I ran 66 289 heads on my 302. I ported and polished the exhaust side only. Had the smaller set of chevy valves installed. Used 460 springs and 1.7 full roller rockers. I used a risky 270 cam with the 1.7 rocker it put me at 525 lift. Ran a 30 over dished piston stock rods and crank.
@jhutch14706 жыл бұрын
I would stay with the 351 heads. Use a thinner head gasket, after you check piston to valve clearance. While the heads are off, check the deck height of the pistons to the block deck. If the piston is farther than .060 to the chamber you will not get any quench. That means higher compression can cause detonation knock you can't tune out. Check your head gasket thickness. A simple change from say a .041 thickness to a .028 thickness will help. Oh, by the way. The 289 heads and the 302 heads identical valve size and chamber design. They were 52.2 to 55 cc chambers with 1.78 intake valves and 1.45 exhaust valves. The 351 heads will be MUCH better for the engine. One website you can find good info is cartechbooks.com

years ago I built a 70 302 small block for a 71 Comet GT. I ran a stock short block, with 70 302 heads that I ported extensively on the exhaust side. I also ran the 280 Comp Cam. Excellent camshaft! on top I had an old Edelbrock f4b intake, the Shelby copy and a 600 Holley. It would wind to 7000 with no problem. behind it was a C4 with a pinto stall converter and a 9-inch with 4:11 and a Traction Lok.. It would run 13:50s at 100 mph all day long on pump gas. Great combination! One word of caution though, you are definitely going to want screw in studs in those heads with that camshaft. If you run any kind of spring pressure it will pull those studs right out. Don't ask how I know...I agree with what you're saying about the trade-off for compression. the 289 heads will give you the compression you want, but you will definitely need to do some porting to get any kind of flow out of it. Looking forward to this build!

Gotta give you major props for having so many projects at 18 and going to college. I can barely handle 2 at 19 and having 2 jobs. I also think it would be cool to have some kind of car project later for the 289, like an old Mustang or maybe a Maverick. There has been so many truck projects maybe try a muscle car one. Thank you

flow bench both! set of heads 289, 302,351? then get a better matching cam for the better flowing heads , if its the higher cc 302 or 351 heads just get pistons, you are already in the motor. including! you can check this 20,000 mile motor out on the bottom side! really good idea! you might find 200k bearing and destroyed piston rings! (one cylinder with low compression hint hint!) you are in no rush any way. good rule of thumb do it right and check everything because you dont want to pull it back out after you just put it in..seriously! just build a motor so when you kill the current one in it now at the drag strip you can swap it out.

1. Vintage 1969 and 70 351w heads were a viable option in the 80's but not a direct bolt on .. required a water passage mod. Flowbenches = knowledge and are the thinking man's way to power. Iron GT40's are too cheap n good to waste time w / 351W heads. .. GT40's trounce the C90E/1969 and DOOE/1970 351w castings in flow/power. A Clevor SBF also a much more powerful option. Do a search on the 70/DOOE castings headflow vs GT40 heads, 2bbl Cleveland, 351N Dirt Track/Ford Racing and aftermarket heads 2. Compression is a sorry place to look for extra power and the gains are miniscule compared to the headache, drivability issues you'll be plagued with. 15 ish Horsepower to make your car undrivable or unstreetable? Always needing high octane not to detonate? Horrible choice .. You can get 15hp with a good Windage Tray or an Electric Fan upgrade and still run 87 octane w no detonation or heat problems. Seriously .. if I could chase you with a broom away from compression I would be doing so right now. Use Dynamic compression as a tuning tool to work with your camshaft and nothing else.. Concentrate on Headflow .. do the Windage tray and electric fan and tune your carb/ignition to perfection. Shoot for a 325hp to 400hp 302 on 87 octane. Reher/Morrison engine and head building books are your friend. So are Head Porting/Building books from Dave Vizzard.

During a complete teardown,never take the oil pan off with the oil pan up.The oil pan has sludge,sometimes metal pieces in it.These will drop right into the engine and you don't want this.Take the oil pan off with the oil down to prevent this.

A decent mild street engine is usually 9:1-10.5:1. Personally I like the idea of building more for torque. A big cam sounds nice but it's kinda pointless if it doesn't make power in a usable rpm range you will like an engine with 300hp and 350ft lbs at 2500 rpm more than one that makes 350hp and tq at 4k. The numbers are exaggerated but still you want max torque at about your cruise rpm a torque minded build always feels stronger on the street than a hour build
@Marcus_Leandro6 жыл бұрын
With the 289 heads, are the exhaust and intake ports the same as 302? If they are smaller, yeah you get better compression but if the engine cant breathe that kills power

If you need any advice just message me back and ill be glad to help. just one big thing is when you build that motor use cheveron delo oil or rottela oil excuse spelling, measure everything and when you put the pistons in the block make sure the two top rings are 180 from each other and above the wristpin and use marvel's mystery oil to lube the cylinders and rings or wd40 if you cant find that don't use motor oil it wont let the rings seat as quick as they need to, and put it under a load asap after cam break in.

289 is OK. I have no problem with them. But for me, I've already been the 289 route. When I decided to get the 289 out of my 65 Galaxie and replace it with a 390, I figured out what I had been missing. If this is what you want to do, that's OK. I'm not knocking it. But, if you want real power, step up to a 351 Clevland or a 390. You will forget about the 289 or the 302. Both are good engines. But they can't hold a candle to the 351C or 390. If you have the greenbacks, Stick the 351C heads on a 289. I've seen it done. But you have to do a lot to the block to keep it from exploding. 550 HP @ 9 grand. It's a little screamer. It's been years since I've seen it done.

So with the 289 heads on your 302... ive been thinking about a head swap on my 88 5.0 f150 for a while now but from what ive heard, 351 heads will give you bigger runner volumes than that of the 289 and the 302 with the loss of compression... hence new dome top pistons to re-up the compression (read this was actually a good combo other than having to re-machine head studs to fit the head). With your theory of the 289 head on the 302 (basically a stroked out 289) will up the compression ratio to give you more bang for your buck with the 302's 4in bore and longer stroke..... But with the 289 head (unless you go in and port and polish) wouldn't you actually stay around the same power you started with? considering that you will be getting that compression boost at a loss of runner volume? ~Jaden

I've put new shocks in on my F250, and i still got axle hop. Although i have 30" tall tires it so the motor liked to torque up more when it ran. But if the new shocks don't fix your wheel hop problem you may need some ladder bars or traction bars to keep the leaf springs from twisting up like pretzels. The F100 is gonna be a lot meaner and faster when you get that 5 spd in there. The gearing in the 3 spd is junk in a truck.

Even though 9 in. Ford diff. has proved to be the toughest diff. , the 8.8 diff. is also just as tough. For what it's being used here , it is perfect. The 9 in. is another example of Ford's superiority in engineering. The Ford haters love to use the 9 in. in their extreme hi hp buildups, yet they still claim GM an Mopar are superior. They also know Ford makes the best engines, but like kids they will not admit it.

You really need to educate yourself correctly regarding Cam, Valve lift , Duration , overlap , centerline , Static Compression , piston domes , Reversion etc. That 280 cam is far too much duration for a small displacement , short stroke 289 for any street driven vehicle. That much overlap is going to kill its drivability unless your turning 5000 rpm everywhere and have some seriously exspensive head work done and all new roller valvetrain , Springs , valves, custom pistons , high plenum volume intake manifold with short length runner , exspensive center dump 4 barrel carb .....just be prepared to spend $1000's to make that cam work at all in a street driven 289. And it never is going to be anything but horrible under 5000 rpm and have a peak torque rpm around 7000 and peak HP at around 8000 . And your head info regarding positive stop rocker studs , 289 heads and 302 , 351 heads. Unless you have 289 K code Hi Po heads you have press in studs with with horrible
