I found a gorgeous 1920's McDougall Hoosier on the side of the road for FREE! These hoosiers were used in the late 1800's early 1900's as extra kitchen storage and prep space. They sell for $2,000. Today I am giving this beautiful hoosier a modern twist!

You got a gem. Growing up, we had a Hoosier in our kitchen. Because we were poor, ours was made of some sort of cheaper wood and was white with decals on the doors. We had the flour bin/sifter on one side of the top part and cabinets on the other. When my mother could no longer take care of our home, she gave the Hoosier to me. I took it to a restoration shop and they did a wonderful job. I still had the flour bin/sifter and my porcelain top still pulled out for doing things on it. Making cookies and rolling pie dough was so easy on it because the porcelain tended to keep a cool temp. I am 76 now so my son has had the Hoosier for about 12 years now and he has it sitting in their dining room. Mine was white as it always was white. I even had the little porcelain pans with the glass lids that were for storing things in. Enjoy it, you did such a nice job fixing it up and it is worth some money. Good job.

For the grinder add some felt pads to the two parts that touch the worktop to prevent damage. A cocktail cabinet come sideboard for the dining table is a great idea. Pull out bottle shelves added to the bottom cupboard (modern kitchen fitting) would maximise accessibility. My best friends mum had a mid century hoosier in the 60s. Gave her all the essential storage and workspace she needed to cook from scratch. Modern kitchens make us walk and clean a lot more than we need to.

Yes, you're right, the bottom drawer is for the bread. It should be lined with tin, too, and have sliders for that top piece. The bottom cabinet part, usually, had a shelf with wire baskets in it to hold root vegetables...and there was, typically, a rack on the back of that cabinet door for jars, etc. I have one that still has the flour sifter in it. I have my big mixing bowl sitting right under it. It's very handy if you bake your own bread, which they did in those days. Well, you've seen images of those Hoosier Cabinets. So, you know exactly how they were set up and understand how they were used. I'm so glad you restored it and kept it in original condition. It's not only a valuable piece of history, it's beautiful, as well. Lovely. 💕

If you didn't already know, the metal drawer with metal cover was designed to be mouse-proof. Mice were a problem in older homes back then, and the smell of fresh bread lured them to the Hoosier.

Actually those cast iron meat grinders had multitude of interchangeable parts and attachments, they were like the Kitchen aid of their time. My mum inherited one from her grandmother and is still in full working order. She not only uses it to make sausages and mince, but also to process vegetables and fruit for jams and various preserves. Additionally it has attachments to make variety of pressed biscuits desighns. 🥰 the large sifter on the wall is actually moilin and is used to process fruit and soft vegetables in to puree and paste.

I can’t believe you found this for free! I paid $120 for mine in 2005. I repainted mine cream on the outside & pale green within. The bottom right side drawer was usually lined with tin for raising loaves of bread. I have considered having my porcelain top powder-coated to restore it. Have used in my apartment kitchen years ago and in my art studio (it’s favorite spot). Now in storage and I miss it!

What a lucky find!!! Hoosiers were usually made with assorted woods of varying hues, so they were usually painted to make uniformity. To find one which was never painted is sort of rare, so I'm really glad you didn't alter it. I also have one which was never painted. It was in pretty sad shape, but my son restored it. The flourbin/sifter is missing, however, as is the lid for the bread keeper. As my kitchen is very small, I use it for necessary storage.

I got one that was painted white, so I spent a summer stripping it (later I saw several 1920's ads where the Hoosier was white, so maybe it was white originally). Also, I added legs and wheels to the bottom, as mine were missing. There are good supply companies online for Hoosiers. Now it's in my 1910 house kitchen, and a microwave fits into the open niche where you have the dishes displayed, a great way to 'hide' that essential kitchen appliance!

That is the lid to the bread box which is the bottom drawer. I have a Hoosier that I've used for 40+ years and I love it. I stripped it down, sanded the wood smooth, rebuilt the roll top, restained it in light oak and repainted the inside white. The bottom cupboard where your Pyrex is has a shelf and the bottom has a slide out that is useful to reach the back. I found a spice rack with milk glass jars, and I still had a lot of my mother's old stuff...sifter, meat grinder or nut grinder, juicer like the one you looked at and more. My youngest son has already dibs it when I don't need it and longer! Yours is beautiful and like you, I didn't want to paint it. I have the glass for the doors, but need to make new ones as the old got warped in someones' back yard! Enjoy and it really does work well in a kitchen and becomes a center for many tasks. Mine has.

I’m drooling over your Hoosier cabinet. Can’t believe someone just put it out to the side of the road. You definitely found a beautiful antique. I’ve always wanted one but they are costly. It’s to bad that the flour canister wasn’t attached but your idea of putting shelves in is good idea. Yes, the bottom drawer was for the bread. I’m thrilled that you didn’t paint it. If you had you would of lost a lot of money in the future if you do decide to sell it. I haven’t seen one with the glass up top so that’s kinda special. You did a beautiful job at decorating it n that wall paper is so pretty on it, good choice n good it’s a peel n stick too. Enjoy it tremendously. You’ve a true treasure. ♥️😊👍👍👍

My grandmother's Hoosier had a flour bin that tilted out on the bottom left side of the piece, one of the small drawers on the top piece held her salt. The bottom right drawer was used to hold bread dough while it was rising. Your meat grinder is missing the back plate that fits around the shaft of the "Grinder wheel". My grandmother had several different Plates that fit the front of the grinder and they were different sizes, to determine the size of the "Grind". Also a warning: If you try to grind anything with moisture content, including chunks of meat, the grinder will leak the liquid out the back near the handle, so if you use it for that kind of thing, be aware of the leakage and make sure that you have a bowl or bucket to catch it, or it ends up on the floor and is quite messy! Good job keeping it natural and frankly something that old and valuable is best used for display/decoration. Thanks for sharing your Treasure Find with us!

I restored Hoosiers years ago, and you can order the side brackets to mount on the sides of the bottom to secure the top to, then you can slide the tin piece out for extra work space. So glade you didn't paint it, even though they were often originally painted in cream yellow or light green. En And yes, the tin lid goes on the bottom drawer for bread.. Enjoy your wonderful piece.

Inmy childhood I saw a lot of old Hoosier cabinets with the flower sifter etc. If I knew then what I knew now as to how popular they would be for nostalgia buffs..... My grandmother used her meat grinder for making things like sausage, canning minced meat, and making ham salad for sandwiches. I found and bought an old grinder at a junk store and keep saying I'm going to make ham salad just like grama did. LOL Good job, and I'm glad this free piece was in good enough condition to keep natural.

Bread board is still in it and the bread box cover goes in the bottom drawer. Mine is intact. If you send me an email address, I will send you photos. Watching this video brought back a flood of memories of growing up on a farm and my mother using her Hoosier just as you describe. Using the Steele wool works well when I'm looking to get the dirt off I use the S.O.S. scribbles the soap in them is very mild and serves it's purpose! You found a beautiful cabnet!

You did a lovely job. I have a hoosier also and LOVE it! A little wider than yours as I have the flour bin/sifter on one side and cabinets on the other. Yes, my bottom drawer is lined w/ tin. What an awesome "find" and you did it up well! Good job! How fortunate for your kitchen!! (the second item that you called a sifter that was hanging on the wall in the antique store is actually a Foley Food Mill, used for pulverizing/mashing fruits i.e. apples when making applesauce and such).

That is such an amazing find!! I'm so glad it found you and you repurposed it to make it look like it did in its glory days.. That meat grinder took me back like 5 decade's.. I use to watch my dad grind up the meat from an animal that was butchered or hunted.. Thank you for this share, it made me happy.. 😄

I, like Joyce below, have a white Hoosier style cupboard. I bought it for $75, which was very exciting. In complete ones I have seen there is a metal rack that goes in the bottom left compartment on yours, and there were also wire racks that hooked inside some of the upper doors and they held glass jars for spices and such. So glad you did not paint it, it cleaned up so nice.

If you haven’t found it yet contact Kennedy hardware they are super nice and will help you figure out which one you need. Thanks for not painting it. It’s hard to find one in such nice condition that hasn’t been painted. My suggestion if you get the urge to paint is sell this one and buy one that’s already painted, even if you decide to repaint it you aren’t “ruining” a beautiful solid oak oak cabinet. I’m a firm believer in, it’s yours, paint it if you want but the unpainted ones are getting rarer and rarer.

When showing the handheld sifter at the booth, you pointed to another item on the wall referring to that as a sifter. That is actually a food mill if I'm not mistaken. You would use that when canning. Similar usage, but meant for different ingredients. Just a small tidbit

Im sure you figured out by now that the enamel top is reversible - you can put the damage to the back. Also, some Hoosiers came with a meat grinder attachment that goes on the side of the bottom cabinet. It's a wood block on a bracket that you attach the meat grinder to.

We had a meat grinder and corn grinder because we had chickens. I grew up on a farm. My dad grew everything. He went to the store only for the basics like flour, corn meal, sugar, rice grits and bread. I love it, did great job on it.

The loose cover piece at the end of your video looks like a flour drawer cover. You would pull the flour drawer out and slide the cover open. The cover helped keep the flour fresh.

Love it! What a great find! I definitely would have been tempted to paint it. Beer cart or coffee bar would be fun for sure. I liked the suggestion of a mini fridge. But I love it just as it is. Nice job. 😊
