Watching this video made me feel like it was specifically made for me. I’m currently a junior in Nigeria and I also have a glorified perception of the US. In fact I planned to apply to only American colleges because I believe that the US has everything I need to become successful. But the truth is that is absolutely not true and your video just made it clear to me. I have told myself that I can become whoever I want to be regardless of whether or not I school in the US and that there are other amazing countries I can school in. Hopefully the elections go on our side but if it doesn’t then it’s okay. Just like you Katie and millions of other international students WE ALL WILL BE FINE. All will be well eventually. Thank you Katie for sharing this video with the world. God bless you.

I was an international student and I stayed in the United States, that was 10 years ago. You just need to review your posibilites under the immigration law rules. I'm a grad student in the US (STEM) from the Philippines and one thing that resonated to me the most from what you said is the perception that US is perfect. The problems in the STEM community in PH is very similar to the issues faced by STEM community in the States. While some things are easier in the US (like access to facilities and PWD-friendly buildings), there are more deeply-rooted issues that are the same wherever we go. I hope you go back next Spring here, Katie! Would love to meet you in person. 😊

This video was Tailor-made for students like myself. I am a US Citizen but I live in India and consider myself Indian (was born there and came back). We all have a glorified image about the Us and while part of that may be true, there are thousands of great options not just internationally but also locally. I am considering law at Us but as the situation progresses I feel more and more inclined to study locally. Whilst the Us is a great place, there are better places.

This is so important. I'm a filipina in the US, and I have to keep telling my cousins it's not necessarily the best path. It's just unbelievable how all your dreams just go into the drain. Personally, this happened to me when I was doing my 10th and 11th together in the USA, just because I can graduate early and get into a college. However, my father got his transfer back to India just after my completion of 11th grade. I was devastated by this. I mean working so hard and then you get nothing out of it. After that, I had to repeat my 11th grade in India again as they were not taking me in 12th directly. I don't know why I'm writing this but I just want to tell you that I feel you! You moved on that American bubble is appreciable because after 2 years I still can't. It's just the mindset that if I was there my life must've been better. Thank you so much for letting us all know. Please keep us updated and we all love you. P.S. Sorry for writing so long.

I usually never comment on youtube videos, but this one just hits home. I was an international graduate student in the US for two years and went through pretty much everything you talked about: the expectations of America, actually living there and then coming back home. I was planning to stay and work in the country after I graduated but when the pandemic hit, the State Department, which funded my scholarship, decided to send home everyone under my visa status after we were done with school. This last year was nothing short of an emotional rollercoaster but I've managed to rebuild my life back home in Argentina and I'm grateful of being close to my family and dearest friends again. I enjoyed my time in the US but I also got to know it better and realized that, as you mentioned, there are definitely tradeoffs and caveats to the American Dream. I've also learned to appreaciate all the good things in my own country, especially living in a culture where family time and social gatherings are unscheduled and given more priority. Life can sometimes take unexpected turns, you've got to do the best you can with the cards you're dealt with and try to enjoy the present. Thank you for sharing your story. God bless.

Hey Katie, as a fellow international student from China I feel every sentence that you said. While appreciating the privilege of being home and having all my family's support during this extra hard time, I am also strongly resonating with your comment on how being an international student truly shaped my perceptions about America. The first semester of my freshman year has been the most eye-opening and conflicting period of my life. The experience of living all by yourself in a new nation within a community that you never interacted with before has changed so much of who I was and what I believed. Now that I'm home and reimmersed in my own culture, I realized how much my own perspectives have changed and continue to be changed as I do online schooling from my US college. No matter what comes in the future, I am grateful that I have had this experience that has enabled me to learn so much about the world and myself. Thank you so much for always speaking out on behalf of the international student community in US colleges and sharing your journey with us! :)

Honestly the student visa process along with all the scary policies made this year give a whole new meaning to The word "foreigner" Of course, I'm looking forward to my experience there, but quarantine has given me the opportunity to just take the time and look at things as they really are. I thought America was the land of opportunity and all the problems in my country were non existence here but Now i know better. I remember when I came I thought I would be able to adjust to life here. I can't imagine living in America without a family and I'm really grateful to my family. Like you i was so hung up being independent and doing whatever i want whenever i wanted. Going to school is been the hardest thing for me because you would always be discouraged by the system and they would literally waste your time with English classes even if you are fluent in English. Luckily I'm almost Done with University And even though I'm an American citizen now I can't stop things what life would be like in another place. that's why i plan to move to another place as soon as i get my degree.

my mom and grandparents moved to america from the philippines for the american dream and growing up in america with a lot of privilege and with an americanized mom, this mindset perpetuated my belief that america is perfect and full of opportunity since it really did serve that purpose for my family. now i can see how america is not as special as it's made out to be and how even if it has been great to live in for me, many people are treated extremely unfairly. it's so interesting to see your perspective, because it makes me think of my grandparents' thought process in moving. i never questioned why they didn't necessarily have a specific reason for moving before because i thought the american dream was so obvious.

A lot of issues like colorism or sticking to Euro-centric beauty standards are rooted in colonial mentality. I think learning our history would help in decolonizing ourselves. You'll learn the ways on how the Americans painted themselves as our saviors and what made us feel indebted to America even though what America inflicted upon us is not that different from what Spain did.

Katie!!! This video is so interesting in so many ways. When you said “there are opportunities right where you are” it’s crazy because I’m in America and all I want is to go abroad or go anywhere but here. I was talking to a friend in the Dominican Republic and when we talked about future careers, she said she wanted to be an English teacher and I thought she wanted to teach English abroad like most do. But when I asked, she said no, I’m staying to teach English in my country and improve the conditions here! And I thought that was really amazing. I don’t like the US probably for the same reasons your classmates ranted about it but I guess the lesson is there are problems everywhere, no matter where you go, the grass is always greener. For example, I’ve always thought countries in Europe or Nordic countries are better and less ridden with problems but a Filipina friend who’s lived in Latin America, Europe, Australia, the Philippines told me the problems are the same (racism, white supremacy) and we really just have to do the work wherever we are, because we can make things better without having to leave!

Hey Katie! Weirdly enough, I can relate to what you are saying. I was born here, but both of my parents also come from colonized countries, so America is seen as the golden standard of living. My parents are definitely more realistic now since we know that it isn't exactly easy to succeed here without immense sacrifices, but still have hopes (and expectations) for me here. However as I grow up, I realize that I want to move somewhere else. But I am not sure how to go about moving somewhere else. I am a freshman at Cornell right now, but I am on a track that kind of requires me to stay in the U.S.. But watching your video makes me really consider planning hard to make moving somewhere else, even if its just a couple hundred miles north in Canada!

The older you get the more you appreciate your home country when you're living in the US. I moved to the US when i was 11 years old and in my teen and 20s i loved living in the US and experiencing American life. But as i got into my 30s and beyond i started to really miss the Philippines and being among my own people. The US has just become too polarized with every ethnic group just looking out for themselves without a real sense of community, a total contrast to the feeling of belonging and openness with your community in the Philippines. Whenever i vacation back to the PH i always wonder why i dont just stay permanently, everything i love is back there. I still live in the US but i've been thinking more and more of moving back to my home country and be among my relatives and family.

The grass is always greener somewhere else! This is even true within America. I grew up in Kansas, and I always dreamed of moving to a big city on one of the coasts, and going to a prestigious university. Then when I actually did that, I got disillusioned and realized that although there were some good things about that, there was also a lot of bad that no one had warned me about. Americans of my political persuasion see a lot to admire in Canada and Europe. I have a friend who is eligible for Italian citizenship and plans to move to Italy. Personally, though, I plan to stay in the US, not because it's perfect, but because it's my home. And there are always trade-offs anywhere you go. P. S. Sorry about the colonialism and xenophobia!

As an American in a liberal bubble in California, I feel like I definitely never stop complaining about my country; in fact, in IB History of the Americas, we learnt about how the US colonized the Philippines and responded brutally to the Philippine independence movement - a stark contrast to your experience. It was really interesting to hear your perspective and your commentary on the positive aspects of the US. TBH, to a lesser extent that's how I feel about other countries, like Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the Nordic countries: they all have their issues but they seem much better than the US, and I'd like to attend university in another country, if only so I can learn in person instead of doing distance learning; similarly to your experience with the US, I've even sometimes wanted to have a British or Australian accent instead of an American one. Not to get political, but* the US immigration system desperately needs to be improved; the way it favors US citizens and rejects both people fleeing desperate poverty and violence and those simply looking for more opportunities is inhumane and immoral. I'm honestly not super confident in our Covid response (although the election result might improve that), but I hope that you get to return to the US if you want to!

Getting political, in my opinion, never something for others to cry about. Why? Because every single person’s life is affected by politics and it’s their duty to understand it. It’s sad many think “politics” means “election day” only. Also, people who try to run from politics need to hear about it the most until they are forced to move out of the country or until they become informed

Thank you for this wonderful video Katie! It struck me that you found the "pearl of great price," your Faith, through all the struggles you've had. This life is short. Eternity is, well, obviously not 🙂 I grew up in America and, like you, went to Cornell as a Freshman, although a number of decades ago. Ultimately I also found the Catholic Faith, which has remained the most important thing in my life. It may be of interest to you, perhaps, that as an American I value greatly Asian cultures, especially the Philippines and Korea. I've had many friends from the Philippines, to a significant degree because we met in Church. But I am learning, as well, to appreciate the best of America. If I could encourage you with one suggestion, perhaps something you are already doing, it would be this simple thing, take up (or continue) the daily rosary. Our Lady is now, and always will be, our Mother. And she loves us more than we can understand in this present life. God bless you!

as a canadian living in central america for 12 years, i can absolutely agree. The perception here is the same. "Everything is wonderful in america and everyone there is rich and money grows on trees there". They need to see all the homeless people camping outside! I'm just happy to be in a warm country and not having to chop fire wood every year to stay warm and shovel snow in the winter. But you trade one set of problems for another when moving to a new country. The crime rate is very high here and i had to take down my facebook account because nasty people use it to spy on your life. Sadly many young women here become whores or part time whores. At some restaurants the waitresses dont actually get paid - its just a cover to pick up men. A girl i fell in love with here dumped me for an old man with money. He is 40 years older then her!!! She was just playing me the whole time! I have no respect for the women here any more. So anyways thats life. You might have a really great opportunity there in the beautiful tropics!!! You are really good with video editing and technology so there are surely opportunities for you to work internationally while based in your home country!!! Oh the rainy season just started here as well - Big thunder storm came through today !!! All the best!!!

This hits so hard. I spent all of my childhood in the United States and moved to India when I entered 7th grade. Almost 6 years later I still think of how much easier and less complex my life would have been if I'd never moved. I wouldn't have had to think about my identity, thinking out where I'd like to be in the future and so much more that people living there their entire lives haven't had to think about. Before moving to India, my country was a place I visited every 3-4 years and identify myself as an American Indian. But now that I've been here, I still can't completely relate with the Indians here and don't think I'll be able to completely relate with the Americans there if I get into a good American college. Idk my mind is still in that American bubble sometimes and it's what has pushed me to work so hard for college but I really don't know which country I stand with and am trying to figure it out. Thanks for this video Katie! It really helps to have someone be real and honest about something that's not talked much about.

I see more and more young people, especially Americans, turning to this way of thinking. I think it's a good thing, and maybe even what's gonna be necessary to face things like climate change. People thinking in Global terms, thinking of themselves as Global citizens. Anyways great video 🥰

just want to ask you about your beliefs and views on the u.s. growin' up,...are you in the majority amongst your peers is it a prevalent thing, or are you just a few/handful that have those beliefs about america?

I’d like to say this was not uncommon for Filipinos here, but of course I can’t speak for everyone! I’d encourage you to read the comments though - there are lots of real experiences from people around the world who share their view of the US growing up. :)
