Mrs Crac: Sam, the house is too hot, can you turn down the thermostat? **Sam drills holes in walls** Sam: How's that?
@moonbeam361
@moonbeam361 4 жыл бұрын
That's a well known way to revive a thermostat. Guess you're a millenial and you don't know how things were done in the old days. Of course, this is a temporary fix. He should assess the rest of the car and decide whether to keep or junk it, and if its to be kept then replace the thermostat along with whatever else is needed. And evaluating the car will require driving for a week or two or maybe longer, so the drilled holes keep the engine safe in this time - notice no overheating after holes were drilled - recognise the importance of that observation.

I am now a subscriber and like all you videos even though I am Down Under and cars and opportunities are are more expensive. Until recently we used to build cars down under until our Gov neutered us to be more dependent on foreign supplies by closing it all down. Some of the Aussie made and designed cars sold in the USA were the 2004-06 Pontiac GTO, 2008-09 G8 (and related Chevrolet Caprice PPV), and 2014-17 Chevrolet SS! Aussies like to make big V8 muscle cars that brake and handle very well. Cheers.

Or the thermostat was fine until the head gasket sealer glued it shut. Maybe that back hose let loose before and the air was not purged from the system properly causing overheating. Previous owner threw a new radiator at it thinking that would do it but it did not and eventually blew the head gasket.

Though there is no way for us to know for sure, the fact that there appeared to be sealant on both sides of the thermostat makes me believe that the thermostat was open at some point while the "sealer" was circulating, and that it then was "glued shut" when cooling down. No it doesn't clog up the heater or the radiator. I've used similar products multiple time without any issues. I've also blew a head gasket and got the engine so hot it seized up and after I fixed it I drove it for anouther seven years with no issues. Just luck of the draw.The thermostat being stuck is what blew the head gasket in the first place. But with the amount of valve train noise due to it over heating that engine is not goin to last long anyway.
@vegasfordguy
@vegasfordguy 4 жыл бұрын
@@jasoncampbell5518 These kind of cooling system stop leak products will eventually clog or at the very least will reduce flow to both the heater core and radiator. Ask a legit mechanic to show you the internal mess it can cause. Now for a vehicle that you don't have money to correctly repair or isn't worth the money versus value then these products can be a good option. I would advise to flush out the cooling system after the leak has been sealed.
@Moose1207

@@vegasfordguy I can relate. I had an 1990 town car that constantly ran hot. I didn't know better at the time and just kept running it. Eventually the head gasket blew and we pulled the heads. I found what looked like glitter. Many different sealers that plugged up all of the cooling channels and found a solid ring that sealed the thermostat shut. That's when I learned any fix in the can is a gimmick to get something "working" so you can pawn the problem off on someone else.

@@Moose1207 👍👍I had a Pontiac Bonneville GXP with a Cadillac Northstar. (Famous for overheating) I used a stop- leak product that looked like glitter, worked really good. Then, eventually the thermostat froze up, it would get really hot, then I would stop driving it, cool it off, add water ,repeat. Someone suggested I just remove the thermostat, which I did. The engine thrived on it. Think you only use the stop- leak once or twice, after that it really gums up the works. If you remove the thermostat, the check engine light will come on. So I needed to replace it to get a smog, that's when my problems began again!

There are a lot of unfair comments posted here that reflect the poster’s inattention and bias. Sam wasn’t trying to do a rebuild that some seemed to expect. They totally missed Sam’s intention - which was to figure out what was the problem and make economic decisions to get it going and drive it as a serviceable beast of burden until it dies. For example - drilling through the thermostat wasn’t a fix, it was done as diagnosis. Didn’t you hear what he said? In the end he found a replacement for between 60-70. In the end I think he did a pretty good job of it and we got to see the trials and tribulations of taking on the challenge and even learnt a thing or two along the way. Thanks Sam. I’ve subscribed.

P.S. another reason you're boiling over in your engine is that you're running 100% water. The engine operating temp is well over 100-deg which will cause the water in the engine to boil over. Use a 50/50 solution of water and coolant and that should stop the water from boiling over provided the head gasket has sealed and there is no more air in the cooling system,

if he put it on a hill in neutral and jumped out, the car could loosely be defined as ""RUNNING' then too.,..this car needs AT LEAST the new head gasket and probably a whole lot more. He found over 200K Miles/KM on the odo. I wouldn't touch that car if you paid me, it's for the junkyard now

Irrespective of 'how long' it runs for, the car, according to this video, wouldn't start, was spewing out watery oil, and overheating when he bought it. Now it runs and isn't doing those things. And it cost a couple of hundred dollars. All the comments prior to that were to the effect that it won't be running at all. Which turned out to be incorrect.
