Well done, Paul. Thank goodness you are working your way through this car from one end to the other. What this process, and this video in particular, also highlights are the less obvious ageing components which ought to be changed as a matter of prudent maintenance. We all know that rubber hoses perish with age, and fuel hoses can suffer when exposed to modern ethanol-based fuels. I hope you are going to weather-protect the new components and fixings. Great content!
@daviddaw999Ай бұрын
Just be grateful that you decided to change the fuel filter and noticed the leak. The condition of rubber and plastic parts is a real problem on older modern cars. I have a 1990 Mercedes S124 and a lot of plastic parts are really fragile. The heat cycles they go through render them brittle and clips fail all the time. Really old cars, such as your friend's Rolls-Royce have no plastic parts to break.

@peterriggall84093 ай бұрын
Good to spot that early Paul. I would have thought that a fuel hose would be the last thing to attract a mouse/rat. Normally they go for electrical leads which would smell better. If that had been the case, hopefully you would have noticed it by now. It might be a blessing in disguise as now you have got rid of any water/muck in the tank. I think you would be right about that being the original fuel filter….poor old girl. I can see the smile on its face and it is very happy to be rescued and in your warm garage. 😊

I was thinking the same and was wondering if it was squirrel damage, judging by the size and shape of the teeth marks, which are similar to those that have been inflicted in our plastic bird feeders.

Bullet dodged there! Glad you spotted it. These cars were undersealed from the factory. I have the build sheets for my Turbo R, it's recorded as being done with Tectyl 506. That was in late 1995, I imagine it would be the same for yours. You can apply to the RREC to get the build sheets if you're curious, it's a lot of information, mine's 79 pages!

Hi Paul, nice work catching that in time!. In the US an issue we have with older cars is the impact of the ethanol that is in the petrol today, which degrades the rubber fuel lines that were used at the time. I have several older cars, and I’ve had fuel lines fail because of the ethanol attacking the “vintage” rubber fuel lines. These crack and then start leaking. I’m not sure what the ethanol content of the petrol is in the UK, was wondering if the new fuel line that you were supplied met the modern standards for E5,E10, and other modern ethanol petrol blends.

I have a mercedes w126 s class, it was smelling of fuel every time I started her up, past few months. Then I noticed dark stains on the road in front of the driveway....I assumed it was a truck that leaked oil,,...........until last week I started the car and my dog was barking at the car standing next to it, which she never did before.........I thought a cat was under it........I knelt down, shock horror the fuel was leaking like a hose spray from the fuel hoses near the fuel pump......omg! This could have gone down south disarterly.......! I changed the hose, it was perished being 35 years old. Phew lucky escape. Thank you k9 friend.

A nasty thing to happen but at least that hose let go in the relative safety of your ventilated garage. It would have been a nightmare if it had suddenly starting dripping fuel all over the road, which you would then have had to clean up somehow.

i've always been told these things happen for a reason and this potentially saved burning the car down that is the problem with older cars fuel lines get brittle or get chewed up that's why you should always do an inspection of every part of the fuel line especially if it's been standing around

I was just wondering if you’ve had any experience in removing the unit from a jag in the past? Only the garage is telling me they need to remove the bumper And pull it out front ways rather than from underneath all the best peter

Life on cars; Does Intro car supply parts outside the UK? They seem to have good quality parts for your Rolls Royce. I grew up on British and American automobiles in Canada in the 70's. So I'd be interested in finding out if they supply parts in Canada. British automobile parts can be a challenge to obtain in Canada as the majority of them are sourced from the US.
