I'm only an hour and twenty minutes in, but I have to say this is absolute insanity. I remember back in 2016, watching the original Red/Blue run and thinking it was extremely impressive, I was wondering what it would look like in GSC. Never in a million years would I have thought that someone would be crazy enough to even try, let alone actually do it. I'm even learning a couple new things about these games. The subtitles are a little poorly timed (and don't stay on screen long enough when watching at x2 speed) but other than that, this is going straight to my favorites. THIS is what deserves millions of views within days of posting, not the typical nonsense like "omg i unboxed a thing!!11"

First off. Amazing work done on the video. Three games at the same time requires a lot of work to be done, so hats off to you for that. But there are still two that are missing, although glitches are needed to capture them. #151 - Mew - Not too hard to obtain. Can be done by using the "TrainerFly glitch" in any of the Gen.1 games #251 - Celebi - Much more difficult to obtain, but it can be done by using the Coin Case to obtain a GS Ball.

Holy crap, this is awesome! Just to be clear, is this like three separate TASes playing at the same time or it also happens to be same input file for all three games? It's awesome enough to route a co-op from three games like this, so I'm imagining this isn't the case, but then again, I know TASers are all insanely good at their stuff, so, not impossible. Sometimes I see protagonists going opposite directions in the games, made me imagine this isn't same input file, but it's hard to know for sure (it's a grind based game after all, press up while one game has the character going down, then press down while the other game has the character going up, done, one input file now move the characters at different directions, easy enough)
@gabraltar7506

Three seperate TASes, yes. All three games use different inputs. Theyre part of the same file but the inputs for each game are differentiated (P1 Up, P2 Up, etc)

Looking at Bulbapedia seems like you need at least 7 games though - Diamond (Stunky), Pearl (Glameow), HeartGold or Soulsilver, Black (Tornadus), White (Thundurus), Black 2 (Regice), White 2 (Registeel).

Here's a little feedback: I usually use subtitles to know where to put my focus at certain moments. Meaning that if your subtitle is "What Silver just did is..." I probably missed it. I would suggest the approach "What Silver will do is..." which would let me acknowledge the subtitle and see what it is about without needing to rewind ;) tldr: Put the subtitles earlier :P

1:04:50 I was a bit surprised to see Yellow bypass the Ghost Marowak with a Doll. Having looked into it, I'm guessing you felt justified in using it because the main category of Gen 1 Any% Glitchless allows it too? Just found it interesting from a somewhat outside perspective on Pokemon speedruns.

it's somewhat controversial but it's generally considered to not be a glitch cause the pokedoll still works the way it was intended to, it's just being used in a place the devs might not have thought of. plus, leaked patch notes revealed that the devs were actually aware of this when developing Yellow and decided not to fix it

2:37:23 it would have been nice to get a little more explanation of what makes the manipulations hard and what actions the tas is taking ingame to manipulate rng. Surely it’s not 0-time to manip it most of the time right? Or it has to be set up well in advance? The repeated battle and encounter rng manipulation is something I’m sure a lot of time went into but it’s hard to appreciate it without understanding more of how it’s done.

it determines a bias symbol after you select your coins, which ends up being the symbol you can win. for reference, in normal mode, there is only a 2/256 chance for the bias symbol to be 7 (3/256 chance in lucky mode). the game will then scroll the wheel more or less if it wants you to win or not (and also uses golem or chansey events as well) you also only have an around 25% chance to keep the bias symbol as 7 after each win.

249 for Gen 2 and 150 for Gen 1. It's not 100%, but we can forgive them because Mew and Celebi aren't available in game, at least not in the original software. (The Virtual Console version of Crystal edited the GS Ball event so it would happen after you beat the Elite 4 instead of using a phone code, so these people can get a free Celebi. Mew, sadly, would require the Mew Glitch and this is glitchless. ;))

Can you imagine this with Gen 3? Seven screens at once for Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Fire Red, Leaf Green, Colosseum, and XD. Ruby and Sapphire would need 381 Pokémon (all except Mythicals and Chikorita due to game error). Emerald, Fire Red, and Leaf Green would need 380 (all except Mythicals, Lugia, and Ho-oh). Colosseum and XD would purely be to help the others complete their dexes giving Ruby and Sapphire Ho-oh and Lugia as well as Johto starters that take way too long to get just from Emerald.

if I did this with gen 3, there's no way i'm doing it for the national dex. There's still a diploma for regional dex in both RS and FRLG. I have planned routes for both versions but I can't work on it yet cause linking isn't out for bizhawk

IIRC, Ruby OR Sapphire can be skipped. Still absurd. Especially since for this kind of thing you'll want to have a Japanese Ruby or Sapphire thrown in the mix to add Celebi from the JP Colo bonus disc (Gen 3 actually does support cross region trades), have to do the Mt. Battle challenge for Ho-Oh, and there's a *lot* of breeding involved.
@envy8228
@envy8228 9 ай бұрын
I'm curious, what would it take to make a Gen 3 coop diploma? For just tbe regional dex, it would just be Ruby and Sapphire, but would it be worth going for a national dex in Gen 3? Do the games even give you a diploma for the national dex?
@gabraltar7506
@gabraltar7506 9 ай бұрын
for both Ruby Sapphire and FRLG, you can get a diploma for each games respective regional dex. Im currently working on FRLG diploma and hope to get RS diploma done afterwards there is a diploma for national dex in all three games but you need like, 5 different games to have access to all of the pokes (ruby, sapphire, fire red, leaf green but not emerald still leaves you without several johto pokemon). there emulator for linking (gbahawk) isnt able to run that many games and even if it could, it would honestly be way way more work than even this tas (emerald would need to complete the hoenn dex *three times* for the johto starters) and would be very difficult to watch and keep track of all 5 games. so sadly, I dont think it will ever happen
@gabraltar7506
@gabraltar7506 9 ай бұрын
to elaborate further, you could make it more lenient with Pokemon XD, which has all of the hoenn mons missing from Emerald (thus eliminating the need for Ruby and Sapphire) and those two games alongside FRLG would be enough to complete the national dex. as a bonus, XD also has a way of getting the johto starters. However, having a game on a completely separate console than the gba games adds some extreme complications and I dont know if we'll ever have a tasable emulator that can link gamecube games with gba games, not to mention it is still at least 5 times more work than this tas
@envy8228

4:20:30 is when every game is at some point in their endgame. Mostly keeping a record for myself when I come back to this one lol Also. 2:55:26 is the start to the Lugia quest. Everything else major is after endgame from what I saw

Are the inputs shared?

no, all three games use different inputs. they're part of the same file but each game has their input differentiated (P1 Up, P2 Up, etc)

clearly you have a hack on the Yellow NOBODY hits crits and takes out Brock with Gust like that straight cheat...done at the point yellow got boulder badge. lame mankey can beat brock you dont need to cheat.

Inputs are done to nudge the random number generator to roll numbers that result in you getting critical hits when you want them and the opponent to miss. In gen 1, because the check for accuracy is to pick a number between 0 and 255 and see if the result is "less than" 255*Accuracy and not "less than or equal to", even moves that should be 100% have a 1/256 chance of failing. Save states, memory viewer, and scripting are used to know when these moments will happen.
