I Finally Watched Pokémon Horizons… and it’s…

Within the start, I already loved Liko; I found her so relatable. Beyond that, I really like this series. It's an original story in the Pokémon world with an original cast, original villains, and a journey visiting different regions without the primary goal of the heroes just being "become the very best." Don't get me wrong, I liked the previous generations of the anime, but it's refreshing to have something so original instead of a series that just uses the games as a framework. Also Terapagos is just adorable.

The writing and characterization is LEAGUES better than most of Ash’s arcs. The characters actually learn from their experiences and mistakes, whereas Ash fumbles in the same way over and over and it gets stale sometimes. Same with the villains. Team Rocket was always doing the same thing in a slightly different way sometimes (they were great comedic relief though), but The Explorers actually get screen time, motivations, and intrigue from the start

One thing I've really enjoyed about the Brave Asagi (The ship Liko and co. travel on) is that it allows what would've been one episode Filler episode Mons to stay relevant past their episodes debut. The example I can think of is the Maushold the crew encounters that later joins the crew on the ship at the end of the episode. In the Ashime something like that could've only happened if one of the companions caught the pokemon.

@@Scoo212 I honestly feel like Horizons learned alot from the failures from Journeys. For example, in order to keep a Pokémon relevant after their episode, Goh would simply catch the Pokémon so it could appear in later episodes. The issue is that Goh had so many Pokémon, with a lot of them not really having a personality of their own, and most of them blending into the background. Horizons has done a way better job keeping the Brave Asagi's Pokémon relevant, compared to Goh's Pokémon in Journeys.

The only examples I can really think of like that in the Ashime were Jigglypuff, Snubbull and technically Morpeko. It was eventually catched by James, but it was a wild one for like 30 episodes or so

That episode might not be the best example because it’s also the same episode Hatenna learns Heal Pulse (albeit it has been used rarely since). I think a better example is i believe there’s an episode where a Sinistea infiltrates the ship and ends up joining by the end

Horizons has been my favorite thing the Pokémon series has done (next to the manga). It really has been a breath of fresh air for the series, when it first started, my view of it was "an anime with pokemon instead of 'the Pokémon anime'" and i think that still holds true.

That is what I concluded too. It feels like a series that can stand on its own instead of just being tied to being marketing for Pokémon games and merchandise. Since the story isn't directly tied to what is happening with the games, it allows the story to break the usual formula and actually tell a story. It is refreshing!

@@natalimoina and why would you want the anime to have basically the same storyline as the games?? You already know what happens. It’s refreshing that it’s actually different while still bringing in stuff from the newest games. The writing and characterization is leagues better than most of Ash’s arcs (other than the movies and some select moments/arcs, especially in the first season). There’s actual character motivations, mystery, and intrigue. It’s very character-driven, whereas Ash’s time in the anime was usually plot-driven, in which Ash starts with just Pikachu every time, catches Pokémon from the new region, and gets all the gym badges *again*. It was always fun, but it ended up becoming very predictable and stale at times. Even with Team Rocket; they were good comedic relief, but they never really switched up their strategies very much and it was the same thing over and over again trying to catch Pikachu. The Explorers are immediately very different, and each of them has moments to shine and actually has meaningful screen time, with their own mystery and intrigue apart from the main cast

Thanks for talking about this! In my opinion, "Horizons" is Pokemon anime at its best so far! Maybe a bold statement, sure, but the most problems I had with the previous main anime were absolutely fixed there. Sure, there were a few "meh" episodes, but so far it didn't get boring or dull at all. I just hope that more people will stop wearing their nostalgia glasses and just watch the anime without a bias.

Horizons has become my comfort show. I stopped watching the anime in mid Best Wishes, because it was just not for me anymore, and I was ok not watching Pokémon ever again. but then I heard about this show last year and not having Ash again as mc made me give it a try with an open mind and I absolutely loved it, haven't missed an episode since and my love for this series only grow at each episode

Besides the obligatory 'Ash must Return!' stans who think that anyone who likes the anime is immediately a simp for one of the main characters, Horizons is pretty great! I have been watching the Japenese Dub as those episodes release weekly, and so far, Horizons has been nailing the hype very well for fans. Some episodes are gonna be mediocre at times, but when the episode is story-driven, it is REALLY story-driven! All I can really say is watch it, you won't be dissapointed.

I really love the show. There are not many character-of-the-day fillers, most episodes are driven by either the story or by the main characters doing their own antics, which feels fun. There's some aspects that are not handled super well (after so many times, the turtle wandering around gets annoying, and the secondary Pokemons of the cast are all underutilized) - but it's really a breath of fresh air and worth watching. They're also giving particular care on backstory episodes like Friede's (truly something you must watch), you can see they're pushing the animation budget on some of these.

I've watched up to ep. 22 of the series and I found it very enjoyable. Some real life stuff got in the way so I haven't been able to watch in a while but from what I've seen it's some good Pokemon TV. I warmly welcome Liko as thenew main character and after the first couple episodes don't really miss Ash all too much and this is coming from a massive Ash fan. All the characters are fun, I greatly appreciate the antagonistic organization actually being a viable threat, the fights are well choreographed and overall I left every episode wanting more. Now as I've said, I'm up to ep. 22 so for all I know the later episodes could take everything I just said and throw it in the trash but I'm hopeful that that's not the case. Seeing as I'm not as busy right now, I might hop back on the Horizons train soon.

It’s interesting, I personally watch eng dub Pokémon but horizons was the first I watched in Japanese with sub and somehow it feels so alive and energetic The intros and outros are just sheer gold, and the voicing is great (though the only two exceptions imo are hatenna and Murdoch they are better in the dub)

I have been watching Pokemon Horizons since it debut in japanese in English subs. And I LOVE this series! It's so good! It's amazing! I haven't been this invested in a pokemon anime since XY(Z). I did watch a bit of SM and journeys but Horizons is the first time since i have been into the full series. Liko is so cute and relatable. She's such a great MC. Honestly, this is some of the best written anime from pokemon in a while. The Characters are great, and we get an actual plot. I can't recommend this series enough. If you haven't seen it, go watch it! It's great. Also, i call dibs on adopting Liko. So adorable

Episode 21 of Horizons is one of the cutest episodes of a series spanning 27 years. Liko meets a special Pokemon that she "gets", and not only that, it "gets" Liko. Both are sensitive souls, but they each find the bravery of warrior-poets, as time goes on. The little Pokemon shows some SERIOUS guts when she finds herself in situations that terrify her, especially since she's basically a lightning-rod for the emotions of all living things, good or bad.

I’ve been watching Horizons with my sister and I gotta say I like this a little bit more than the anime with Ash. It feels different compared to the original anime but still having elements from it. Ash was fun but I do think it was time for a new protagonist. One thing I also like is how captain Pikachu is very different than Ash’s Pikachu in its personality. Plus the battle animations are great.

what got me about this series was the amount of hate it received before it even came out, and it bothers me that a lot of people think just because a character is female that she can't be as good a trainer as a male. A lot of people were swearing up and down they would never watch the series if the protagonist was a female, but regardless of gender it's the pokemon that fights, not the trainer, they are just the strategist. As a woman myself I couldn't really get over the fact the show had got so much hate over a female character before people even got to know her and honestly it's a relief to see people actually liking her now. XD

Horizons is the second Pokémon season I’ve started following in sub (the first being Journeys), and after growing up with dub my whole life, I’ve gotta say, sub is just as good; if not better. Horizons sub has peak openings and the voice acting is fantastic, and everything just hits hard!!! Pokemon Horizons fixed a issue I've had with recent Pokemon Media, that being that recent stuff (even the games) have felt less like "The World Of Pokemon" and more like "A World that just so happens to have Pokemon in it". Horizons does a really good job with world building and showing how Pokemon change/interact with the world, and how the world differs from other worlds, which is more than I can say for a lot of recent media.(I'm looking at YOU SwSh and SV.)

Been watching Pocket Monsters 2023 (Horizons) since it came out in Japan and are now at 62 episodes. It's an amazing show, there's a proper story line and the characters are all fun. It's awesome that they don't follow the game's plot, but still incorporate all the characters and settings of SV, something that they failed to do in PM19 (Journeys). Although people can watch what they want, I do think the English version is the lesser version with replacing a lot of the epic songs you hear in the background with more whimsical music at times. I think there's only a couple episodes that didn't replace any music. But other than that, it's a great show. At the moment it's barely behind Sun&Moon for me as favourite series.

i just really enjoy how pokemon horizons has given us a lot more sensical worldbuilding than all the pokemon seasons that preceded it. also love the story!! the only sin of this series to me is how little action their second pokemon get ;w; also being caught up with the japanese release, i really think pokemon horizons might be the best pokemon anime so far. even tho its a kids anime there were some twists that caught me off guard and ive been crying my eyes out (im an emotional person) in neary every episode bc i like them a lot!! I have been enjoying Pokemon horizons with official Japanese Pokemon KZbin channel. A VPN to Japan server is required to access those episode. Pokemon Japan uploads them every Friday after it was aired on TC for a week. Some special episodes are permanently there. For anyone planning to watch it I do have to recommend the Sub over the English Dub. Not only because more episodes are out right now but also because of the OST. The clip played in this vid with Friede, Cap and Charizard is cool but, in my opinion, is so much better in the sub because the music in the dub is lowkey dry and bland. Meanwhile the music in the sub was so much more dramatic I was genuinely taken aback when I watched it. I highly recommend the sub if you’re able to watch it.

The Spinel arc surprised me so much, he was such an awesome villain. He was a smart, ominous threat. *Slight spoiler* I didn't like the amnesia aspect of his plotline as much, it just didn't feel unique or original. And I think Liko accidentally breaks her phone just by dropping it and that's why it takes longer for the other heroes to find her. Just felt a little contrived. But having a villain intentionally screw with their tech and lure Liko to where she'd be alone so he can steal from her, that's intimidating stuff! It felt so refreshing to have a scheming villain in Pokémon.

This show makes me feel like a kid again. It’s the first time since maybe X&Y where I was heavily invested in the Pokemon anime. I love how it’s more plot-focused and seems to have a genuine direction that isn’t limited to go and get badges. One thing I am bit scared of is all the content that seems to be about wanting Ash back. As much as I liked him, his time is gone and this such a good direction for the series instead of rethreading old grounds. I hope this show is successful so the Pokemon Company realizes we want more of this

I can highly recommend Horizons, it's much more structured than the episodic adventures of Ash in the past, which is a big plus. It's got some very nice direction and character building. It's very engaging and also really well animated. Oh but I gotta give a quick shoutout to the Alola season of the anime. Don't sleep of that part of Ash's journey, it was peak gold comedy.

Is he aware that the English Dub on Netflix is the same as the one several episodes ahead in Canada. Exactly the same voice actors. However, I understand why he isn’t watching or reviewing it or the English Sub. Anyways, I have an English Sub episode that should be out soon to watch!

I've been watching Horizons since the beginning and this series is truly something special. Because it's handicapping itself by following the games for the most part, it allows for a much better original storytelling. I know people still miss Ash, but really - the guy deserves a brake after such a long time. Liko is a perfect role model for people who don't know how to approach situations head on and need a time to think. Overall, Pokémon Horizons is a fantastic fresh take on the Pokémon world.❤

I was very hesitant because of how much I disliked Journeys. But Horizons is turning out really great. The story and the characters are great. This show looks as good as the movies. Plus it’s finally nice that we have a beautiful animation design again since the XY series.

I only watch Pokemon Horizons 62 episodes out of 63 episodes, and it's mutch better then orginal pokemon series. You definitely need watch the newest episodes on unofficial streaming websites, since you will wait at least another year to watch another batch of englished dubbed Pokemon Horizons episodes.

Tbh i love this show it really pushing the potential of a pokemon adventure anime to the next level like how they did in xy diamond and pearl and even sun and moon the charcters are really good the pokemon are great and the animation is godlike but i turly wish we will see Ash sooner or later becasue i do really miss him i give the show 9 out of 10 personnaly

I got interested in Pokemon in 2023 after playing Pokemon - Emerald So if I watched the old anime I would be watching this series now. But I want to watch the sun and moon part. Do I need to start the anime series from the beginning or is this not necessary?

I love Horizons! I was on the hype train when the series was first revealed! I was ready for new protagonists since they obviously didn't know how to use Ash right anymore and didn't want him to age.

It would be awesome if captain pikachu would evolve during a trip to alola, not only would he then be able to fly under his own power, but it would lead to comedic moments as alolan raichu is even cuter than pikachu and captain pikachu hates being called cute

My general thoughts are I like it and I really appreciate how it is different from the Ash age, but I also have a hard time saying with upmost sincerity that I believe it's totally outstripped the best of what that era had to offer yet. There are absolutely slow patches and I'm probably alot less interested in the overall mystery as others may be (it feels less like something with pieces that I can theorize about and more like I'm just waiting for the show to tell me the answer) but the cast and characters are all mostly pretty good with only Amethio and his specific goons coming up short for me character wise. Liko is a breath of fresh air, Roy provides a nice contrast and Dot is straight up the best character in the show bar none. I dig the overall vibe of the airship with random pokemon hanging around just cuz and the crew have a nice dynamic with each other. I do think the show coddles our leads too much for my liking even if I can respect the "realism" of them needing adult supervision so I just hope the show begins to losen up on that end in the future.

Personally, I miss Ash. Journeys got me back into the anime, which I hadn't watched in a long time, and led me to watching the older series and movies. I just don't find Horizons to be compulsive viewing: I liked the episodic, laidback approach of Journeys (which gave us some of the best episodes of the anime, in my opinion), and the formulaic approach of the older series, which allowed for the show to explore one-off characters and their stories, expanding the world of Pokémon that way. I like some of the Horizons characters - Dot, Murdock, Friede, Dianna, Mollie. I'm not a fan of Liko - I think she's fine, but I don't think she stands out compared to the likes of Misty, Dawn, Iris, Bonnie, Serena, or Lana. Roy is a poor man's Ash, and really annoying at times (the Fuecoco song gets on my nerves). I understand why Captain Pikachu exists, but we already had one Pikachu in the anime for 26 years, did we really need another (and another powerful one at that)? I think Evolutions handled the inclusion of the franchise mascot better: have Pikachu appear, but don't have Pikachu be one of the main characters again. As for the villains, they're okay: I do miss Team Rocket, though I wish Jessie, James, and Meowth had taken a page out of Butch and Cassidy's book and done something else with their lives instead of chasing after Pikachu for perpetuity. I appreciate that the anime is doing something different, and taking a different approach, and it was about time to wrap up Ash's story anyway, if he was never going to get older; but, as I said, I don't think it's compulsive viewing. It's a good show for newcomers to the franchise; but I think older fans are better off with the mini-series, like Generations and Evolutions or even Twilight Wings.

Honestly this might be the closest series to one that's for older fans, the varied ages of the characters means there's stories that can connect to anyone. For instance, Friede has his journey start because he felt lost and no passion for the job he spent his life on achieving. Or Mollie, an obvious "nurse joy" that decided to walk away from her family's business to do what she wanted to do based on her views.
