The reason being Shimano brake fluid here costs $18 for 1 liter jug. And you cannot get smaller quantity. 1) It's stupidly expensive for mineral oil. 2) What the hell am I gonna do with 1 L when brake system takes what....30-40 mL? No way I'm gonna bleed my brakes 20 times in my bike's lifetime.

When I rode trials, alot of us ran our magura hs33's on water, or water with a drop of anti freeze in winter. It made the breaks less spongy, more responsive, and lighter to pull. You'd get about a year out of the seals, but most trials riders broke a lever or something before then and had to get a new brake anyway! I'd be more than happy to use baby oil in a pinch :)
@walz19862 жыл бұрын
Doesn't some manufactures also use special breakfluids that are basically water with anti freeze and of course some othe viscosity reagents? Like for example SRAM. They normally perform as well as hydrolic breaks with oil. But of course they can freeze and that means they are a bit more sensible to low degrees(The brakes may not work or the water expands below 4 °C and this may damage the tubes). But on higher temperatures water does not expand as much as oil...
@vicentesaenz5602 жыл бұрын
I remember doing the same....But I just used anti freeze as it was more common at home than distilled water. I used to grease the pistons from the outside every now and then and seals lasted forever....I also remember scratching and adding waterproofing the rim so it was sticky to the pads. But down slopes the question was what to sacrifice: the hebo shoes or the new brake pads.

Seals and oils must be compatible, or the oils will slowly(or rapidly) soften and expand the seals... and fail at a bad time(usually). What works for a tractor's hydraulics might not work well in cycle brakes, fork oil, differential lube, etc. There's a reason why there are so many different lube formulations, and it's not about making more money(for the vast majority of lubes). It's about application and compatibility. Sure, you can cheap out on maintenance, but why would you do that on something that keeps you out of the trees?

I've been running pure Mineral Oil (the non-baby formula) for years now, and will say that it holds up as well as name brand brake fluid. But with 1 major caveat. If you're going down a long hill and just riding your brakes, the Mineral Oil does get spongier faster, but I've had Metallic pads loose their friction coefficient and the rotor get red hot even before the brakes became really spongey. Yes, the name brand stuff will last longer, but depending on your riding habits, the Mineral oil off the shelf vs brand name stuff might not even make a difference. But even then, I feel Mineral Oil can be had for so much cheaper than the brand name stuff, that you could probably replace the fluid at least 100 times with mineral oil before getting close to spending the same amount on the brand name stuff. Personally, I've gone through about half of a 16oz (473ml) bottle of Mineral oil at $2, exchanging the fluid pretty much every other month. At that rate, it's still way cheaper than the brand name stuff that usually sells 100ml for $10 or more.
@sebastianjost4 жыл бұрын
The thing is: 100ml bottles of Shimano oil cost 10$ 1l containers cost about 15 to 20$. It seems you pay more for the packaging process then for the actual content. So if you buy large enough quantities, the price gets very low too. And even then: you can spend 30-60$ on a dropper lever, 10-30$ on grips and so on... 10-20$ for brake oil isn't that big of a deal. But then again, if other stuff works fine for you, save money if you think it's worth it.
@tunatony3 жыл бұрын

Hydraulics is the compression of fluid (which is impossible) so that a movement at one end equals a movement at the other end. You could use water in your brakes and still get the braking effect, it just might now last long due to corrosion. Engine coolant with an anti-corrosion additive might be a good alternative.
@TheButlerNZ4 жыл бұрын
You can actually compress fluids, just not as easily as air... (Water compresses about 1% at 2000psi) and water boils at a relatively low temperature, creating steam and dramatically increasing pressure. Water is also not a very effective lubricant with seals compared with oil. Also you may have noted that water in brake fluid stops the brakes working... A lot of that is due to the water boiling.. and brake fluid (ie. dot4) is hygroscopic.

The only problems with using something other than the recommended fluid is viscosity at different temperatures, and how the seals will react to a different chemical. There is no concern with boiling point as in motor vehicles. They wouldn't get hot enough for that.
@AEYRivera4 жыл бұрын
Hi Seth. Great channel. Always entertaining. Maybe you can do a "Viscosity" test between different mineral brake oils? Like a drip test or something like it to compare viscosities? Johnson's baby oil has a baby oil lite which is less viscous so it will defiinitely have a different effect.

I use LHM from the motor factors in my mineral oil brakes. Shimano fluid - £20/litre. Generic LHM - £6/litre. No brainer. When you're changing fluid regularly, as you should, the saving makes a difference.

@6:24 "Brake oil is far from expensive" - maybe south of the border... but in Canada it's $94/liter!!! That *IS* literally ripping off customers with snake oil. No f'n way I'm paying that when Johnson's is $3 for 591ml.

Synthetic ATF. Cheaper than baby oil. You might already have it/need it. Higher boiling temp. Rubber conditioners. Already does similar type of work.

What you’re saying makes sense, some folk talk like you’re missing out by not doing this, but you’ve given a fair balanced view of “yeah it’ll probably be fine, but just use the recommended brake oil.” Good experiment, saves me ever having to try it for myself!

i beleive if the brakes are new you can use either dot4 brake fluid or ile say baby oil because its all ive ever used but once you have used either you cant use the other because that is what will damage the rubber seals

I put some baby oil in my bike, I diluted it with a bit of soapy water so it wasn't so viscous. It works like a charm.
@1stAshaMan4 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering how that mix worked since mineral oil is insoluable in water.
@SyrpiC00L4 жыл бұрын
@@1stAshaMan If you add a bit of soap into the mix, it does a good job of combining the oil and the water to some extent. It won't be perfect, but it will be enough to not cause problems with braking. *Also if someone were to try this, I would suggest them to make sure none of the foam gets into the brake hose or other components as that could cause air bubbles.*

I've been running Johnson's finest in my Shimanos for months now with no obvious problems. This idea saved my day when I found myself needing a refill miles from the nearest open bike shop and I haven't seen a reason to change it since. Thanks for the great bike hack Seth!

@@waleedassaf1836 eventually changed brakes as caliper where leaking a bit but they where very old. The baby oil seemed fine, would use again if needed.

I ran drug store mineral oil in my brakes and it worked great until the temps went down. Below freezing, the oil gets thick and it got to the point that applying brakes becomes difficult and the pads barely release at all.

Brake oil IS expensive now - 500ml from a local shop was $44 (June 2023 Greater Vancouver area). I bought a quart of Aeroshell 41 for $19 CDN - haven't tested yet but it will be fine.

I slam trails, I bleed once a year for good measure. But I’ve had baby oil in my brakes for years, have at it people. $40 CAD for shimano or tektro’s oil, and close to $70 for rockshox, haha.

I've read some argument from Americans time and time again - 'xyz is cheap, why would you use anything else? don't be a cheapass!". But things aren't always cheap in other parts of the world. That US$25 bottle is equivalent NZD$35 at today's exchange rate but my local price is $60! That IS a lot of money for some rebadged mineral oil. Especially when I'm just riding a budget hybrid/commuter around town, not everyone is careening down the side of mountains. The 100ml bottle 10% by volume is 50% by price - an even more insane rip off. I've been reading up on this topic, was interesting to see your practical experiences.

I had the same idea with my tractor's hydraulic system, so I researched it. Proper oils will usually include rust inhibitors and detergents so that they'll cope better with any water contamination that gets into the system. This is honestly a lot more likely on a car or tractor where the reservoirs have lids that just open by hand. Tractors even have quick disconnects to remove front loaders etc, so they're way more likely to get contamination in the oil. On a bike the system is sealed and there's really no reason to require special additives in the oil.

Brake fluid is hygroscopic and attracts water... which boils and renders your brakes 'less than optimal'.
