I can't wrap my head around NY rent. That "cheap" apartment costs as much as the mortgage on a $250,000 house where I am. And under typical conditions, you can sell that house for a substantial profit after living there a few years. Very different dynamic I guess.

Sheepshead Bay is a traditional NYC outer-borough ethnic neighborhood. Once mostly Italian and Jewish, it now is more Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese. Still a safe neighborhood, comprised of old and some very new apartment buildings, and 1 and 2 family private homes. Depending where you move to in Sheepshead Bay it might even be possible to own a small car.

Lol that is my old building! I had a studio for 1200 and then a 2 bedroom apartment for 1500 down the street by the stop and shop and the hardware store! It’s a nice, quite, and calm area. Really good if you have a family/ kids ❤

If I was young and single or married with no children, this would definitely work. I would buy a couch that has a bed. Then I wouldn’t need both. The neighborhood is really nice and has a lot there. I think a 40 minute commute isn’t that bad. My husband drives an hour to work where we live. It’s certainly doable and the price isn’t that bad.
@MamaCarola1
@MamaCarola1 9 ай бұрын
I love the old school type of buildings that have character. I can guarantee that the lobby area used to be filled with furniture. For a studio the kitchen has a surprising number of cabinets & it looks like it has been renovated in the recent past. That wall hamper in the bathroom is great. So many of them have been painted shut or totally removed in renovations. The toilet has a newer flushometer than the old ones but still nice pressure. For someone starting out this is a great place. & rent stabilized??? Bet it's already gone. The 40 minute commute wouldn't bother me. Live in Eastern Queens near the Nassau border & you need a bus & subway. I don't think people realize how large NYC is

When I lived and worked in the suburbs of Miami Florida it often took me 2 hours to drive 17 miles from my home to my work and usually it took about an hour. It was very stressful and tedious to do this every day; it literally drove me crazy! So give me a 40 minute commute on an express subway train any day.
@MamaCarola1
@MamaCarola1 9 ай бұрын
@@edwardmiessner6502 I hear you. Certain areas in the city also have express bus service from the outer boroughs. It's more expensive but you're not dealing with overcrowded subways

Basically a nice apartment at an affordable price. I love the lobby - so art Deco. That is what is so nice about old school buildings - all the character and charm. And laundry in the building - I would sign up if I did not live in Chicago. lol. It is definitely a great place.

I can't live without a garden but this is a reasonably priced studio and I'm sure it will be snapped up pretty soon. Bathroon could do with a re grouting but I really like that classic green and black colour scheme. Rent stabilised, in building laundry and a lift too.

I would buy materials to build a temp wall (cubicle style) to better hide my bedroom space from my livingroom/dining space. In my current house, there is no closet in my bedroom, so I bought an antique broom closet and refinished it to hang clothes, have shelves and baskets for socks, pjs, etc. no need for a dresser. Saves space. As a minimalist, this apartment would work for me, great price, too! 😃👍

Okay ... Not bad. Not bad at all for $1380/month and rent stabilized! I could work with it except.. 40 minutes to get into Manhattan proper? Hmm... and ya know ... I could work with that too given its affordability. I think we're reaching the point of where people must move farther out to find affordable housing/living and while I do LOVE NYC, I could learn to love it from afar and enjoy an affordable neighborhood/community that doesn't stress me out due to rent costs and other expenses.

@@dianem1952 A 40 minute commute is reminiscent of my time of owning my house in NJ but commuting/working in NYC. Therefore for me, it would not be the same type of feel and convenience as directly living and working in NYC--more specifically, Manhattan proper.

@@MamaCarola1You'd be surprised at how many people don't know NYC consists of *5 boroughs* . Edit 😄 Last night my life long native Brooklynite friend referred to Manhattan as "the City"!

That is a long way from Manhattan. If your job is in Brooklyn, you may rarely go to Manhattan. That's okay, if that is what you want. You might also want to get a car. Also, hope you have a pleasant landlord in an older building like that. It a pretty looking building from the outside. But on the plus side it seems to be a much nicer studio than the "cheap" studios in Manhattan. And a neighborhood "quiet with stuff" is also nice.

It was truly pleasant. It has the elevator many just need and so many things like not being squished at all bathroom spot needs, an elder could be assisted a little at that tub for instance... and a real kitchen alcove. In fact entry and bath and kitchen all have the alcove thing which is major room for creative storing helps, and not taking space in your precious one room....it is just fabulous..wonderful....and for once doable for full time singles on budgets to get savings going there or for those with good enough fixed incomes who would like to have a little to live beyond rent.
