Scotty I’ve been your student for a few years cuz I’m a car lover but not a great mechanic like you are! I studied your SUV suggestions and purchased a 2022 Mazda CX 5 off a lease with 20,000 miles on it, and it’s a gem! I followed your instructions on SUVs and Mazda, Toyotas, which I LOVE, and Hondas and I’m truly grateful and happy about my purchase. You’re a common sense guy and a great teacher! God bless you!!

The Nash/Rambler 232 and 258 cui inline 6 cylinder engines were tough as nails. I know both were still being used in AMC vehicles in the late '70's/early '80's - including Jeeps. The 232's (with a one-barrel carb) got surprisingly decent gas mileage in highway driving. The problem with AMC vehicles lay mainly in the quality (or lack thereof) of the bodies matched to those engines. AMC Gremlins, Pacers, Hornets and early Jeep CJ's....AMC used those engines everywhere.

My dad was a big Nash fan back in the day. He liked the gas mileage and the fact the front seats would fold down and he could sleep in the car on his fishing trips. I remember that they had a button under the clutch pedal to engage the starter. He got a used Rambler wagon in the early 60's that had a V8. About 250cid I think it was. It would do a burnout about 20 ft.

Looks just like my old Austin A35 under the hood. They speed tested them on the German autobahn believe it or not and they were very reliable as long as properly maintained. I also had a 64 Rambler American with a big grunty straight 6 that I rebuilt from a pile of parts and drove all over England and Sweden in the 80's. It had a galvanised under body which is why it survived the salt on the scandinavian roads in the winter. You dont need a lot of money to have fun with cool old cars and no bloody scan tool either...

The metropolitan was made by morris garage...MG. we actually had two and a nash cross country too. All 1954. The cross country looked just like the metropolitan, but bigger. The three were mechanically horrible. Bad everything. I remember that the linkage on the shifter would alway get crossed and we had to carry a big screwdriver in the car. (the met) it happened at traffic lights when you shifted into first. You had to quickly jump out of the car, open the hood and uncross the linkage before the people behind you got mad. Constant problems with those cars, but they are cute.

Nice ride- you deserve it. A car you can repair with a leatherman multitool.

Good choice! In a grid down situation you can still drive somewhere but fuel stations won’t be working.

My friends dad had one in the 60s. The chrome on the rear bumper was peeling off like old paint.

That engine is similar to the toyota 12R if the intake and exhaust are on the same side... same with the distributor but is a 1.6 compared to that 1.5

This definitely brings back memories as I rode in one with my Dad and my uncle back in the 60’s each of them drove them. Yes they were extremely economical on gas!! The challenge was getting parts and service we ended up doing our own because it was so unique. Good job Scotty

Back about 1957 Dad test drove a Metropolitan. I sat sideways in the back seat. Dad did not buy that car. It had an Austin engine, among other things. Of course, the Metropolitan is now collectible.

Some of the first interchanges laid down for the Eisenhower Interstate System were designed where 50 mph was the end of the world for common cars. You can tell, 30 mph clover leaf ramps!🤦‍♂️🤣
