I was already planning to start The Dandelion Dynasty this fall, but even if I hadn’t been, you two would have convinced me to! Also, I fully agree with your praise of Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, which I plan to reread next year. Thank you for this video! I'll definitely check these books out. My two underrated series are The queen's thief, by Megan Whallen Turner, and the Rai Kira trilogy by Carol Berg. The first is a fun political fantasy with great characters and awesome banter, the second has an interesting world building and culture, and great dynamics of the main protagonists that reminds me of the dynamics between Merlin and prince Arthur in bbc's Merlin.

Hello Petrik. I have all of the traditionally published books on this list in my library and plan to read them sooner or later. However, in case of Echoes Saga, Illborn and Dreams of the Dying, I can't read them soon simply because they're not available. That's the problem with all self-published books in India. They're simply either not avaliable without import fees, or highly overpriced (each self-pub book being the price of 3-4 traditionally published books). So even though I do want very much to read all of the self-pub books you regularly mention, it's difficult to get a physical copy of the prohibitively priced books themselves, and thus they keep getting pushed back in the TBR since I keep buying more traditionally published books and feel like I should read them first since I already paid money for them. I'm glad the authors are able to get better profits going the self-pub route, but this grossly limits their exposure in a majority of countries of the world. Not everyone can spare the money to import a grossly overpriced copy of a self-published book at the price they can buy 3-4 traditionally published books in.
@ADavidSingh
@ADavidSingh 4 ай бұрын
@DashWatson - thanks for bringing up the issue about overpriced self-pub PRINT books in India. This long-standing problem exists because retailers like Amazon do not allow self-pub authors to set the price of print books on Amazon India (although allowed in UK, US, EU, CA, AU, JP). Hence, the price of print books (on Amazon India) gets set to the INR equivalent of the USD price - making them prohibitively expensive. In contrast, Amazon does allow trad publishing companies to set the price of print books, in India, that is acceptable to Indian readers. Secondly, unlike trad publishing companies, self-pub authors have limited distribution channels (where books are sold) outside Amazon India. Flipkart may be an option for you, but there are too many "links in the chain" to get print books onto Flipkart - which results in them being overpriced. Good news - There is a new print-on-demand company that operates mainly in the UK and US. They are planning to extend their printing operations to India soon. Once that happens self-pub authors will have the ability to price print books appropriately for Indian readers, in the near future. On a different note: consider reading self-pub EBOOKS from authors whom you like. Self-pub authors do have the ability to set the price on Amazon India (usually 50-75% of the USD price) - so you'll find that acceptable. Cheers!😃
@PetrikLeo

It's not only in India. I'm in Indonesia, and self-published books are super expensive to buy. IF they're available. But you can still access them using ebooks. That's what I do.

Definitely give the second book a try first. I think it's a big step up. If you still don't like it, feel free to drop the series. It's basically a series of 3 trilogies. :)

Tide Child is such a great trilogy. To anyone considering it, Im not sure id consider it as difficult to read as most epic fantasy. I'd pose this as a series to get people into nautical fantasy. And if the idea of nautical fantasy puts you off.. Consider what you'd think about a nautical fantasy set in a matriarchical society. Definitely turns things on their head.
@PetrikLeo

For me, it's probably because I'm not a fan nautical fantasy in general. That's most likely why it was more difficult for me 😆

I’m sorry but I very strongly disagree here, @petrikleo. None of these series are under hyped. Everyone on the book tube, booktok, Reddit or fantasy community knows about them. Well, if a series sells 2 million books then it’s not really underhyped, is it? I’d say Fire Sacrament by Robert VS reddick, Runelords, Vlad taltos, Shadows of the apt, the divine cities, dagger and the coin - these are the real underrated but technically amazing fantasy series.
@PetrikLeo
@PetrikLeo 4 ай бұрын
All of them are popular? 😅 I mean, fair on Memory Sorrow and Thorn and Echoes Saga, but The Ember Blade? Who on booktube talks about the book other than a few people. Fewer people talks about it on booktok and Reddit. You mentioned The Dagger and the Coin, but most of the series are about the same in poularity as Dagger and the Coin. I, Matt, and Jimmy talks about the series a lot. By your definition, it's no longer underhyped then? 🙂 The Councillor is even on the verge of cancellation because too few people reads it. Guess we do have to disagree. 🙂 But I do agree Dagger and the Coin and Fire Sacraments are underhyped series. Divine Cities is an amazing series, and I think it's underhyped too, but it's more popular and the sales are still better than Ember Blade, Councillor, and The Last War trilogy. To mention a few. 🙂
