Another tech followed the Subaru troubleshooting and ended up replacing the steering rack AND the control module. The issue was never fixed. Turns out that the power wire connects to the battery positive terminal and the nut was loose! Cleaned up the connector, tightened that baby, and the issue is gone. 🤣 I can only guess that someone got confused while replacing the battery and never tightened all the connected wires afterwards.

So right about these being the most frustrating yet simple fixes. I just recently bought an E46 and spent a good bit of money replacing the radiator, fan, expansion tank, , etc and the fan still wouldn’t work so I ended up bringing it to a shop. He pulled the entire wiring harness out and it turns out the wire carrying the Pulse Width Modulation signal back to the fan from the ECM had burned up so it needs to be replaced.
@milcotto41534 жыл бұрын
The signal wire burned up? Was it too thin? If you didn't find the root cause, that might happen again. If the wire carried signals FROM the ECM TO the fan, that could mean that there is a computer program bug there. Or the wire is too thin for the voltage of the signal.
@milcotto41534 жыл бұрын
'High-level digital outputs - On many modern cars, the ECU fires the spark plugs, opens and closes the fuel injectors and turns the cooling fan on and off. All of these tasks require digital outputs. A digital output is either on or off -- there is no in-between. For instance, an output for controlling the cooling fan might provide 12 V and 0.5 amps to the fan relay when it is on, and 0 V when it is off. The digital output itself is like a relay. The tiny amount of power that the processor can output energizes the transistor in the digital output, allowing it to supply a much larger amount of power to the cooling fan relay, which in turn provides a still larger amount of power to the cooling fan.' The link to that article is in the next comment, in case it ends up in the spam folder.

If these are indeed the OEM M3 wheels it will be pretty easy to find out if they are the wrong way around, since the wheels measurements like offset and width of the Rim will be stamped on the rear of the spokes. So take one of the front ones and one of the rear ones and check, the ones on your M3 look like the stock Style 67 18" wheels, wich means the front ones should be 18x8 with an offset of 47 and the rear ones should be 18x9 with an offset of 26. stock tiresizes for those would be 225 45 18 in the front and 255 40 18 in the rear.

That's his 'disposal' plan for the cars he doesn't finish. If they turn to dust and disappear, he can claim he finished / sold it. :)

A great job of troubleshooting, BUT you should have re-wrapped the the feed cables for future protection (lots of amps there) and ALSO replaced the nut & washer with either copper or brass, as the steel fittings will corrode in short order! A clue here is the wire mounting stud on the solenoid: looks like copper to me - Do not use dissimilar metals for reattachment!

The wheels are a square setup. Look good refurbished with lower rideheight, around -2.5 front camber and a 10-12mm rear spacer. I had a set on mine. Check the common failure points: Vanos Rear boot floor cracks at subframe mounting points. Rod bearings should be replaced at 140k if there is no history. Other points to look at: Upper chain tensioner. Check followers for wear. Cooling system (all bmw's) Head gasket.

Yeah I was going to say that too...specially since he had to remove the intake to get to it....I also would have been prone to use a locknut or lock washer as well in case that it vibrated loose over time.

You have a square set of style 67s, or four rear wheels (18x9”s). This is popular in the E46 M3 community, as it’s a cheap way to run a 265/35 squared set up.

I went thru several rebuilt alternators on a Pontiac Grand Prix before I got a good one. The same happened on a Buick Regal a few years later, so I decided to put on a lifetime guaranteed Delco alternator & the dealer ended up replacing that alternator 2 more times before I sold the car at 150,000 miles.

If you're working on Valeo alternators and the bearing is good, just order the voltage regulator itself. You can get an OEM Valeo regulator for about $40.

They're OEM Wheels. The previous owner installed all 4 "rear" wheels, which are more aggressive and that makes them poke up front. It's a common wheel set up, especially for those who track these cars. With a square set of tires and some camber up front, they look and perform great. Google "Style 67 square set up E46 M3" for more information.

Imagine being Sam crac, a full days work for you is apparently tightening the bolts on a starter paying a body shop to figure out a new front bumper and then plugging some gas station Bluetooth earbuds.. you a real mechanic swear

Regarding the codes, clear them and see if they come back now that you fixed the charging issue. Just to be sure. BMWs are known to be sensitive to low voltage.

Please keep the original wheels if they are indeed factory and I suspect they certainly are. Spend the coin and get them refurbished as this model looks great rolling on those m3 rims

Best to coat those connections in dielectric grease to improve conductivity and minimize corrosion risks

I got my 911 dirt cheap because the charging system was dead and it ruined two alternators. After charging the battery and starting the car, every dash light would stay on. I trailered it home and started diagnosis. I checked all the grounds first. Sure enough, one was bad due to a small amount of corrosion. I replaced the alternator again with a factory Bosh alternator and it runs great. Cost to repair - parts $800 (the alternator is ridiculously expensive because it has a special pulley with a clutch), labor 3 hours. Savings, about $6000.
