I like to think that the "Spiky biome" was a starting point for the dev to make the Gargantuan Leviathan. We know that only a small portion of the skeletal remains are visible in the Lost River, and it would make sense for a creature that large to leave more than just it's skull and very upper spine visible from its remains. Perhaps this was meant to be it's ribs, like in the Rotten Vale in Monster Hunter World, which is just a huge area of rot and decay which was created when another Super Large Leviathan Elder Dragon died and its remains eventually created the Rotten Vale.

So interesting to see that the lost river potentially wasnt an area and that the lava zone was potentially meant to be bigger and more open. While it will probably take you a few episodes to get to, once you get to the Jan-2017 build (43604), make sure to check out what would become the Lava Lakes zone. When I was playing the game at that time, I accidentally clipped through the ground from the Safe Shallows. Since I was in my prawn suit, I just sorta just let myself fall for a bit until I saw something and was able to grapple back in-bounds. I don't know the exact coordinates, but the depth was 1458m; I appeared on a small shelf, and in front of me there appeared to be small rocks arranged into an arrow right off the edge. It seemed to be pointing down, and I tried to follow it at the time, but it just went to a sandy bottom. There might be similar things in the area, but I didn't check because the Sea Dragon or something destroyed my PRAWN and I had to seaglide my way to the surface.

But that big ol lava lake down there, there were just some straight up empty pits inside that appeared to go straight down into the void. man i remember this point in the games development idk what update you could but you could spawn the sea emperor in . they were much smaller and had no animations. there was also i believe the starts of the sea emperors containment being added away back when it was just a deep hole in the lava zone. there used to be a command to go there. the old way open lava zone used to freak people out ,because of the emptiness , to the point of them getting lost in the vast nothing.

Wow i remember combing through old versions of the game trying to find that unfinished lava zone. Thank you for finding it as it was a memorable experience for me stumbling across it for the first time. Back in 2015 when i was playing survival i was using my new Cyclops to explore the grand reef, I remember being in awe of how otherworldly the biome was and for me i was like 16 and most things about the game were EXTREMELY unknown to me. As i was exploring with my Cyclops I just kept slowly going deeper until i found a huge cave opining that felt extremely out of place. When i came up on it i recalled how the entrance was truly massive for where it was in the biome. I thought it was a further extension of the biome or even a giant arch so i slowly went inside, not realizing how alien it was until the sea color changed. The flood lights of the sub just made it harder to see so i turned them off, then slowly as the game light adjusted i realized how unnatural the place was. Bulbous black rock everywhere devoid of color, only visible through the outline it made against the red stained water. I pressed on slowly, unsure of my surroundings and my feelings. The only feeling i was sure about; was that i do not belong here. I creeped on for what felt like an hour, slowly weaving my way through knocking against the basalt until at one point i became utterly lost. Unable to escape my predicament the only way to go was down, depleted of power i entered my seamoth abandoning my mother sub and found the most unsettling location i had ever seen in a game. What i now know as the backrooms, as i sped towards the bottom of the cave the round voxels suddenly giving away to 90* angles, cubes, and large void spaces. I was very much horrified and panicked. Panicking back and nearly loosing myself in an area i was never meant to see i find my way back to the unfinished lava zone to find a dead lava castle before me. At the time i was so freaked out by the experience i abandoned the play through and put the game down for a good chunk of time, not really playing seriously until it was 90% complete. While i think the new Subnautica is a far better game the older versions are far more empty and give a much better feeling of isolation and at times terror.

I've never played early access Subnautica (console player) but the hellhole leading into the early Lava Zone have been a favorite thing for me to learn about. Then you found the second one shown in the video. Anyway, I read on the Subnautica wiki that there were three entrances to the Lava Zone, two of which, if I'm not mistaken, are the previously mentioned hellholes. One in the Crash Zone (the first hellhole you talked about) and the second in the Deep Grand Reef. The third was located in the Dunes. I don't know any more information at the time, but I just thought it would be worth mentioning the Dunes entrance.

The purpose behind the fragment analyzer was to unlock blueprints back in the day. Back then, the scanner didn't exist, and fragments were items you could pick up, rather than what they are now. How it would work is that you would find the fragments in the world, take them and put them into the fragment analyzer, then wait a certain amount of time (I forgot how long, but I think it was like 5 minutes) and that was how you would unlock blueprints. I'm glad they removed it though, the old process sounds really tedious.

I believe in the final game it also has a geothermal vent inside it. I remember building a base in the backrooms a little after the game had fully released. I used my prawn suit to get down there, and, after realizing I didn’t bring enough materials, got too freaked out and used the glitch to use the repair tool while inside vehicles to get my prawn suit to the 8192 meter depth limit and went back to the surface. I never went down there again. Now I have fears that size reference will be waiting if I go there again lol

Fun fact the entrance seen for the aurora is still there currently but takes way more effort to go to and doesnt lead to the engine bay

You need to clip through now :) It's no longer normally accessible.

My earliest Subnautica screenshot was March 2016. Watched some Markiplier videos of it before I bought it myself, was hyped for the finished game. I have a video messing around with some console commands back then, when the game had weird things like a specimen analyzer and terrain modification. Put a reaper in dirt jail.

Off Topic: I just find how fascinating it is that Human Society could be so connected and isolated at the same time, not to mention that different values, beliefs, religions, music, different music genres, literature, movies, and let alone games evolves so many mini communities within one huge society on Earth, to the point everyone is an alien to everyone else despite living on the same planet. TLDR: I find it fascinating how our society could be so diverse and yet so isolated with so many ideas and communities that can be so alien to other ideas/communities.

Yeah you’re absolutely right :) It’s a strange time in human history.

2:33 I have two theories for this biome, as I have with other biomes, it could be the thermal spike biome, from below zero, since we know a lot of below zero biomes were scrapped and put into that game, or it could be that one biome with the singular cell organism. its probably the former, and not the latter because : It would've been really hard to code. Make sure to see if its possible to hit F2, or whatever the biome panel is again.
@TheLastBacon10 ай бұрын
I love the idea of the single-cell biome :)

1:22 actually it was still survival accessable by this point, the reason you don't see it is because now it requires you to analyze (a) fragment(s)

Man the texture of the floaging islands, it takes me back so much damn. I remember olaying Subnautica on my shitty Laptop and useing the Teraformer ti make a Tunnel from the lifepod to the lavazone. The old texture if those stones haunts me, I always hated it haha

2:30 I believe these spikes were an early biome concept that, after being scrapped before retail release, were repurposed into the Thermal Spires found in BZ. Can't recall where I read that, tho...

very nice, Im glad we didnt keep that many reapers, it wouldve made it more annoying than scary. having one reaper there and there is scarier also because you do feel like they are predator way more, they dont step over each others territory as much and you get to dread that sound you hear somewhere, just reminding you youre the pray there.
