundred metres. On the same stretch of water (Berlin-Gatow) some 30 or 25 years later our club nearly managed to sink three C-gigs. Just barely made it to our destination - water level in the boats was getting uncomfortably close to the seat rails. The bad thing was that we were on a multi-day tour, and found out the hard way that not all of our watertight bags really were...

Thanks for the excellent videos of racing at Piediluco! Raced in similarly rough water there in 1995 (USA HPL2X). Having raced in Indianapolis so many years helped us prepare, but no one could race in the conditions you did without it being more a "muscular" race. It looks like your cockpit was not completely filling with water, so that was good. Looking at the stroke that pulled you in, it looks like you went in "shallow" pitchwise on that spoon, driving it deep and pulling you under. Could be your forearm was tightened to the point that you could not lock it back on the face of the oarlock when you entered the water. I'd suggest trying tacky grips which helps you relax your forearms/hands more when wet. I used to use grips for tennis rackets for this reason. Looking forward to more. Best of luck.
@CameronBuchan2 жыл бұрын
I think you're spot on actually. My forearms were going fast and the feathering was becoming an issue. Already experimenting with different grips!

Cam, good vid. You’ve been baptised in Italy! Just one observation. Your arms appear to be slightly bent during the drive phase. Maybe it’s the camera. I think bent arms cause tension in the arms and shoulders, which reduces efficiency & power.
@CameronBuchan2 жыл бұрын
It was a pleasure! Yes for sure, the bent arms aren't helping. I'm more on the side they are a result of something else, ie, lifting or too tense vs bent arms being the initial cause
@jameswalker29982 жыл бұрын
We have all fallen in at some point. It's how we learn to get better. Watermanship skills is something you need to work on. That only comes with experience so give it time. Once mastered the relaxation in poor condition will come. Just keep getting back on the horse (or boat) and having another go. As a coaching tip I'll mention the tap down at the finish to extract the spoons and not to feather out. As always thanks for sharing your adventure #yamsquad

You have way more confidence than me racing in bad weather water in a single!! I just raced summer nationals and it was exactly like the water you were in when you flipped but it was a tail crosswind. I rowed really well on the first half but caught 3 crabs which lead me to slow down because the water got more choppy in the last half. Because of that I didn’t advance to semi finals. I didn’t flip but I was pissed and almost wanted to give up on rowing completely because of my performance. Im not very good at rowing in that type of water than on flat water. Any advice on how to be more confident?

On the subject of stability, do you have any lateral pitch on the gates? At this level, I'm guessing positive lateral pitch (pins leaning outwards from the base) is probably not going to be the best, so either pins vertical or maybe 0.5 to 1-degree negative could help. Especially in poor water, if you can't get out to full reach at the catch, you might you notice the instability of positive lateral pitch even more in the second half of the drive.
@CameronBuchan2 жыл бұрын
I'm actually discussing this right now! Last time I measured I was on 0 degrees. Will be interesting if it is still there after travelling.
