Steve, good advice but I'll add one more. If the bar oil is real thick and you don't want to waste it, you can thin it out with a little diesel fuel. I've done this quite a few times in my lifetime. Especially during the cold Winter months. It doesn't take much to mix it thinner. Of all the years I've done this, I've never had any premature wear on the bar or the chain. Diesel fuel is oily. For those worried about sparks and fires, diesel has a higher flashpoint thus harder to ignite.

living in a subtropical climate, where we put a jumper on when it drops to 20 degrees (about 70 bananas for you yanks), we just have "bar oil" on the shop shelf, no other grade (at least not easily determined from a look at the shelf full of bar oil ). But my little husqvarna could benefit from a higher oil flow, Ive never burnt up a bar or chain, but I'd still like it wetter!

You could try adding a bit of low viscosity oil to your bar oil to thin it out some . I was using GW Supatak but last time I bought a 4 litre pack I happened to buy Castrol , it seems thinner by comparison.

Great video Steve. Where abouts on the island are you? I'm in beautiful downtown Port Alberni. Where do you see small engine repair in the next few years? With the push towards electrics and the fact that a lot of the manufacturers seem to want to go the way of John Deere, do you see independent small engine repair becoming more of a hobby and less of a business?

What a lot of people don't understand is that not all bar oil is created equal. The higher viscosity oils are meant for hotter temperatures (i.e: summer) and the lower viscosity oils are for cooler/colder temperatures (i.e.: late fall, winter).
@manomoa
@manomoa 7 ай бұрын
Because you're an expert on what we the people understand and don't understand. All I can say is good luck finding a different viscosity bar oil in Sydney. When you find it be sure to let all us stupid people know.
@blackenedmagic888
@blackenedmagic888 7 ай бұрын
@@manomoa You assume much - as in that I think everyone is stupid. Not so. Looking back at my original post, maybe I should have worded it different so as to not come across as being condescending. That said, I have operated chainsaws and other two-stroke equipment for approximately forty years now, so I do have a fair amount of knowledge about them - whether or not you believe it is up to you. Anyhow, is it safe to assume the Sydney you live in is the one in Australia and not the one in Nova Scotia, Canada? If my assumption is correct, then chances are the only bar oil you would be able to find there would have a similar viscosity to what we would call "spring/summer" bar oil here in Canada. I could be wrong, but I imagine it'd be rare for you to see temperatures less than 5℃, so I doubt there'd be much need for different viscosity bar oils.
@manomoa
@manomoa 7 ай бұрын
@@blackenedmagic888 uhuh and I have for 45 or more years both in NZ and Australia. Whilst you're right about temps in certain parts of Sydney it definitely gets colder than that in NZ and I still don't recall ever coming across different viscosity bar oil. Maybe they are there but I have never seen them in all those years. Personally I think they should bring back the primer as an option as opposed to adjusting the feed.

As someone who owns this chainsaw but hasn't tried a bunch of bar oils to know the differences between their viscosities - Any chance you'd be willing to share the brand you use? I've been using the name brand stuff but that is going to be costly in the long run. As a note - I did try the plant based stuff from Stihl and I won't be doing that again. I let it sit over the winter and it ended up attracting some vermin who decided to take up a home inside my chainsaw! Cheers!

My really old Stihl hadn't seen much use in recent years and wouldn't oil properly. After cleaning and a new spur gear it was better but not great. Lighter oil wasn't the answer either and ultimately found gunk (years of`oxidation, I suppose as there was no sawdust, chips, or other solids) in the bottom of the oil reservoir. A quick washout with mineral spirits and fresh oil did the trick. A case of not enough use causing issues.

Many possibilities. Check compression, low compression equals hard to start. New plug gapped properly. Check/ replace all fuel and impulse lines and primer bulb. Finally could be infamous Stihl crank seals.

Quick question. We carry Stihl saws on our fire trucks. I was told today that it is not good practice to start the saws every morning during our check off of our tools. We should only check and start them once a week, and they should not idle longer than 1 minute. Is this good advice? It’s important our saws run and work every day.

Thanks Steve! I have a husqy 350 that really doesn't like to oil. I've checked the pump (fine),, pipes, tank, filter etc, washed it all out paraffin etc etc. Get a decent amount of oil pumping through the hole that matches up to the one on the bar (yes, cleaned that also), the holes seem to line up (and I countersunk the bar one a little in case it they didn't), Yet I don't get oil on chain! I've never been able to work it out :( I'll try the thinner bar oil idea and see if that works. I'll probably mix the only bar oil i have with something thin (ATF probably) just to test it out, I doubt it'll burn the bar up while testing, and any oil would be better than no oil! Any other ideas would be welcomed though. In emergencies I've run it with nothing more than a good chain soaking from an oil can every cut or two!

My brand new ms 250 I fill the bar oil up and it leaks out so bad. The oil cap has been replaced 3 times. Once by me and the rest by the dealer. When I got to the dealer and they said it was the oil cap but they put in a dye to see where it was leaking and as I picked up the saw their counter was a big mess of oil and so I think maybe the tank has a crack in it. I started arguing with them and they just walked away. All that did was piss me off. Brought the saw home and poured the oil out. So whenever I decide to run I can fill it up and when finished drain it back out! Never buying anything from them again!
