How I Fixed Kanto's Gym Leaders in Gen 2 Pokemon Crystal
---------------------------------------
HOW TO PLAY CRYSTAL LEGACY 1.1:
1) Make sure you are playing on a 64 bit emulator, otherwise you will get a multihit flinch/para glitch!
2) Make sure you apply the updated patch with a CLEAN crystal rom (don't put the patch on legacy)
3) The original Crystal also has versions, and this is tripping people up. Crystal REV 1.0 and 1.1 are two separate versions of the base crystal game. Depending on what version of the game you have, Legacy version 1.1 has versions for you to match Crystal Rev 1.0 and 1.1.
4) You can swap the version 1.1 rom with the 1.0 rom and keep playing the same save file! First, do the patch. Then, simply title the new 1.1 legacy rom the same name as your .sav file and have it replace the 1.0 rom in your Crystal Legacy folder! To reiterate, all you have to do is swap the roms, and your .sav file will keep playing.
5) ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP .sav FILE IN A SEPARATE SPOT! If you corrupt the .sav file, your run is gone.

Hey smith i have been playing crystal legacy and i like to thank you guys... Playing this romhack gave me the same feeling and excitement as when i played pokemon for the first time... the excitement of disccovering all the stuff in the game brings back many good memories ... as someone who has been constantly dissapointed by the pokemon games after gen 3 this really gave me more enjoyement than i imagined... I just recently discovered this channel randomly because of the shorts...generally i will ignore pokemon content since its mostly about new games and pokemon... I really like the romhack and also decided not to watch your videos until i have completed the game first... I have been taking my time playing the game slowly discovering all the changes and i have just gotten myself the second badge... I only watched 3 videos but it was enough to convince me to try the romhack once i completed the game i will come back to watch the rest of the videos... Again ...thank you for this.

@smithplayspokemon maybe not via hm directly like in later gens, but maybe by a tutor? I think that's how they did it in vc yellow, so it would make sense. I certainly hope so though!

@@person_guy3505 From what i remember, in Yellow the NPC only let you play the minigame if you *already* had a Surfing Pikachu, which was only obtainable through Stadium, while in VC the requirement was unnecessary since you have no way to trade Pikachu with Stadium games, but inside the GBC games there's no way for our beloved mouse to learn the move. That said, having the tutor in the same Fuchsia City house could be interesting, and i also agree with the old TMs even in the form of tutors, to make Kanto more rewarding to esplore.

I know that this was intentional to create a competitive team for Green, but I recall Pokemon Special (manga) paying omage to Green's setup, where it explains that he specifically caught and grinded his Rhydon to pay tribute to the gym which had predominantly ground-type moves. Since then, it stuck with me as my head-canon, and I am sad to see Green no longer owning any Ground types in his gym fights in your rom T^T

Blaine being so strong is actually in line with the Manga Canon were he was not only the Partner of Mewtwo but also a deciding factor in the war against the elite Four. He was the one fighting Lance to a standstill until Giovanni could appear and finish him (we dont really count Yellow here because he literally just toyed around with her). Blaine was an incredibly strong Trainer who had a deep bond with Mewtwo since both share the same DNA and a psychic link throught that. So this is an appropirate Power level for him

I always thought it’d be cool to have a set route to follow in gen 2 kanto. Start with surge, then you have to go to pewter via diglett cave, face Brock, work your way down to cinnabar to fight Blaine, go through seafoam islands to fight Janine, follow the east route up to lavender then through rock tunnel to fight Misty, go underground to celadon to fight Erika, then unlock saffron to fight Sabrina, then unlock the blue fight in viridian.

I finished my final battle with Red last night, and now i come here to thank you for this Romhack. I tried to revisit Pokemon Crystal in the Virtual Console, but didn't bother to finish it as soon as i began the unbalanced gym trio (Chuck, Jasmine and Brycen), i realized it hasn't aged well and decided to keep the memories of how i remembered it was when i was just a kid. A couple years later i ended up on one of your videos and got to know about the rom hack and decided to wait and see what you were cooking. As time passed, more eager to play i became until finally got to play it on my 3DS. Loved every bit of it, my inner child cried of the easily available pokemon, being able to rock Scizor, Primeape and Aerodactyl on my team was a joy, and on my next playthrough i'll definitely be carrying Gengar, Golem, Steelix, Ledian and more with me. The story fixes are also great and felt very official (i have a problem with romhacks because of how fanfiction they fell, i know that's the point, but i want to feel i'm playing the canon version), the level scalling were smooth, albeit a little challenging on some parts (fuck you Misty). The only problem i had with Legacy Crystal was that the Kanto badge counter was kinda off (the first 3 gym leaders i beat were Surge, Sabrina and Misty, but the game registered badges for Surge, Misty and Janine) and the "your mom" joke. But those are mere details that don't deter the masterpiece you created!

@@ms-vq1os yeah, I have no issues with the gym leaders' respective 'full power' teams to be elite four level. It's just for the Kanto leaders to be stronger than Lance is kinda funny. Lance should be better than every gym leader, Kanto or Johto. But then that leads to Kanto being way underleveled, so maybe it does make sense for them to be a bit stronger, but eh. The changes overall are very neat though.
@0megaWarrior
@0megaWarrior Жыл бұрын
If you think about it, their levels made sense from an in universe standpoint. They're not supposed to be stronger than Lance, they're gym leaders, not the champion of the region. However, from a gameplay standpoint it doesn't make sense since they all essentially come after the "boss." It really ruins the flow.

It feels a little weird that both Blaine and Blue have Arcanine as their ace. While it makes sense Blue has all three of his team balancers from Red and Blue, and it makes sense Blaine keeps his ace from those games as well, the repetition feels a little... lazy? Blaine's team is fine the way it is (tho I'm a little sad he lost his Magcargo), the only thing that would need to change is the order. Swapping Arcanine and Moltres should be simple enough, since it still lets him use his old ace late into the fight.

Hey Smith. I think there is a massive issue with this hack in Silver’s team. I understand wanting to make him stronger, but removing his Sneasel takes out a super cool piece of environmental story-telling in the Johto games. Silver steals the Sneasel from the NPC that asks you to watch his Shuckle, as he’s fearful Silver will come back to steal that too. I think removing this is against the vision of the hack and borders closer on a difficulty hack, which is not what you intended. Thanks for taking the time to read this! I

What would've made the weather teams better would be use the Renegade Platinum strat and make it permanent inside the gym so you're not stuck with a turn to set it up. But Erika can keep Sunny Day as a move cause yeah it'd be too easy to sweep her. Also that would all Ninetails to have Extresensory which will allow it to deal with threats such as Machamp or Heracross. And Dragon Breath on Kingdra would help Misty cause she could paralyze your team.

Really enjoying this series. Good work with everything. Any thoughts on Surge getting a Jolteon with hidden power ice? Maybe give lantern rain dance and drop electrode for this? Or Brock having Macargo for some fire vs grass types? Steelix makes sense, because he had an onix, but it also looses rock typing, which seemed odd for the rock theming. Steelix is also associated with the steel gym.

Misty's Kingdra is a nice nod to the anime. Giving Brock a Crobat (he had on in the anime) would have been a great counter to a Grass type destroying Omastar/Kabutops. If you wanted to do a nod to the Pokemon Adventures Manga, you could have given Blaine Mewtwo. Blaine contributed some of his DNA to Mewtwo in the manga and the 2 were telepathically linked

My biggest criticism is that, ignoring all your personal changes like base stats and move availability, most of these fights don't feel like Gym fights, even if they are post-game matches. I get the goal here is to make these fights harder, but here they come off as more competitively focused and a number of choices don't really feel that believable for the characters and their place in the game. Here's the changes I'd make for each fight: * _Lt. Surge_ * Electrode♂ Lv. 57 Magneton Lv.57 Ampharos♂ Lv.58 - Thunder - Thunder Wave - Thunder - Reflect - Thunder - Rain Dance - Rain Dance - Explosion - Lock-On - Zap Cannon - Thunder Wave - Iron Tail Electabuzz♂ Lv.58 Raichu♂ Lv.59 - Thunder - Fire Punch - Thunder - Body Slam - Ice Punch - Rock Smash - Rain Dance - Surf My personal suggestion for Lance had his levels between 57 and 61. To make the introduction to Kanto a bit less stressful but still a challenge, I had Surge's levels be about as strong as first few Pokémon, between lvl. 57-59. That, and to make it fair I've made every Gym from this point have five Pokémon, excluding Blue of course. His Electrode is unchanged from the original video, as its a good natural setup for weather and makes sense to see one an in-game team. Since Surge only has five Pokémon, we've cut Lanturn since we're gonna save that for another trainer very soon. Instead, his Magneton is taking over its place, and while it retains Smith's original Thunder and Reflect, it now has the Lock-On and Zap Cannon combo just like the original _GSC_ to utilize behind that screen, and can use Lock-On with Thunder should the rain run out. His Electabuzz just switches out Submission for Smith's updated Rock Smash. His Ampharos and Raichu, like Electrode, are unchanged. While there aren't as many changes to Surge, the ones that are there help to streamline the team more. * _Erika_ * Jumpluff♀ Lv. 59 Parasect♀ Lv.59 Victreebel♀ Lv.60 - Giga Drain - Sleep Powder - Leech Life - Spore - Giga Drain - Sleep Powder - Cotton Spore - Leech Seed - Growth - Giga Drain - Swords Dance - Sludge Bomb Tangela♀ Lv.60 Bellossom♀ Lv.61 - Giga Drain - Sunny Day - SolarBeam - Sunny Day - Stun Spore - SolarBeam - Moonlight - Sleep Powder Since all the Kanto Gyms have only five Pokémon for consistency, we're gonna get rid of Venusaur since, while cool, it doesn't really fit Erika's team from a lore perspective, as she's only used it once, in _Stadium 2._ I get that Tangela isn't the best but it's one of her signature Pokémon so it's staying. And look, I know what you're thinking, WTF are you on about with putting an effin' PARASECT of all things on Erika's team? Well for one, she actually uses one in _Let's Go,_, it has less weaknesses than Exeggutor, resists about as many types, and most of its weaknesses beside Fire aren' that common as STAB type in these games. Plus I believe this is the only way to actually make this Pokmon into somewhat of a threat. Jumpluff is largely the same as before, but instead of Encore, it now has the fitting move Cotton Spore. Yeah Jumpluff doesn't really need to worry about being outsped much, but that move isn't there for Jumpluff. It now gives Parasect more of a chance to make the first move against your attempted sweep, and here's how we make Parasect an actual threat. With that lowered Speed, it can now outspeed and Spore you, and thanks to being so high-leveled, it has two decently powered STABs due to that Leech life buff which are also reliable ways to restore HP, AND a way to boost both of them at once. Wanna switch out? It'll just Spore you again. Finally, even if it doesn't have the best chances, we can finally allow Parasect to shine to at least some degree. Victreebel is identical to the original video, but Tangela now takes Venusaur's role, setting up Sunny Day with SolarBeam as well as recovery in Giga Drain and Stun Spore to again give it a better chance at sticking around. Finally Bellossom replaces Synthesis with Moonlight, which while identical to Synthesis is both humorous and is naturally learned by its prevolutions. Erika is not the most powerful but her focus is on playing the long game, which this team allows her to do quite well. * _Misty_ * Vaporeron♀ Lv. 62 Quagsire♀ Lv.61 Lanturn♀ Lv.61 - Surf - Blizzard - Surf - Earthquake - Surf - Ice Beam - Mist - Shadow Ball - Rain Dance - Ice Beam - Confuse Ray - Thunder Gyarados♀ Lv.62 Starmie Lv.63 - Hydro Pump - DragonBreath - Surf - Psychic - Flamethrower - Surf - Recover - Thunderbolt This one was difficult since there's so many good Waters for Misty to use but I decided to use a much different team compared to Smith. While Misty does have a Horsea in the anime she doesn't really use it, not to mention Kingdra and Lapras both make more sense for Clair to use, so I've dropped them from the team. It also doesn't make much sense to me for Golduck to be here since her Starmie does its job much better, so we're replacing it in the lead slot with Vaporeon (Psyduck makes more sense for her _RBY/FRLG_ fights anyway). Lanturn is also here instead of Surge's since it fits Misty's theme more and synergizes in terms of covering weaknesses with Quagsire. Lastly, since Gyarados is arguably Misty's strongest battler in the anime, we're giving her that as the lead up to her Starmie. Vaporeon is largely the same as the video, just with Blizzard for stronger Ice coverage and Mist over Acid Armor since it lacks any physical weakness and it prevents it being weakened by stat drops. Quagsire has Ice Beam over Amnesia, as a way to handle any Grass-types attempting to take it out. Lanturn allows Misty to take advantage of Quagsire's Rain Dance for powered-up Surfs and accurate Thunders, with Confuse Ray to annoy and Ice Beam for Grasses. Misty's Gyarados is also much different compared to the ones used by Clair and Lance, really utilizing that Water STAB with both Hydro Pump and Surf, DragonBreath to spread paralysis, and Flamethrower for the cool factor and to surprise any Grass-types that stayed in. Starmie is fine as it is to end off the fight, making Misty a lot less straightforward and predictable. * _Janine_ * Arbok♀ Lv. 61 Tentacruel♀ Lv.61 Weezing♀ Lv.62 - Sludge Bomb - Glare - Surf - Sludge Bomb - Sludge Bomb - Smokescreen - Giga Drain - Earthquake - Toxic - Ice Beam - Toxic - Fire Blast Crobat♀ Lv.62 Ariados♀ Lv.63 - Sludge Bomb - Toxic - Leech Life - Spider Web - Confuse Ray - Thief - Toxic - Sludge Bomb With Koga using a lot of the Poison-types in this generation, it's hard to choose a team that sets Janine apart, so I'm trying not to have much overlap between the two. So I decided to use her _B2W2_ Kanto Leaders Tournament team minus Venomoth. Ariados is the main Pokémon the character is associated with and given her newbie status it makes sense to have that be her ace instead. We're keeping the Crobat, Weezing, and Tentacruel, but we're also including Arbok since it does fit the ninja theme with its scaring nature, and to give it a notable trainer. This team shows her lack of experience as a Gym Leader with quote-on-quote 'offbeat' picks while still making her something of a challenge. While Arbok isn't much of a threat with Jessie, Janine can make it work by focusing on its unique strengths. Sludge Bomb is powerful STAB but its signature Glare now gives it an alternate means of spreading status, Giga Drain for recovery, and did you know this thing gets Earthquake? Sure it won't be Nidoqueen but it gives Janine more options. Tentacruel simply gets Ice Beam over Confuse Ray so improve its coverage against Grounds. And funny thing, I already gave Koga a Destiny Bond Weezing, so Janine got something different. Interesting, while similar to Smith's Weezing, Destiny Bond and Amnesia are replaced with Smokescreen and Toxic to make it more of a minor annoyance compared to Koga's, and her Crobat likewise has Thief over Pursuit (since ninjas do steal stuff). Finally, while Ariados isn't the most impressive, we're making do with what we've got, but it still impresses me that they didn't give Jasmine's its signature move Spider Web. So with that buffed Leech Life and Toxic alongside Sludge Bomb, Ariados can actually be a nuisance trapping your Pokémon and try to wittle its health down. This team ultimately shows that while new, Janine does have a lot of potential.

* _Sabrina_ * Mr. Mime♀ Lv. 63 Jynx♀ Lv.63 Hypno♀ Lv.64 - Psychic - Encore - Psychic - Ice Beam - Hypnosis - Dream Eater - Reflect - Ice Punch - Lovely Kiss - Nightmare - Disable - DynamicPunch Wobbuffet♀ Lv.64 Alakazam♀ Lv.65 - Counter - Mirror Coat - Psychic - Shadow Ball - Safeguard - Destiny Bond - Recover - Zap Cannon Since Will already uses the Slow twins, I made it so Sabrina uses more underrated Psychics but has unusual strategies to mess with opponents. Mr. Mime's only real change is the use of Reflect over Thunder Wave, in order to give its team some kind of respite against Dark-types. Jynx is a perfect set-up for her as alongside its STABs Psychic she uses Lovely Kiss in combination with Nightmare to sapping health away from opponents. Hypno is the real standout here as while it still uses the Hypnosis/Dream Eater combo, it can shut you down with Disable and hit Dark-types surprisingly hard with DynamicPunch thanks to its decent Attack. Of course Wobbuffet is still the same, but Alakazam goes above ThunderPunch and uses Zap Cannon, giving it the potential to paralyze you and really ruin your day. Overall, Sabrina requires a lot more playing around to succeed, fitting considering how she'll also be the one toying with you. * _Brock_ * Golem♂ Lv. 64 Sudowoodo♂ Lv.64 Aerodactyl♂ Lv.65 - Rock Slide - Earthquake - Rock Slide - Sunny Day - AncientPower - Sky Attack - Protect - Explosion - Curse - Rest - Whirlwind - Fire Blast Tyranitar♂ Lv.65 Onix♂ Lv.66 _(Focus Band) - Rock Slide - Pursuit - Rock Slide - Earthquake - Curse - Sandstorm - Swagger - Fissure Brock is always interesting when it comes to reworks and while Tyranitar in particular is a great addition, I don't understand having Brock use all the Gen 1 fossils since it just piles up on 4x weaknesses. So instead, Brock now has the only Fossil you can get within Pewter itself, Aerodactyl, and as a nod to the anime he also has a Sudowoodo. To only further reference the anime, Brock is now the only trainer in the entire game whose Pokémon have Egg moves, as a reference to his want to become a Pokémon Breeder. Golem doesn't really need Curse to be a powerhouse, so instead it now has Protect so it can at least get a boom off on something. His Sudowoodo can only attack with Rock Slide, but can boost them up with Curse, weaken your Waters with Sunny Day, and heal off any damage you do manage to get, on top of having no exploitable 4x weakness. Aerodactyl is near identical to the video, but has Whirlwind over Earthquake. The only thing worse than an omni-boost Aerodactyl is one that can constantly force out your answers to it. And speaking of switching, Tyranitar now has Pursuit over Crunch and Sandstorm over Thunderbolt. Yeah it doesn't boost Special Defense this generation but it helps to wear down opponents, plus Brock's ace will need all the help it can get. Speaking of which, yes, Brock still has his Onix, Jasmine is the only Steelix user we need here. However, that doesn't mean Onix can't still put in work. With its unique item for the region being the Focus Band, there is now a chance that it srvives despite your strongest hits. Notably, alongside its STABs it now has Swagger as opposed to Curse, as why worry about raising Attack when your Defense is among the highest in the game. More interesting, is that it also has an effin' one-hit-KO move in Fissure, and since you're likely to not be at the same level as Onix, not only is there little chance of the move failing but the lower level you are the more accurate it'll become. Imagine using a Surf on Onix only for it to survive with Focus Band and Fissure you back. Brock has now truly become terrifying within this situation. * _Blaine_ * Rapidash♂ Lv. 67 Magcargo♂ Lv.66 Ninetales♂ Lv.66 - Fire Blast - Sunny Day - Flamethrower - Amnesia - Fire Blast - Confuse Ray - Reflect - SolarBeam - Rest - Sleep Talk - Sunny Day - Shadow Ball Magmar♂ Lv.67 Arcanine♂ Lv.68 - Fire Blast - ThunderPunch - Fire Blast - Crunch - Sunny Day - Psychic - Curse - ExtremeSpeed I'm sorry, but we are not going to have Moltres here. I said it with Lance, it doesn't really feel like a Pokémon game if you seen non-battle facility trainers with legendaries. None of the trainers in Gen II really feel deserving of the legendary birds, and to be honest, it's honestly ok if they aren't in the game. You could even say they flew south to their homes on a series of islands, as a reference to the second Pokémon movie. If you really want them in the game though, there's tons of better options, either simply put the birds back in the same places they were in Gen I, maybe moving Moltres to Cinnabar or to near Mt. Silver, or put them on Red's team ala Greevil and have them stay on Mt. Silver's peak after he's beaten. I really hope I don't need to say all that again. Anyway, even without Moltres, Blaine has some serious options. Rapidash is largely the same but has Reflect over Double-Edge, and the reason is clear: after it goes down, Magcargo comes in. Yeah it has three 3x weaknesses but what is that to a Pokémon under Sun with Reflect set up who just RestTalks and builds up Special Defense with Amnesia while healing while sleeping with Rest (seriously this move is busted), all while dealing decent damage with Flamethrower. It may be odd but it is certainly the underslug here. Moving on, Nintetales and Magmar are largely the same, just with Ninetales having Confuse Ray instead of Magmar over Hypnosis, and Magmar having Sunny Day to extend the sun to Arcanine. Blaine's strategy is basically just Blue's as alongside a powered-up Crunch, ExtremeSpeed gains the benefits of the Attack boost while ignoring the lowered Speed. The Sunny Day from Magmar boosting Fire Blast doesn't hurt either. Overall, Blaine shows even without a legendary he can still give you a hard time. * _Blue_ * Exeggutor♂ Lv. 68 Aerodactyl♂ Lv.68 Alakazam♂ Lv.68 - Giga Drain - Psychic - Rock Slide - Sky Attack - Psychic - Shadow Ball - Sleep Powder - Leech Seed - AncientPower - Hyper Beam - Thunder Wave - Future Sight Arcanine♂ Lv.69 Umbreon♂ Lv.69 Pidgeot♂ Lv.70 - Flamethrower - DragonBreath - Bite - Moonlight - Sky Attack - Mirror Move - Iron Tail - ExtremeSpeed - Reflect - Psychic - Whirlwind - Steel Wing You remember what I just said literally just above this? Yeah...that....here....again...for Articuno. He don't need no competitive bird, ok? Starting to feel like beating a dead Ponyta at this point. Regardless, instead I've given Blue the bird he actually deserves, his classic Pidgeot. Now while his Arcanine, Alakazam, and Exeggutor are all staying, his Machamp is replaced with an Aerodactyl actually using the Rock STAB of Rhydon without the crippling weakness, and his Gyarados is replaced with a Pokémon his anime counterpart is well known for: Umbreon, giving him a defensive Pokémon that also happens to reference Red's Espeon. I've also chosen not to run Gyarados since, come on, we all know his starter was Blastoise (he just never uses it in Gym battles). I was considering including an Electabuzz to foreshadow Electivire, but that's probably going too far. Exeggutor is the same as the original, it just functions well as lead for Blue's team. Blue's Aerodactyl may share two moves with Brock's, but Blue isn't playing around, adding Rock Slide and Hyper Beam for pure power. Similarly, Alakazam is similar to Sabrina's but has Thunder Wave over Recover for speed control and Smith's ultra buffed Future Sight for further Psychic damage. Arcanine, compared to Blaine's is all about coverage, with DragonBreath and Iron Tail to cover anything Flamethrower and ExtremeSpeed can't. Actually, now that I think about, what a coincidence it is that Blue has the aces of the 5th, 6th, and 7th Gym leaders. His new Umbreon is a true wall to overcome, with Bites to flinch, Reflect and Psychic to deal with any Fighting-types, and Moonlight to gain HP. Good luck getting through this one quickly. And lastly, Blue's Pidgeot makes for a proud finish with Smith's improved Sky Attack, Mirror Move to use any attack you use against it, Whirlwind to constantly force out your answers, and Steel Wing to handle most that stay in. And there you have it, a fitting end to your Kanto journey with the power of a team that is only eclipsed by two others, being the rivals to you, and to Blue himself. If you made it this far, thank you so much for listening to my incessant ramblings regarding a 20+ year old game.

It made perfect sense that the levels were lower they should have maintained the older level caps from the old games to make better sense. They are gym leaders there to test trainers strengths. So either regionally they are there to test the level they preceive a trainer should be at, at that ln the journey Or they could be more dynamic like they showed Brock have the potential for the the Pokémon generations shorts (I believe it was) where they would choose their Pokémon based on the badges and communicated strengths of the player to be an appropriate level challenge. The first option can be interesting if the trainer is forced to basically start over with gen 1 starter of some kind potentially requiring a level cap check at gyms of sorts and play through that region but would basically be an odd stale remake of gen 1 with little to offer right after you just beat a whole region The second one has been a gripe for years that people wish they would implement and isn't something you'd be interested in doing as it deviates far to much for your goal.

Fun Fact: Sabrina was the only L I ever took in this game. When I took it, I tipped my hat and then fought my way forward through trainer battles using ONLY my Misdrevous (Kiki) and when I came back I revenge Shadow-Ball swept her under the fucking rug. That fight was rough, and though she humbled my ass I put my foot down and humbled her right back. Her Wobbufett was the biggest menace I ever had to deal with throughout the entirety of this Rom Hack.

Great video! I have a gameplan that can potentially make Brock a bigger headache for players Brock should lead with either Omastar or Kabutops. They each have one move swapped for Icy Wind. If they cannot KO the enemy Pokemon, they can use Icy Wind to slow the opponent Pokemon. Golem comes in and explodes on the opponent. This will likely kill the main special attack counter on the player team. Aerodactyl bursts in and applies intense offensive pressure. Hopefully, Aerodactyl does enough damage to score a KO or two before going down. Next, Omastar or Kabutops comes and uses Icy Wind again. When they are KO'd, Tyranitar comes in. Tyranitar drops either Cruch or Thunderbolt for Headbutt. Tyranitar takes advantage of the lower opponent speed to land Headbutt or Rock Slide before the player attacks. Hopefully, Tyranitar can get a few flinches in so that he can power up using Curse or simply flinch the opponent into submission. Finally, the mighty Steelix come in. Steelix swaps out Rock Slide for Swagger. I know this is risky, but the reward is worth it. Special attackers are hurt by the increase in attack because the damage from attacking itself will increase. Strong physical attackers can potentially do severe damage to themselves. If they do manage to land an attack, Steelix has enough defense to survive the hit. Hopefully, the confusion buys enough time for Steelix to curse up and mop up the remaining Pokémon on the player's team.

Fire Blast is stronger and not too unreliable at 85% accuracy, so i guess he just went for power, especially given the 5 PP boost all the 120 BP moves received. As for Solar Beam, Grass beats Ground, Rock, and Water, so it's one the best complements for a Fire mon under sun.
@Cr3zant

He's running a sun team pre-drought and abilities, he needs multiple sunny days to maintain the weather for consistency, solar beam is objectively the best coverage move for a fire based team in a sun team, and fire blast is just better than flamethrower for any mon that can learn both.

Taking notes from the anime & side games (Stadium 1 & 2) while teambuilding for any of the Kanto/Jotho gym leaders would be the right call. With Blaine replacing 1 of its pure Fire-type for a Rhydon & it makes sense if u take a look at its dex entries which states that it's able to live in molten lava thanks to its rugged hide protecting it from the heat. Sure, it adds even more of a weakness to Water as well as Solar Beam, but the Sun does cut their power in half & rest of the team resist Grass. Nidoking/Queen that Gary had could be an alternative & would parallel well to Giovanni, who used to be the final Kanto leader.
