I fix the BMW iX

The first EVER all-electric BMW SUV is here and there's a big problem with it. Let's FACE it, it's not the prettiest BMW ever made and in this video, I'm going to fix that.
The BMW iX is powered by two electric motors which bring the power output up to around 500 horsepower or 375 kilowatts. This gives the SUV a 0-60 time in just under 5 seconds. Pretty standard in terms of electric vehicles. Some might even call it slow.
The power comes from a 100-kWh battery pack giving the iX a range of up to 300 miles however these numbers are not final since the production model has yet to be tested properly.
What’s really impressive is the recharging capabilities of the iX. This is more important to me than pushing the range.
You have DC fast charging that should recharge up to 70 percent of the battery capacity in 40 minutes and it also means that a quick 10-minute charge should add about 75 miles of range. Enough to get you to where you need to go in most cases.
When will we see it on the roads? BMW says production should begin in the second half of 2021 and the market launch is scheduled for the end of 2021.
In terms of exterior dimensions, the BMW iX is just as long as the X5, the same height as the X6, and the same wheel dimensions as the X7.
The idea with the design is according to BMW to “express a futuristic form of driving pleasure.”
I thought this grille looked horrible on the M4 and I really struggled to justify it on the M3 in a previous video, but BMW seems to not give a crap about aesthetics anymore which shows in the iX. The grille itself incorporates sensors, a camera and radar technology for the driver assistance systems.
At least that’s how you can try and explain to your friends when they look at you sideways after buying an BMW iX.
On the inside, the BMW iX features a hexagonal steering wheel which supposedly “improves ease of access and gives the driver a better view of the Information display.”
Let’s talk interior for a second - too stripped down, too clinical, absolutely zero emotion, cold and sterile with a massive screen as a dash that looks completely out of place. Unfortunately this is the direction we seem to be headed in - more screens, more sensors and less soul.
Now I want to take a deep dive into the BMW iX design - let’s jump into Photoshop and let me show you exactly why this is the most confusing BMW design I’ve ever seen in my life.

They still make good looking ones. I still think that the current 2 series coupe (2 door), 3 series, 5 series, 8 series, X1, X3, X5 and even X7 look great. The 1 series is like a 6.5/10 which is aight (in person it looks better). They are just messing up now with this one and the 4 series. But look at the iX3. For a mid-size electric crossover it looks pretty good. Definitely better than the bland model Y and the restrained EQC.

In the US per month in 2016-2018 they sold about 3000-5000 F32 4 series, then sales slowed down to about 600 per month in 2019 right before BMW was gonna show off the G22 4-series, when BMW showed the beaver teeth hell theyve created the sales of the F32 went from 500 per month to 3500 again until the F32 ended production. Now the new beaver teeth is selling about 1500-2500 a month. It is absolute bullshit that the G22 is "selling like crazy". Also according to BMWs OWN RESEARCH, only 1/5 likes the new design. Its CLEARLY not received very well, which the sales numbers show.

When I fist saw the iX was going to be featured in this video I had my doubts anything can be done to significantly improve such a horrible looking design. Well, I was proven wrong. When the new grill philosophy started to come out I thought it was the size that makes it problematic. However, I realized some classic BMWs have quite tall grilles and they look fine. I think the problem is related to proportions. The huge grilles look kinda ok on X7 but other models really look like a bunny with double teeth. Make the grilles big as you like but do them with proportion...

I actually think the grille "nostrils" are worse on the new M3/M4. They're really big and flat but they protrude a lot because the rest of the front bumper is not flat. At least with the iX the whole front is flat and the design is more cohesive. That said, I totally agree about the proportions and softness, especially in the rear, because it looks as if the whole body melted a little in the sun.

Hello! It was a very nice statement you had here. I think you capture that dilemma we are facing nowadays whether a car design should be function-driven or design-driven. It seems like as people are more distanced from the driving of the cars with all the driving assist tech and autonomous driving, and a car is more and more becoming a consumer electronic, like you said! Will anyone care about cars having a soul and emotion in 2080 when cars are self driving without steering wheels and possibly flying around? Or will people just look for the cheapest, most functional, way of transportation? As a vehicle engineer but also a design enthusiast in this field, I must agree with the corrections you made. But then again, only if building a car was so easy right.. that longer overhang might create some certification and homologation issues in some countries and removing air damps will worsen drag and EV range etc. When I heard you say, designers make the best designs and engineers come in and take out all the soul.. I was like ouch! I just hope people understand this is the result of a series of compromises, as everything else in this world. Hopefully future cars will look better and hopefully the current design will grow on people. But you are doing a great work here and as a member in this industry, I will keep your opinion in mind as well!

100% TSM. There are so many issues with this design. The "floating roof" C-pillar design (coming from the i3 & i8) doesn't look like it is floating anymore. I can't believe BMW Sr Design VP approved this. I think he must have been on medication. LOL. I'm surprised you managed to clean it up in such a short time. Great job.

Somehow, by giving that car a proper sideline and a cleaner face, the massive grill doesnt look that bad...
