U have what looks to be a real good truck there. They are a great foundation to work with! Yes they have some issues & yes they use alot of gas to go alil bit of distance. But I use these trucks as my daily & issues can be fixed by me, & when they use alot of gas u simply plan your travels out to get what u need with one trip instead of just going somwere everytime u need somthin. U just plan to get it all in one & u get by. But they are vehicals that if you do your own mechanican, u can keep it running forever! They are not disposable! U said it, they have character, they have soul! New vehicals have no personality!

Your tank needs to vent (I heard pressure release when you pulled the cap) The original system vented the canister with venturi vacuum and a thermal switch. The vacuum on the tank can be enough to cause fuel starvation as the truck runs for a bit. I simply installed vented caps on my old truck, but you can repair the oem system without too much effort.

I have a vented cap on there, so I’m not sure why it’s pressurizing like that.

1978 was the year they changed to a roll over vent on top of the tank about 1/2 way through the production run. So it's hard to say what your particular truck needs from a video I recommend Bronco Graveyard for a parts and information source

Very Nice! That looks like a well optioned truck. I noticed twice when you removed the gas cap it sounded like it has pulled a vacuum on your tank or either built pressure. That could cause a fuel delivery issue. If you have more issues you may need a different cap.

I've replaced the cap. I think I may need to figure something out for a fuel tank vent.

I have a hard time finding the right caps for these, I have a 76 that had evap but I put a non evap tank in it and the cap that was on it in my non evap truck works and vents, but I've bought multiple "vented" caps that don't vent. The gates one doesn't seem to.@@lock_to_lock

Darn nice Ford, when you get to the A/C I'd suggest buying a set of manifold gauges and a vacuum pump, even if used once they are cheaper ( if you buy cheap ones) than paying someone else. There's about a million KZbin videos on how to do it. But you might already have them lol. Again that's a sweet Ford. If you get to needing something to do I'd trade you my 90 Ford project for it! It's a needing plenty

I put progressive linkage on my sniper and it helped a lot with the touchy throttle.

I was going to suggest the same. Unlike a 4bbl carb, all four throttle blades open up at once on the Sniper, so you get a LOT of air/fuel with just a little bit of throttle. I put the 2bbl Sniper in my Bronco for just that reason. It's good up to 350hp as it is, and the smaller size makes the drivability so much nicer. A progressive throttle would do much the same.

Never sell it, you can't replace it. I understand the pleasure it gives you, i have a 1980 F150 custom shortbed with the 300 inline 6. These trucks in good original condition are as rare as hen teeth.

Fat Gender Garage makes a hideaway bracket for the Sniper Display. I would also look at some of the vintage air/resto air models if your legacy AC system is done.

are you going to add an open element air cleaner assembly? Or are you going to keep the original thermostatically controlled air cleaner?
@lock_to_lock

I'd like to add an open element air cleaner, but for now the OEM one works.

Hey I would check your differential fluid in that truck, just remove the fill plug and stick something in to measure how much is in there or just replace the fluid. I have owned 3 of these trucks and all of them would drive but literally had like a 1/4 of a quart of fluid in them. If it’s never been changed and the truck sat for a while it’s very likely it could’ve slowly leaked out.

My 78 F250 300 4 speed 4x4 I’m working on right now sat for over 20 years before I got it, and every bearing in the front and rear diff, transfer case, and transmission were all perfect. Not a single one of them had more than like a 1/8-1/4 of a quart of gear oil which leads me to believe they slowly leak out when sitting and that no one drove it to destroy them.

I’ll definitely take a look at this, I imagine mine is low after sitting for so long.

Just as an FYI, (Im Australian) i did the conversion of Gallons to Litres, and $USD>$AUD. It cost you $52.58 to fill her up... for the same amount here in Australia it would have cost you $74.52. So Petrol (Gas) costs roughly 41% more down under :'( Love the Truck btw, i just picked up a 77' F100 as well (Right Hand Drive)
