@@Τοπαλικάριτουκάμπου It depends on what era you mean. In the United States at least, in the 17th or 18th century, paper was very expensive, so people used very small sheets. What many people don't know is that in the 19th century, a lot of girls and young women were encouraged to write diaries to improve their penmanship and for self-examination. It's true what you say about how few survived due to age and materials. Also, some people didn't think they were "important," so it's possible many were burned (a common practice then of getting rid of paper) or thrown away.

I thought it was interesting to see the language is pretty 'normal'. In Victorian books or films on the era, people always talk so eloquently. Which can be a joy to read/hear, but it sounds so surreal. I always wondered if the upper class really spoke like that. Seems like they didn't always do.

I am sure she would have never thought what she wrote would be seen and shared. Awesome. I have an 1858 diary from a guy in MN before and after it became a State. I struggled with the old cursive writing in my videos also. Have you researched her and found out more about her life?
@Julia-cb8wm5 жыл бұрын
Not to be “that gal” but you should be wearing gloves when handling this. The paper is very delicate and the leather cracked a lot. The oils on your fingers will increase the deterioration of the diary. If you don’t have any intention on preserving this than whatever but if you want to keep this intact for a while to show your future children or whomever then wear gloves to keep it in good shape.

@groovypullet23375 жыл бұрын
This is actually not true. It's a common misconception that people should wear gloves when handling old paper or parchment. It's true that when handling many old objects you should preferably wear nitrile (non reactive) gloves, but it's discouraged with books. Parchment actually benefits from oils in hands because it's made of leather, while paper, which may get stained or damaged, is generally ok as long as you make sure hands are clean and dry when handling it. Gloves are discouraged, because the lack of feeling in your fingers makes you much more likely to drop or tear paper. So just wash your hands and be careful. More important for long term preservation is storage. Depending on the type of paper you should keep it in conservation grade packing and in the dark 🙂 Source: I work in a museum.
@brittniep92195 жыл бұрын
That’s actually entirely wrong. You should have clean and dry hands, gloves can lead you to harming books more by lack of texture on the skin. Edit: saw above much more detailed comment haha I’m a book collector and so do a fair amount of research on the topic but I do not work in a museum.

It looks to be she may have rewrote it and then there were alot of X's and checkmarks through the pages which looked like she planned to rewrite it again as a final draft so this could have been the 2nd draft.

@@jessicavill How do you know for sure this diary is from 1895? I'm very skeptical because from the inside the pages and writing look so fresh and neat, like it had just been written. I'm not accusing you, just maybe someone else. It's just so hard to believe that after 124 years that the pages and writing (especially when done in pencil) wouldn't appear more worn or messy after all this time has passed.

That’s probably more interesting than reading a biography

Real question is: How did you find the book?

It's wonderful reading things from other people's lives. This kind of item is fascinating! I have been keeping a daily diary since 2017 and I love writing one! I did find it amusing (I don't mean in a cruel way) that it is the oldest item you've seen [can't remember if they were your exact words], I live in the UK and not far from me there are 2 castles both built in the 12th century and a church in the town I live in from 14th century, so the 19th century isn't really that old in comparison! Glad you shared this video!

I’m sorry but shouldn’t the pages be yellowed by now or basically brown? You should get this authenticated

Idk! I have a kids book from like 1901 from my great grandparents and its barely yellowed as well so its hard to tell 🤷♀️

Such a cool video! I love all things vintage and old. The only thing that bothered me a little bit was the fact that the writer apparently sat next to the Duchess of Dino which doesn't really make sense because the Duchess had already died in 1862. So I was a bit confused. But all in all I love videos like this and I love your channel 😊
@jessicavill5 жыл бұрын
bahahah same. i didnt know whether to mention that flaw because I dont know if she was talking in past tense, if she meant that the duchess sat at the same table once, if she is talking about someone else and I got the name wrong, or if shes straight up lying LOL Perhaps once I decode more, we can see whats up with that!

The duchess of Dino died, as you said, in 1862 but her son, who was the 3rd Duke of Dino married in 1839 and his wife would have inherited the title. I'm not sure but his mother would then have been called the dowager dutchess, in English at any rate. The new dutchess of Dino did not die until1891 so could well have been seated near Marianne.

I loved seeing my name on the first page, it’s not too common anymore so seeing it in the Diary was really cool💕. The best thing I’ve ever found was a love letter written from a man to a woman, undated, stuffed into an astrology book on my mom’s shelf. It wasn’t addressed to anyone in the family, so it must’ve been written and hidden before she owned it sometime in the 70’s. It was so sweet it almost felt wrong to read 😂
