20:05 In case you don't know, in real life "water research" is important because it's how we find out if there's issues with the given body of water. We check for stuff like oxygen levels, pH levels, contaminants, etc. This has to be done regularly because we need a baseline and to know what it was like before in order to tell if it has changed. I get that this is just a silly joke, I just wanted to explain it in case anyone was curious!

I Choose You was one of the weirdest theater experiences I've ever had. I invited my (then) boyfriend and he showed up like 20 minutes late (once he found out he was gonna be late I told him not to come but he did anyway). He didn't know anything about Pokémon so he kept asking me questions and when Pikachu spoke...I had no answers for him 😭 there were so many audible "WHAT's" and gasps in the theater. Looking back it was honestly pretty hilarious

The Power of Us was such an unexpectedly GREAT movie. I can't remember a Pokemon movie where these one shot characters were so memorable and enjoyable. The climax of all their arcs closing and ALL of them contributing to saving the city, rather than just Ash doing it alone like usual was so satisfying. I never thought a Modern era movie would contest with my love of the Hoenn films.

I'm so glad Power of Us is getting some flowers!! its genuinely one of my top 3 Pokemon movies of all time, but I feel like so many people dismiss it because its not a "classic" like the first movie or the Entei movie. Power of Us has so much heart, its super well written and incredibly easy to get invested in the characters, I think mostly in part because they feel so real. Pokemon is full of larger than life heroes and villains who are, y'know, pretty cartoonish exaggerations, either way too cool or way too evil, but Power of Us is just like, normal people who feel like they would exist in the real world. they all have great stories and valid traumas that all come together and create an incredibly satisfying arc for all of them. I hope more people can watch it and see how great it is for themselves!
@MarkerDotNet2 ай бұрын
great description!! i feel the same way. its definitely super close to being my favorite just cuz of the characters alone. theyre all so grounded, like you said, they could just be normal people youd run into on the street. i love them all so much!

For the most part I thought Pokemon movies had gotten pretty formulaic but those movies really impressed me. They were different and had some interesting stories to tell. So much so I'm actually kind of baffled that those were the last animated Pokemon movies we've gotten. Like it's been 4 years already????? Anyways, thank you for your time making these videos. They were a nice trip down memory lane.

It just dawned on me that we haven't had any new Pokémon movies since Secrets of the Jungle, unless you don't count Pokémon: the Arceus Chronicles as a movie. With that in mind, it feels a bit strange how there weren't really any movies with the main cast of the Sun & Moon series or Journeys, especially since both of those would be the most suited seasons to have movies since those are probably the most episodic seasons of the entire anime.

The Detective Pikachu movie had archival sound recording for Jigglypuff: *Made by the original English VA of Misty and Jessie Rachel Lillis, who sadly passed away a few weeks ago.* I contributed to her GoFundMe page when it was announced that she was in late stage breast cancer. When the day the email announcing her death came, I honestly wasn't that shocked by the news. The exact same things happened 2 years ago, when fellow VA Billy Kametz passed away from Colon Cancer. I knew this was a fruitless contribution from the start, yet I did it because I wanted to make sure a great actor got the comfort and respect she deserved, whose performances were a huge part of my childhood and contributed to the success of a franchise beloved by billions across the world. *RIP to a real Legendary Pokemon: Rachel Lillis*

The Power of Us is one of the few Pokemon movies that is legit a good movie fullstop, not just a good Pokemon movie. Ash is one of the main characters in it, but he's given equal importance with the other main characters and you don't have to know who he is or have any real experience with the franchise going in to be able to fully experience the film, and there's something to be said for that.

7:20 According to Encyclopaedia Britannica the odds that a person gets struck by lightning in their lifetime (in the US) are about 1 in 15 300. So getting struck 20 times would be around 1 in 5*10^83 (that's a 5 and 83 zeroes). We don't have a canon population of the Pokemon world but assuming it's the same size as Earth we got around 8 billion people (8 and 9 zeroes). So pulling Ash out of the entire population of the planet to help you is 72 orders of magnitude more likely than getting struck by lightning 20 times.

Power of Us is such a good movie, it's crazy to me that it's a Pokémon movie 😭 not that Pokémon movies are awful! But I feel like you could show Power of Us to a kid who doesn't know anything about Pokémon and they'd still be enthralled. I also think it has smart and interesting enough character writing to be entertaining for adults too. It's like a ~real~ movie, if that makes sense. Once again, not that Pokémon movies are all hot garbage but I feel like it's on the level of a lot of other genuinely well crafted children's movies that folks rave about Edit: I also love how it (and Secrets of the Jungle) build on the themes of the 2nd and 3rd movie. Power of One was never really the "chosen one" narrative that we ended up getting in the dub version, but Power of Us doubles down on the themes of teamwork and community that make the Pokémon universe really special. And of course Secrets of the Jungle built nicely on the familial themes of Spell of the Unown

Power of Us... hands down my favourite Pokemon film - gave me something I never knew I needed, nor did I ever expect Pokemon to do. I also liked Evolution for doing some new things with the animation (not to mention hearing actors take on and reprise roles from the original/Mewtwo Returns). Secrets of the Jungle was almost a winner for me, but it was a bummer how we went from a huge ensemble in Power of Us to Ash and Koko, who can't even speak the same language. Still a lot of good qualities, but Power of Us just had everything for me. Shame it seems like Pokemon movies are doneso, and just when they were at the top of their game. Ah well, least we went out on a high note.

I Choose You, Power of Us, and Secrets of the Jungle were such unexpected hits for me! Especially after the many years of bleh to meh Pokemon movies starting with Ranger and ending in Volcanion. Not to say those movies were all bad, just overall seemed lacking in good writing and vision, with most feeling very rushed to make the release date. The last three original Pokemon movies (excluding Mewtwo Evolution since it's a remake) however make up for the previous movie's shortcomings in strides. The stories and characters are wonderful and well thought out, and the animation is comparable to any good action anime. The artists really didn't let the fact that they were writing for a silly children's cartoon hold them back, they were gonna write the compelling story they wanted and so be it Pikachu and friends were going to be the faces of their masterpieces. Also I highly recommend checking out the movie posters for these films, they are beautiful artworks in their own right and really emphasis the "cinematic masterpiece" vibes of these movies (especially when compared to the older Pokemon movie posters which feels much more "highly marketable to children" than anything else).

A reason to rank things with scores and such: if you do so and compare your ratings with others', it can give you insight into what other people enjoy; maybe it'll grant you some understanding as to how people function. Also, it's fun. Telling someone what you liked as a kid has two qualities: what I just mentioned and a certain catharsis: I know no matter how old I get for Pokemon, I'll always love one or two things about it, including movies. And telling someone what you think/know is a way of...positive venting, you could call it. Pokemon isn't as popular as it used to be, especially for anyone who isn't a child. Maybe you have some things you wish you could tell someone and get constructive criticism back about. Well, ranking is a way to do that. It's a relief to finally get something out of your head, while also learning about your conversation partner. That's why, no matter how many tier lists I make online, it will always be better to meet in person and talk about how if I could ever go back to Pokemon, I would watch I Choose You first thing, as it's pretty much the last Pokemon-related thing I cared about, or so I thought. Watching these ranking videos of yours, they reminded me that I actually care about Pokemon more than I think, even though I was never that much into the anime. So thank you. Umbreon is the best pokemon. Sincerely, a nerd.

I still find it so odd that these movies follow a separate continuity, like with the exception of I choose you they all could have been pretty easily integrated into the anime. Maybe having Goh in them would bloat the plot (even though that neurodivergent hoodie boy carried most of Journeys), or maybe it was related to them retiring Ash in the main anime, the 'demic put the movies on hiatus so who knows.

Destiny Deoxys will always be my favourite movie without a doubt. My nostalgia definitely is a factor, but my main reason why is really stupid. For context, my brother is *very* autistic and Plusle was his absolutely favourite pokemon at the time, and Minun was his most hated pokemon. He tried to throw out our vhs of the movie simply for the fact that Minun existed in it. Didn't care that his favourite was in it, just cared that his least favourite tainted it. (Also he destroyed our copy of Pokemon Ranger by biting it, not relevant to this story, just thought it was funny.) But yeah, love Destiny Deoxys to death.
