This past weekend I wandered into Maple Street Guitars and stumbled across my first real vintage guitar, a 1965 Gibson SG Jr. This guitar is a ringer and has a great story.

This is only the beginning. As someone who purchased their first vintage guitar a few years back ('60 ES-330) I have since purchased 4 other vintage guitars and spent more money than I ever thought I would on an instrument... Once you open that door it raises the bar and makes it difficult to not want more.

I started collecting action figures last year. First it was just a few hundred bucks, but quickky got up to many thousands. I had fun buying them, but kind wish I had bought a couple great guitars instead. At least I finally got new pickups for my Les Paul that had a half-dead treble pickup. (498T, now Pearly Gates.)

Great video, Rhett! I had a lot of fun documenting this fantastic SG Jr. with you. I feel both fortunate and honored to have been part of this guitar's history; and, I'm grateful that it will rock on in the hands of a great player, who will respect it and love it as much as I did. May it serve you well! - Lindsay *Reposted since we did this previously from the wrong KZbin account :(

I always felt Pete Townshend’s SG on “Live at Leeds” is one of the greatest guitar tones ever recorded. Not sure if anyone agrees but it goes from raging animal to the cleanest most beautiful chime. Old mahogany and p-90’s. (And a wall of High Watts)😊

Pete's tone in the Woodstock movie does it for me. It's so cool, the moment the band gets announced and you hear the hum of those Hiwatts. The Woodstock version of "Sparks" that can be seen in "The Kids Are Alright" is also killer.

I also have a 2020 SG standard and do love it. A few minor issues in build quality, not super deal breaking but for 2k you'd expect more. The pickups are a pretty hot and I might swap them out for some lower output ones, but it plays so well and does feel great. Two of the dots are a bit smudgy, the lining up of the fingerboard and the neck separates a tiny but noticeable amount from fret 3-1. Very rarely is you thumb wrapped around back there but it's still a noticeable finishing flaw. The picture that came with also showed a dirty workstation and wasn't the greatest photo. Gibson are clearly cranking these things out, and while I do love my SG I know they can do better. I will say I went in and picked the one that stood out to me on the wall and when I plugged it in I did love it. So even though it has some flaws, it's still an inspiring and great instrument.

when I was 16 I saved all my money from working in a warehouse, watched the old / buy sell weekly for guitars and one day I saw a 74' SG Custom. I convinced my dad to drive about an hour out of the city to meet the seller where I bought my first real guitar. That was 20 years ago and I still pick it up everyday. Its not completely original and has its battle scars from its past life before coming into my possession, I have plans to eventually mod it to make pick up selection a little more dynamic. My first love I will never part ways with it.

I appreciate the draw and like most collectors, it's a passion but I'm so f'n glad I don't get sucked into this rabbit hole! "Tools" yes...for pro, "working musicians" is where they belong. Through my day gig I've seen at least 3 Drs collections, with the dentist in the group having at least 4 Dragons, a relic'd SRV and JH strat as well as numerous vintage Fenders and Gibsons. I heard him play at the music store where my brother-outlaw worked at the time and the guy could hardly play a lick. Ya, he really needed these. I'll just keep on keepin on with finding decent cheaper instruments and hopping them up - thank god for CNC! I loved the part where the pup was pulled on this guitar and the poor workmanship was exposed. You should see the absolute horrible craftmanship with my 74' BC Rich Eagle. It's a joke. Like some stoner with a router went at it and one of the spots the electronics cover is screwed barely has a c'hair of meat left between the slab and the cavity. Ya, no thx..

A long-time family friend has a nearly identical SG Jr. I believe his is a '62. He's the second owner and has kept it in terrific condition. He traded an LP back in the day for it. Not sure how happy he is with that deal int he long run but the SG is his baby. I had a '61 LP SG Standard 2xP-90s that had been through the wars: someone tried to saw off the upper horn, it partially cracked at the control cavity, had three different vibrato systems, someone sanded down the finish completely to bare wood, and a twice-broken headstock the second courtesy of Robin Trower's roadie way back in the mid-90's... twit. Oh, but that neck.... Wow. And, you cannot beat the sound of a P-90 in an SG.... Wish I hadn't sold mine... And I'm still looking for a Firebrand SG......... Good score, Rhett

I have the same guitar from the same year!. I got it from an uncle who bought it when he was in high school in the 70s for $75 and in the 90s he was about to take it to a local version of Goodwill. Luckily before he did that he had someone repair the fender amp he had with it and that guy told him DO NOT donate that guitar! The amp tech ended up with the amp unfortunately for me. Still not sure what it was, but I think it was a champ. I got to borrow the guitar as a teenager & eventually I paid him for it by roofing his house (my job at the time). They are truly awesome guitars and those P90s rip! I loved your slide playing on it & I'm sure you'll make lots of wonderful noises with it. Good move Brett Shultz!!!

If only I could play my gigs sitting down with my SG- bear to play standing up. My high school guitar was a ‘61 that I brought in ‘68 .. now I play the ‘61 reissue. You are gonna love this SG

Sweet SG, Rhett! @ 1980 I absolutely lucked into a 1955 Gibson Southern Jumbo Tobacco Sunburst for dirt cheap (it had some issues), but paid another $600 to have it restored. Played it for years and absolutely loved its deep rich murky acoustic blues sound, but had to sell it ten years back when unemployed to pay my mortgage. But I got a lot for it and paid my mortgage for 2 months and saved my house. Someday I'll find another old Gibby and buy it. Remember, one can never have too many guitars!

I picked up. ‘66 Jag a few years ago from the second owner (manufactured pre-CBS, but assembled just at the acquisition). I got lucky since it was a ‘barnyard’ find. I think 1966 was a very good year for Gibson and Fender!

My first guitar was a 1962 Fender Musicmaster and my amp was a Fender Vibro Champ from the same year. It wasn't vintage but it was pre CBS. My dad got it for me. My dad also left me a 1944 Gibson SJ. It's beat down and played hard. He took it on all of our camping trips. He took it down the Colorado river thru the grand canyon on one of those rafting trips. It still sounds and plays great. That's a beautiful SG! Congratulations! It sounds so good!

Picked up a 1967 Fender Coronado Wildwood II with a killer flame neck. Does something none of my other guitars can do and it has tons of vibe.

I got a 71 SG pro 1 that was modified to a pro 2, bare-bones body is the way to go and add your own electronics, got mine for 300.00 needing a refret job and a neck rod as the adjustment screw was broke, took off the fret board added a new rod, refretted it, added gibson mini humbuckers t-top's are my fav and vintage, and vintage pots from old am radios and Ta DA why vinatge pots, they have thick carbon vs printed carbon made n sold today... my fav is a Harmony F hole acoustic I got for 100 bare-bones, as is on eBay, again added a flat p-90 so i didn't have to drill a hole, the pole pieces are the magnet - as you get older acoustics have more vibe esp with a pickup, if you like his, look for a melody maker, I got a gibson melody maker in the late 80's for 100 cash all org, I learned on, prices are threw the roof now, and the new young generation love rap n hip hop and dont take time to learn or invest in musical instruments, when they can just download 'beats" and call it music, sadly.

I bought a new 2018 Gibson SG Jr similar to your vintage model. Turned out to be a great guitar. Simple and super fun to play. Sounds great. I used to have a 60's double cut Lest Paul Jr. That got stolen. I have a 2001 Les Paul Jr Historic reissue. I have a lot of vintage Martin 0-18's. Great sounds. Also have a rare Guild M90 solid body slab with 2 P90's. I like that guitar a lot. And a Wildwood Les Paul 56 cherry sunburst reissue with 2 P90's.
