The way they score is by ranking. Astrobot is so flawless that it will almost always land in the top 3 of every critic. While wukong, ff7, metaphor , all have their weaknesses, so will likely land on the bottom 2 of some critics. That is the criteria how flawless is the game.

Pretty much all the hate Astro Bot is getting is from people who haven't played the game. Anyone who has played it isn't surprised that it was nominated for game of the year, but was a likely contender to win, which it did. I'm so happy that in 2024, a 3D platformer beat the oh so precious be all end all Soulslike game and Soulslike DLC. I can understand Soulslike fans being pissed off though. Overwatch won over Uncharted 4 in 2016 which I still think is the worst decision. I love God of War but I think Red Dead Redemption 2 should've won in 2018. I thought Ghost of Tsushima was a clear winner over Last of Us part 2 in 2020. Finally in 2022, I thought God of War Ragnarok should've won over Elden Ring for the simple fact that I'm not a Soulslike fanboy and I don't bust a nut at the sight of a Soulslike game. I wonder if Final Fantasy VII Rebirth won, would people still be crying and saying that it was rigged by Sony? The company that didn't win game of the year last year, and the year before that, and the year before that.

Astro Bot's win was well deserved. It really goes to show that those who hated Astro's win didnt play the game at all. The game is flawless on story, audio design, level design, everything is just top tier. Simple yet exciting little game.I played the game with my husband and loved every single bit. Love that you can FEEL like youre in the game when you step onto different surfaces with the PS5 controller. Sidenote: Astro's Playroom is a FREE full fledged game on PS5 and contains so many cute cameos and amazing worlds within such a small game. Small yet mighty. This game and Astro Bot are a love letter to the history of Playsation/Sony. Also Asmongold can take the L like the loser he is :)

There were a bunch of games that deserved to win. Astro Bot was one of them. People conflate certain styles of graphics and levels of difficulty in gameplay as being childish, being bad, whatever. Just because Wukong was harder than Astro Bot doesn't mean it was better. Just because it had a graphic style closer to realism and Astro had a graphic style closer to animation doesn't mean Wukong was better. This is why game of the year's determination is 90% votes from a panel of game journalists and 10% from fans. A game having more fans doesn't mean it's a better game, it means there's a larger demographic of people who enjoy that type of game, and unfortunately a TON of those people, males aged 16 - 40, exclusively play games like Wukong and shit on games like Astro Bot because it isn't a "real game" since you don't die 600 times fighting the same damage sponge before moving to the next.

I don't understand how some people are surprised by Astro Bot's win. It's the highest MC scored game with both critics and players, higher than anything on this list. It also got the most nominations and picked up the most awards here. It was my favorite game of the year in terms of pure fun and solid gameplay, as well as an homage to gaming. I normally plays Souls likes like Bloodborne, Wukong, and Elden Ring, and RPGs like FF7 Remake, netting the platinum for that this year. But the most fun I had this year was with Astrobot. I'm glad it won and I hope it will lead to more platformers in the future, especially Jak and Dax and Sly Cooper. It's been a long time coming.

I don’t like that Astro Bot won NOT bc it was a bad game, but I heavily dislike that a game that spawned from a FREE DEMO won over FF7 REBIRTH (100+ hour joy ride) and Wukong which was an amazing project. These two titles had so much heart and soul in them that seeing them lose to a very simple game is very unsettling (this is not me saying Astro Bot doesn’t have these qualities) I also think the message of “Fun Gameplay > Graphics/Spectacle” kinda gets really muddled too bc … are we saying every other game nominated didn’t have fun gameplay? Fun is subjective, and I don’t think anyone is saying “Astro Bot shouldn’t have won bc it’s not a fun game”, they simply enjoyed the other games more. Rebirth has some of the most fun gameplay in any RPG I’ve ever played and how they changed it from the previous title felt like they understood the systems they made inside in out. I don’t need every game to have amazing graphics, deep rich story telling, and characters that I grow emotionally attached to, but when it’s DONE WELL it should deserve applause. That applause wasn’t felt the entire night (I offer a peace offering tho, DLC’s shouldn’t be contending for Goty)

GOTY is mostly determined by gaming media, and it's gaming media that put Astro Bot a full THIRTEEN points ahead of Wukong on Metacritic. That's a massive gap. Originally I was against Astrobot taking GOTY. Admittidly had not played it. After playing it, I still personally believe that FFVII: Rebirth is my GOTY. But I totally respect why Astrobot won. Especially since I have had the thought of how games were during the PS2 era where games were just fun to play. They didn't need to be cinematic and story heavy. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy games like that as well.

People need to quit crying about it already. I wanted to see Silent Hill 2 and Stellar Blade win a few awards i thought they deserved, but they didnt. I'm not sitting here crying about it cause as long as I enjoyed them thats what matters. Astro Bot deserved it. It's hands down was not only the highest and best received game from those who played it, but it is the best non Mario platformer in easily the last 20 years. A lot of voters were split between Black Myth, FF7, and Metaphor which all stole votes from each other at having a chance. People need to stop being so salty about this, though. Team Asobi deserved the win and I am so happy for them.

I wanted Astro Bot or FF7 to win, so I was more than pleased. (The only game I didn't play was Balatro, it looks awesome and I'm always for Indie stuff to win as well)

I can guarantee that if a Mario game won GOTY, nobody would be complaining at all. Astro winning is a message to publishers & game developers that you don't need to be a hundreds of millions of dollars & take 4-5 years to make to be GOTY. The game industry has lost their creativity & innovation, which is why the game director of Astro shouted out Nintendo at the end.

Wu kong was never gonna win at all. But like final fantasy or metaphor were definently the frontrunners. Its just that astro bot is way too short. I dont care if its a platformer getting goty but its like a 10/10 15 hour game which is not really replayable against 2 10/10 100+ hour games which are really replayable.

As someone who's played it, AstroBot is a great platformer. As for GOTY worthy? Probably not. But it doesn't deserve the hate it's getting. Honestly, I couldn't care less who won in this awards show. At the end of the day, it's just Geoff Keighley slobbering over anything Sony-related with a bunch of sponsors attached to it. Never take the VGAs seriously.

Tbf when the other competitors are a card game, a dlc, a remake, a title that was shunned by the industry cause of the company that produced it and a decent anime game made by the persona devs. It was really just Metaphor vs Astro bot for goty. However considering the dogshit that was produced this year from ‘AAA’ or ‘AAAA’ companies. There wasn’t much competition at all.
