Pro tip: You should really put either pool noodles on the racks, or a roof rack wrap to avoid denting the kayak when it’s bouncing on the road, or from over-tightening the straps. And I agree, NO RATCHET STRAPS. Lol. Just FYI-

Congrats on the kayak Mike! Hope you stick with it and look forward to more vids. There's definitely a learning/comfort curve when loading and unloading a kayak. Yes, no ratchet straps, folks tend to overtighten them and crack the kayak. Also, when possible, its easier to load the kayak from the back of the car. Just put an old doormat on the trunk, put the nose of the kayak on the lip of the trunk, move to back of the kayak, and push it up and forward on the roof rack. Finally, if you are going to drive on the highway with a kayak on your roof, I would recommend fore and aft tie downs. They add stability and help prevent wind wanting to lift the nose of the kayak when travelling at higher speeds on the highway.

As a long time kayak angler, get a moving blanket and place that on the car to 1. Prevent scratching your car up and 2. To help prevent the yak slipping on the car surface. Makes loading much easier and safer. Also use cam straps over ratchet straps. The reason is so you don’t over tighten the straps with the ratchet straps. Cam straps are ideal for year round use. Also get a PFD man, safety first! Congrats on moving into the kayak fishing world. It’s going to change the game for your fishing 100%. Tight lines

Drape a cheap bathroom floor mat (unused) over the edge of your car's roof where you initially loaded your boat and put the wheel side up first. This way it will slide very easily onto the car without damaging the paint and having the wheel off the ground will help it stay put as you maneuver around the boat. Start perpendicular to the car but once the boat is almost halfway up, start to pivot on the bath mat so the boat naturally falls into the rear rack. Then finish the lift and slide the front of the boat onto the front rack. I'm now disabled so I went with a different boat. I picked up a MyCanoe Duo. Light weight and folds to fit in my trunk.

You put yourself in a very dangerous situation, 1rod, being out there in thick winter clothing without a life vest. Things could have turned very badly for you, really quickly, if you had fallen in. You were also turning around haphazardly without having found your balance, like you're in a bass boat. I own a bass boat, and I've been kayak fishing for over ten years, and I can tell you that the styles of fishing between the two are very, very different. If you're going to show more kayakfishing on your channel, I urge you to do it the right way: to being with, learn the laws, always wear a life vest (pfd), have a signalling device like a whistle, learn which clothing is appropriate, and learn to self rescue. You're in a highly influential position, especially with many young people. As you know, your decisions don't affect only you. I recommend that you find a local kayak fishing forum around where you are (there are many all across the country). They can be a wealth of knowledge.

Make a suggesting when putting your boat on the roof of a car, when it's only one doing go to the rear, put the wheel end of the boat next to the rear wheel of the car and the other end to the back of the car and then lift the wheel end up onto the roof rack, then go to the other end and pick it up and push forward, that way you will not damage the car paint or the boat. When lashing down, apart from going over the top, also pin down diagonally and make sure you are connected to the boat, like at the bow and stern there should be ties or hole that is used to lash down on, stop the boat from shooting forward if you suddenly come to a stop or if you get hit up the rear it stops the boat going backward. You will learn over time the beast way for your self in the end
@lgoutdoors9273 жыл бұрын
Might want to try putting using one the tie down straps to assist loading the kayak. You can wrap it between the two cross bars and create a sling that you can rest the kayak on before loading it all the way.
