Yeah I totally agree about the book and movie comparison. I love them both but I understand King being upset and them not being the same. They’re not. But they’re both fantastic.

There was no shot that Stephen King would like the movie. He and Kubrick have entirely different philosophies and worldviews. King is deeply empathetic and humanistic. No matter what happens his world is not without hope and whatever salvation is possible comes from the goodness of people. Kubrick on the other hand is misanthropic and damn near sociopathic in that his world seems hopeless even before anything bad happens because he has no faith in people. Any salvation that takes place is because an indifferent universe blinked. I still like both but it's as if they aren't even related to each other.

Wendy is so much better in the book! I was also super surprised that most of the iconic scenes from the movie never existed in the book.

Also gave this book 4 stars I really enjoyed both the book and the movie but wow totally different experience. I wish he would have chopped like 100 pages off this book though in typical Stephen King fashion lol

100 pages less would’ve been PERFECT 😭

Both the movie and book are 5 stars for me. As an adaptation the movie is absolutely trash, but it's so good on its own for what it is that it's still a masterpiece. The book is personally the scariest book I've ever read. The dog costume scene in particular has never been topped. I don't hold anything against Kubrick for making changes. A lot of King is unfilmable, in that it just wouldn't work in a different medium than writing.

Great vlog! I got a copy of the shining from the thrift store. Brought it home to find the last 50 pages were torn out. Damn. I too have issues with Stephen King. Sometimes he’s just too bloated and creepy for me in terms of his world view. Like the way he describes women is gross sometimes. As is the child orgy scene in It. But he’s really good at humanizing characters and influenced so much of pop culture so I give him props for that. But yeah, mixed feelings.

I never know what to expect whenever I pick up one of his books 😅
