I have known this even when I was very young. I am a 4th generation Portuguese-Spanish Filipino . Both grandparents came from Northern Portugal and spain in 1860. I speak straight Portuguese and Spanish. I go to Portugal every year and visited all over the country, my fave is Porto especially Matosinhos. I love the fact that Malaysia keep this as part of their cultural identity. Muito obrigado pelo vídeo!

In Goa today people choose to hide any Portuguese ancestry as the RSS that rules India has deemed anyone of mixed blood as "not being pure". Very much like the Germans did in preWWll Germany. Even the descendant of Vasco De Gama that runs a restaurant in Goa prefers to very quiet about her ancestry. All of her siblings left for Portugal after 1961 and never returned to Goa. They all feared persecution.

I think its not 4th generation but 14th generation of Portuguese descendants as Portuguese came to Malacca back in year 1511, more than 500 years ago, so 14th generation is make more sense. Portuguese came to Melaka back then for 3 missions; Gold, Glory and Gospel so their men married locals and converted them to Catholic, but not so much Dutch and British later. Similar happened to Dutch in Indonesia or Spain in the Philippines, they married locals. Since mostly Malays already embraced Islam during Sultanate of Malacca Empire, so most Portuguese married Indians and Chineses at that time. They are not Malays, but they hold status of Bumiputra (son of soil) similar to Malays, Orang Asli (indigenous people in Malaysia) and indigenous people in Borneo; Sabah and Sarawak. Most Kristang since then intermarried with other Christian communities in Malaysia; Chineses, Indians or people from Borneo or even foreigners. Only small minorities of them converted to Islam and married Malays. So most Malaysians sometimes confused them with Malay-Muslims due to mixed blood.

@@Mcanonhmos the bumi status was offered to the baba nyonya community but they declined it. yes, they roots back to Cheng Ho's visit I believe. because he belonged to the palace, he brought hundreds of people together with him and they settled in Bukit Cina. the founding of Malacca was way before he came. I mean, an emperor of a huge dynasty couldn't just randomly sent his admiral to a small newly founded state, right? so Malacca must have been doing well for many years prior to that. but Malacca was not small when he came. it was already a kingdom.

@@Mcanonhmos Baba and Nyonya used to have status as Bumiputra during British colonial due to their uniqueness, and closer to Malay rather than Chinese. However after independence and a few generation, most of them loss their traditions and intermarried with non-Baba Nyonya which lead new generations are more Chineses. They still fighting to get their Bumi status back, same goes to Chitty (Peranakan Indians) and Malaysian Siameses in northern parts of Malaysia; Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis. However, some Baba and Nyonya, Chitty, Siamese or even Indian Muslims (Mamak) married to Malay, their children can get Bumi status and known as Malay.

Maybe a bit of a correction here. Malay is an ethnic group. Kristang is a different ethnic group. So for them, they are not Malay, but decedents of Portuguese settlers in Melaka. So Malay-Portuguese is not entirely correct term to use to refer to them. (unless of course they are actually married to an ethnic Malays, but that's a different story). You can say they are Malaysians (as a nationality) but definitely not Malay in that sense. Additionally why the lady mentions that they are the 4th generation there, is because the location is quite new. Kristangs themselves are not new to Malaysia and spans back generations. But as you say, the location is gazetted as a Kristang area in the 1930s, i would guess the family has been staying there since then.

@@MdmChong惊人的 my guess is that after Melaka was free from Portuguese rule, not many Portuguese from Portugal, came around to settle there. (Also the Dutch and English that came after might not be so welcoming to Portuguese nationals? They were opposing trading powers at the time anyway) So intermarriages between locals and Portuguese descendents are more likely to happen. So eventually you get how it is today. That's just my personal theory and have no literature basis on it. So yeah..

@@MdmChong惊人的 hi. I grew up all my life in Melaka. And I attended a high school, not far from the Portuguese settlement. To my understanding (since the portuguese era is 500 years ago), local Malays girls were forced into marriage to the Portuguese soldiers, seamen, officers - leaving their family and religion behind. And in the past 200-300 years the portuguese were known to be fishermen in Melaka. This is different to the generations today after they receiving proper education from the governmen - there are doctors, engineers, lecturers etc. This is reason the skin colour is similar to the Malays as well as the pyhsical body size (small unlike normal european). They stay strong to the religion, language and culture though.

@@MdmChong惊人的the Portuguese are not exactly fair skin like the British or Germans. They are Mediterranean peoples. They are like southern Italians who were not considered White when they emigrated to America. There was a lot of racism against them in America as immigrants. Some Portuguese also have blood from the Moors that conquered Portugal. In Goa they have many old paintings of pure Portuguese men of the Church and they have dark skin and curly hair. For a while Europe was even debating whether to call the Portuguese Europeans as they were quite dark skinned compared to most Europeans.

They are called gragok in the streets and they speak "kristang" , they're also known as Eurasians.. I myself am Eurasian , Muslim however but have relatives who are catholic .. were from Singapore. Most gragok Eurasians , primarily Dutch, Portuguese or both have Malay in their blood , hence the darker skin tone or features ... Those who don't know about eurasians , often mistake them as Malay or Filipino .. some have lighter skin tone and those maybe have a closer or new Caucasian ancestor in their genes not too far away.. maybe just a generation away .. like for example their Eurasian mother marry a British man .. one thing is for certain .. most eurasians are proud , and don't like to be associated with Malays .. some kind of arrogance .. not all of them but somehow in them they have this pride . Haha . They confuse Islam and Malay also .. oh well .. to me race is just a race .. nothing special . Good content anyway ! Keep it up

The Melakan Portuguese speak Kristang (16th century language). Even the modern-day portuguese (in portugal) can’t understand them. Portuguese soldiers & kapitan intermarried locals to spread the catholic sect. At that time, Melaka already multi-ethnic kingdom. Most of their wifes were non-muslim. Some muslim women such as the slaves, maids, artisan & farmers also force to leave their religion to get married. Life is very hard for local women during the occupation.

the portuguese descendants r not malay.. there might hv some of their great great grandfathers married a malay.. bt that was during the early part of portuguese occupation here.. as majority of malays was already a muslim when the portuguese came.. not many married the portuguese settlers.. that’s where the inter marriage with other races eg chinese or indians frm goa came.. malay is one of the several races that can b found in malaysia… it’s the biggest race in malaysia.. a malaysian who’s a portuguese descent is known as eurasian malaysian… same like a chinese who’s nationality is malaysian.. known as malaysian chinese… a malay whose nationality is malaysian.. is known as malaysian malay.. u can find malays in singapore… indonesia… southern thailand.. some parts of philippines.. cambodia.. cocos island.. etc.. bahasa malaysia aka bahasa melayu aka malay language is the national language of malaysia… so an eurasian learn to speak bahasa malaysia n english at school.. while their mother tongue i.e kristang they learn at home.. n not like mandarin or tamil (one of the indians dialect)… these two hv their own national schools that use mandarin or tamil as the main language.. these schools are known as national type chinese or national type tamil school aka vernacular schools… malaysia is the only country that still hv these types of schools… there’s pros n cons to this system.. bt the bright side of it these two languages r able to b preserved by the communities…

yes. it is bad to be of mixed blood in India. The RSS has said mixed blood are "unpure". It is an Indo-Aryan view as they believe they are descendants of the Aryan peoples. People in Goa hide their Portuguese ancestry after India took over and even started a few decades before that. It is very hush hush unless they lived out of India. Even the direct descendant of Vasco De Gama runs a restaurant in Goa but is nervous about saying she is related to her Portuguese heritage. She tries to be as much Indian as possible. The RSS of India have been trying to wipe away anything Portuguese. The Chief Minister said that statement again last year and it makes us Christians very worried. The RSS walked in the city with hammers in hand and broke all the beautiful antique azulejo tile work for the street signs. The PM of india's government has said that they wanted to hold a "homecoming" for all Christians to convert back to Hindu. So it is very complicated. The Bajrang dal also have gone into Christian neighborhoods like just last year, thousands of Hindu men from all over India chanting like warriors, to demonstrate who is in charge in India. Just a lot of HATE in India. They always talk about the British being bad and racist and then you have to see what goes on in India with caste and the untouchables-called Dalits today.

It is strange, in Goa - India, the policy of the Indian government is remove everything Portuguese from Goa even since India took over in 1961. We are taught to hate the Portuguese as the focus has been on the conversion of mainly Hindus to Christianity. The Indian government with the RSS took down a lot of Portuguese structures trying to wipe away anything Portuguese. In Panjim, the capital city, the RSS walked thru the streets breaking all the beautiful azulejos tile work for the street names. The government of the current PM has spoken of a "homecoming" for Christians to convert to Hinduism. The RSS also is demanding some sites that have churches need to be demolished as they were Hindu temples on them. A lot of harassment of Christians that gets worse every year. Most Christians are choosing to move to Christian countries overseas. When a recreation of Vasco de Gama's 500 year anniversary of his initial voyage was planned, the ship from Portugal was received by all former colonies except Goa. The Indian government refused entry into Goa. However they were allowed in International waters off the coast of Goa. We the people of Goa have moved on and not harbored hatred for the Portuguese and so the locals got on boats and went out the ship throwing flower garlands in peace. The Portuguese also did a lot of good that we are grateful for. The current PM of India also has said that anyone saying "Viva Portugal" when Portugal is playing in World Cup Soccer will be arrested and jailed. Last year his Chief Minister of Goa stated that they will "wipe away anything Portuguese in Goa". All this hatred because some Hindus 500 years ago chose to become Christians during the time of the Portuguese. They have one billion Hindus in India but i guess that is not enough? The schools today have a curriculum that focuses on conversion of Hindus and portrays the Portuguese in a bad light. They refuse to be equal and teach of the great legacy the Portuguese left in Goa. Only because of tourism have the old Portuguese buildings have been saved as the RSS wanted them all torn down when India took over in 1961. Hindu icons/sculptures are forcefully put in Christian neighborhoods. If they try to remove them because they are blocking traffic a whole group of thousands and thousands of men from the Bajrang dal show up showing their might threatening to harm the locals in that area. i wonder if the Christians that fought against the Portuguese ever thought what would happen to the Christians once India took over??? The Christians in Goa went from over 75% Christians at the turn of the 19th century to less than 23% Christians as Goa has had half its population today coming from the rest of India which is Hindu. And with the constant threats more and more Christians are choosing to leave with Portuguese passports. The Portuguese felt sorry for abandoning the Christian community and offered Portuguese citizenship to all people from Goa for up to three generations from 1961. Unfortunately when you are a minority in any community you will be constantly bullied and you will not have peace. This is why the Portuguese colony of East Timor fought to be independent. It is the only way to survive. The majority will always put laws in place to take any land or resources away from you. i wish this community the best of luck.
