A, B, O actually works really well as the starting letters cuz then the first three letters would also be the blood types and it’d be really easy to change any mention of “the ABC’s” cuz you could just finish off the curve with a sharpie. Keyboard order is good too tho

@@mmiaxyz ABO (alpha, beta, omega) is another term for omegaverse, a story trope in where humans are divided into three biological classes - alpha, beta, and omega - and experience rut/heat cycles regardless of gender. Alphas are at the top of the hierarchy and go through rut cycles. Betas are basically your average person. And omegas are at the bottom of the hierarchy and are the ones who go into heat. There are many ways one can go about writing it but it's because of this central idea that works that feature this trope are usually NSFW. Again, not always but usually.

However, our Swiss and Belgian neighboors have the goodness to use "septente" (seventy) for "soixante-dix" (sixty-ten), "huitante" (eighty) for "quatre-vingt" (four-twenty) and "nonante" (ninety) for "quatre-vingt-dix" (four-twenty-ten). If I'm not mistaken, there are two ways to write it: - by using the concepts of the symbols, where that bird probably means "baby chicken" - by the first sound of each symbol, so say the name of the word is 'chicken', then the symbol would represent the sound 'ch' makes if used as a sound instead of a concept.

@Fitz the dragon it depends what language youre intending it to be used; theres also different approaches to it if you purely ignore aesthetics and make this for english, indonesian’s alphabet is a good baseline where the ch sound just uses c, the rest of the letters are comparable to their IPA counterparts except making y be /j/ like in a lot of languages the “useless letters” would be x and q although i think /ks/ is the only *pair* of unvoiced consonants that becomes voiced intervocalically, so i think its reasonable to let x be its own letter still (also to reduce total letters used to for a given word) you could also argue getting rid of y and w and replacing with i and u now if you went with this guy’s approach where you use letter names, i gueeeeess you could have q for the sole purpose of the word queue (when you could just write cue within current spelling rules) changing the current english alphabet would also need you to account for what spelling system to use; if we completely change it to be more phonemic, the letter name approach would not work. and regardless of which you use, youre going to need to add at least one or two new vowel letters to account for all of them i would give you more than this whole ass essay but you can take that to my twitter dms if you care enough

@Fitz the dragon not necessarily i just mentioned that there could be an argument for keeping x if i were to make my own alphabet that kept x, id make it only represent /ks/ not including when the s is a morpheme (e.g. plural, possessive, a verb tense, etc) so box and relax would have x but hacks would not

As a speaker of a Nordic language, I am relieved that an English speaker finally realized that W should be called double V and not double U. I am so furious that this sadly is the case in real life, yet I am pleased knowing that at least some people understand what bullshit they are putting up with trying to convince other non-native English speakers that their W is a double U and not a double V.
@wolf1066
@wolf1066 2 жыл бұрын
In English, the sounds of U and V are quite different and W is closer to the U sound than a V sound. Also, English - for all its Saxon + Norman French bastard heritage - draws on the older Celtic languages of Britain, and you will notice that in certain surviving Celtic languages - such as Welsh - the W is indeed a double "U" sound. In short, W is a vowel in certain "British" languages, despite being viewed as a consonant in modern English. Therefore "double-U" not "double-V". Unlike Germans and others, we do not pronounce the W like a V.
@Bismarck-S
@Bismarck-S 2 жыл бұрын

@@Bismarck-S Yes, I know that the V was a U sound in Latin. That still does not alter the fact that the W is pronounced like a literal double-U in the Welsh language and similarly-enough to a U in English words. So it's not remotely a "double V".

@Mescha_
@Mescha_ 2 жыл бұрын
That's actually very interesting. I'm studying German and learned this recently for an exam. The letter W did not exist in the early Middle Ages, nor was it pronounced as such, but as a double UU (I’m talking for German right now. Could be same for english cause the languages are related) It is due to the medieval script, which often wrote U as V (but it was pronounced U. Just written as V). So the W developed from the double VV (which is a double UU) and got a new sound over time (cause shit was hard to say back then and they wanted it easier). In English it’s called double U because it was indeed a double UU. In French it’s called double V because the letter looked like a double VV. In German we call it „Weh“ because it evolved in a totally new letter (and sound), so you know.. it needs a new name.

This is the "cursive" of russian doctors. Almost all of them write that badly. That's why many Russians are used to deciphering such cursive. The picture says something about pregnancy, no complaints, satisfactory condition. On the left it says t=36.6°C, blood pressure 100/60.

I went through so many emotions with this. At first, I felt my heart drop when the C was removed. I felt confusion at the Q's death. I laughed for a time, and when we reached the end I was upset, angry even. But thankfully, it was all saved when you reintroduced BIRD to the alphabet, my heart has been lifted and my life is complete. Goodbye xylophone but written in cursive, you will be missed.

I always thought C would be better off meaning "ch" instead of having a dedicated pairing for that sound, and then it wouldn't take up the same spot as S or K either. Chart becomes cart. Cart would be spelled kart. Much would be spelled Muc. Cildren, Cosen, Coose, Ouc, etc. You get the idea. Spelling "much" as "mush" made me think of sharing this, thanks to the captions at 4:47 And we might as well use the bird symbol for "sh" too, because why not.

5:08 Actually that's a handwriting in Russian. For those who wonder, it's a medical record entry (the infamous doctor's handwriting in Russian-speaking countries). Though it's almost completely in Russian, there's some Latin script letters (notice "t 36,6" at the beginning of the second line, which is a normal temperature in °C). Not sure I could decipher 100% of it, but most of it is still barely readable, once you know what to expect.

Fun fact: When first invented the manual typewriters, they had keys arranged in an alphabetical order, but people typed so fast that the mechanical character arms got "tangled up". So the keys were randomly positioned to "slow down" typing and prevent key jams.

Thats funny because we still type fast, just got adjusted to the new order :)
@lelrond
@lelrond 2 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the actual problem wasn't people typing too fast, as they were required to keep up with conversations for the sake of logging. The issue with an alphabetical order was more about how many often used letters lied next to or near each other. Though that could obviously have been prevented by typing slower, that wasn't really a viable option if typewriting was to be used i.e. in courts, so the order was changed to *preserve* pace, not slow it down.

I guess nobody understand Now how old typewriters worked. Today order was truly arranged to slow down typing. For example in past there was czech (i think, but i'm not 100% sure) attempt organize letters according to their usage. I don't know what was So different compare to others letter orders, but problém was same. Mechanical parts was slower than writing person.

typewriters are long gone, why do we keep using QWERTY or DVORAK?? Let the next gen follow the alphabetical order, while the QWERTY users can choose between old and new versions. Millennials have been through the transitioning of floppy disks to CDs to smartphones, keyboard transition is not that challenging. Even though I'm very used to QWERTY, it's like an ITCH in my brain because there is no valid reason to follow QWERTY anymore. If someone could help scratch this itch, it would be much appreciated.
