Awesome! Glad you are diving into the deep end on animation. It is definitely hard. To make the character move in a believable manner you have to learn body mechanics. To learn body mechanics you have to learn the basics of squash and stretch, follow-through, and other things. Try the bouncing ball exercise. Try the pendulum exercise. When you get to body mechanics, the thing I believe that makes the biggest difference is weight shifting. For example, if you lift a foot without first shifting the weight of the body, then it looks very odd. Good luck and keep at it!

with that kind of model, you don't need to weight paint. you can treat that as a mechanical character with separate joints and appendages. you only need to parent each part to it's respective joint. you do weight painting when the geometry is organically connected and it needs to deform naturally as the joints move. oh and model your character at a T pose if you are gonna weight paint.

start with learning a simple walk cycle. learn the basics like how the head should move up and down following a curve as you shift weights. learn a bit of basic 2d animation. learn your key poses and extremes. then learn how to do in betweens. you can do a walk cycle with just 30 frames. some do it with just 15.
