fun fact about spinning plates: From CitizenInsane: "Like Spinning Plates" was born out of frustration over an electronic version of "I Will" from the Kid A sessions… Not knowing what to do with [the "dodgy Kraftwerk version"], someone had the idea to reverse it and played it backwards… The reversed backing with its eerie pulse was apparently way more exciting than the ill-fated forward recording, and Thom was also hearing a melody in parts of his reversed vocal of "I Will", which inspired him to write something he could sing over this recording. He went to his notebooks, pieced a set of lyrics together (perhaps using the "cut up lines pulled out of a top hat" method again), thereby creating a new song, "Like Spinning Plates". However, just singing the new melody and lyrics straight over the pulsing backing track was not good enough. Something different was needed. Perhaps someone had the idea to reflect the fact, that this song came out of turning something backwards, in the singing as well. How about having a backwards vocal track that sounds as if it was sung forwards? So basically, the band flipped the electronic version of "I Will" backwards an found it to be more interesting, so Thom wrote new lyrics and learned to sing them backwards so that when the vocal track was also flipped, it would have an otherworldly, alien quality while still being sung in English. Then the band rearranged "I Will" for Hail to the Thief.

Some people call this album Kid A B-sides and write it off as nothing more than that, but I really like it. The lack of cohesion in of itself becomes cohesion; it feels like a series of incredibly deranged dreams you would have over many nights. Fun fact: two songs on here are built off of demo versions of tracks that would appear on later albums: Like Spinning Plates was an electronic demo of I Will and Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors was a demo of True Love Waits.

10:43 I think what you're talking about here is Everywhere at the End of Time by The Caretaker, it's a 6 and a half hour compilation of 6 albums, each album being a different stage of dementia/Alzheimer's disease. I love that album, it is a work of art and makes you feel very uncomfortable and emotional by the end. It makes you understand how dementia feels. My great grandparents both have suffered with dementia, my great grandfather died from the disease in 2018. After listening to that album, it makes you understand how it feels, later on referencing tracks you heard at the beginning, but altered slightly, making you feel confused. I would be surprised if you've listened to the whole thing, its really long and it gets uncomfortable at times.

Kid A Mnesia is the re-release of both albums as one, like it was intended. They complement each other so well. Framed together, they make a lot more sense than either alone. Kid A is a 10/10. Amnesiac is a 8.5/10. Together, they are 11/10 because of the continuing narrative, a world unleashed on itself where the institutions and cultures work against itself. Thom had seen his entire goal of becoming a successful artist turn against him. He saw the introduction of the internet and globalism and heard the fears many of us did not hear, including me, as I was very optimistic about globalism and the internet. I am not anti-globalism or internet now. I just recognize that I was naive in my expectations and seek now to re-adjust. Globalism is the only way to tame out of control capitalism and global climate crisis. But right now, it fuels both. The internet is the only way to get to the age of wisdom. Right now, it adds to the age of know-nothingism. Maybe Thom will drop optimism in Rad10head. I hope he sees something good on the horizon of humanity.

When they came to chose the tracks from what remained for Amnesiac they didn't have a closing track they were happy with and had to record one, after Kid A was released.

@@WordAte it's a funny way of looking at things to me - it is very common for an artist recording an album to record more tracks than they need, and it's not that their intention is to cram every track onto the album, the intention is that once they can hear what they've got they choose what they think would be best for the album making the rest outtakes.

@jamesfoley3990 24 күн бұрын
Actually, it's a CLARINET. I had a laugh when you corrected yourself in thinking it was a flute rather than a saxophone, when it turns out it was actually neither! The clarinet has an insane range, which is why it's able to play so high in the middle of life in a glasshouse, and so low at the end of the song. The lower range of a saxophone is very difficult to play well without special techniques, and the timbre of the instrument makes it a clarinet for sure. Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone were actually one of the earliest forms of jazz, before saxophone became much more popular in bands, so it's really neat to see Radiohead incorporate an older style in their music. Great video, definitely subscribing!

Amnesiac picks up where Kid A left off - recorded during the same sessions as its companion. Thom Yorke has compared the sound of Amnesic like this: "If you look at the artwork for 'Kid A'... well that's like looking at a fire from afar. 'Amnesiac' is the sound of what it feels like to be standing in the fire." IMHO Kid A is how an institution might label an amnesiac child, so again Kid A is about people looking at the child from the outside, and Amnesiac is how it feels from the inside. What any of that really means, your guess is as good as mine. Amnesiac was a library book - versions of it came as a small hardcover book with a library card in the back. Kid A also came in a book form, altho that book looked like a child's picture book. I F with all versions of Radiohead; Pyramid Song may be my all time favorite.

I view this album as depicting different periods of time, with PLSIACTB representing both cavemen and Wall Street-esque stockbrokers, Pyramid Song depicting Egyptian culture, YAWA referencing the Holy Roman Empire (medieval), in IMBW the singer reflects on mortality and religion (could be about Catholicism vs Protestantism), Knives Out is about love and war, Dollars and Cents mentions you vs me voodoo capitalism (ig 20th century economics?), LSP is about war throughout history, and LIAGH sonically is based off of a New Orleans jazz funeral. (But this is all just a theory 😂😅) Also fun fact this is the only Radiohead album to be ENTIRELY in 4/4

As a massive Thom Yorke fan I listen to Amnesiac more than Kid A to be honest. I would also recommend listening to King Of Limbs, not a favourite with RH fans but it is only eight tracks and has some great moments.

You should rly consider listening to the 'Aroura' album from Daisy Jones & The Six. Was made in 2023 for the TV show 'Daisy Jones & The six' but it was about a band from the 70's (heavily inspired by Fleetwood Mac) so the sound you get is UNREAL! would love to watch ur reaction

i don't know if you got recommended the pixies but you need to listen to them. this band was the influence of many of the grunge bands like Nirvana.
