@Fitz the dragon it depends what language youre intending it to be used; theres also different approaches to it if you purely ignore aesthetics and make this for english, indonesian’s alphabet is a good baseline where the ch sound just uses c, the rest of the letters are comparable to their IPA counterparts except making y be /j/ like in a lot of languages the “useless letters” would be x and q although i think /ks/ is the only *pair* of unvoiced consonants that becomes voiced intervocalically, so i think its reasonable to let x be its own letter still (also to reduce total letters used to for a given word) you could also argue getting rid of y and w and replacing with i and u now if you went with this guy’s approach where you use letter names, i gueeeeess you could have q for the sole purpose of the word queue (when you could just write cue within current spelling rules) changing the current english alphabet would also need you to account for what spelling system to use; if we completely change it to be more phonemic, the letter name approach would not work. and regardless of which you use, youre going to need to add at least one or two new vowel letters to account for all of them i would give you more than this whole ass essay but you can take that to my twitter dms if you care enough

As a speaker of a Nordic language, I am relieved that an English speaker finally realized that W should be called double V and not double U. I am so furious that this sadly is the case in real life, yet I am pleased knowing that at least some people understand what bullshit they are putting up with trying to convince other non-native English speakers that their W is a double U and not a double V.
@wolf10662 жыл бұрын
In English, the sounds of U and V are quite different and W is closer to the U sound than a V sound. Also, English - for all its Saxon + Norman French bastard heritage - draws on the older Celtic languages of Britain, and you will notice that in certain surviving Celtic languages - such as Welsh - the W is indeed a double "U" sound. In short, W is a vowel in certain "British" languages, despite being viewed as a consonant in modern English. Therefore "double-U" not "double-V". Unlike Germans and others, we do not pronounce the W like a V.
@Bismarck-S2 жыл бұрын
@@wolf1066 This all is bullsh*t. The real reasons is because of romans and how their V's were pronounced as U's, and I knew that when I wrote the comment, yet my point still stands.
@wolf10662 жыл бұрын
@@Bismarck-S Yes, I know that the V was a U sound in Latin. That still does not alter the fact that the W is pronounced like a literal double-U in the Welsh language and similarly-enough to a U in English words. So it's not remotely a "double V".

jan misali has a very good video on the letter w and why/how that happened. the video is called: w
@Mescha_2 жыл бұрын
That's actually very interesting. I'm studying German and learned this recently for an exam. The letter W did not exist in the early Middle Ages, nor was it pronounced as such, but as a double UU (I’m talking for German right now. Could be same for english cause the languages are related) It is due to the medieval script, which often wrote U as V (but it was pronounced U. Just written as V). So the W developed from the double VV (which is a double UU) and got a new sound over time (cause shit was hard to say back then and they wanted it easier). In English it’s called double U because it was indeed a double UU. In French it’s called double V because the letter looked like a double VV. In German we call it „Weh“ because it evolved in a totally new letter (and sound), so you know.. it needs a new name.

Fun fact: When first invented the manual typewriters, they had keys arranged in an alphabetical order, but people typed so fast that the mechanical character arms got "tangled up". So the keys were randomly positioned to "slow down" typing and prevent key jams.
@liagamer42652 жыл бұрын
Thats funny because we still type fast, just got adjusted to the new order :)
@lelrond2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the actual problem wasn't people typing too fast, as they were required to keep up with conversations for the sake of logging. The issue with an alphabetical order was more about how many often used letters lied next to or near each other. Though that could obviously have been prevented by typing slower, that wasn't really a viable option if typewriting was to be used i.e. in courts, so the order was changed to *preserve* pace, not slow it down.

@skyemonkey18222 жыл бұрын
typewriters are long gone, why do we keep using QWERTY or DVORAK?? Let the next gen follow the alphabetical order, while the QWERTY users can choose between old and new versions. Millennials have been through the transitioning of floppy disks to CDs to smartphones, keyboard transition is not that challenging. Even though I'm very used to QWERTY, it's like an ITCH in my brain because there is no valid reason to follow QWERTY anymore. If someone could help scratch this itch, it would be much appreciated.
