A Jem not useful for a beginner? The floyd rose system makes the tuning stability amazing while having a super easy to use tremolo, it has both humbuckers and single coils, it has a modern easy to move on neck, and its fucking beautiful. I hate these guitar teachers that see anything that isnt a hardtail tele or strat and go "oh that sucks". Honestly hardtail classic les paul and starts suck for beginners. Just let the person choose the guitar style of the people they admire, the enthusiasm of having a guitar you actually want as a beginner can power you more than anything.
@virgilthemob12424 жыл бұрын
My point exactly. He traded one of the best playing guitars ever with a great bridge for a heavy, chunky slab of mahogany with much worse tuning stability and neckdive and little to no ergonomics. The instructor is probably one of those traditionalist snobs.
@mcamp94454 жыл бұрын
@@virgilthemob1242 my first guitar was a late eighties stat with a Floyd and it was a nightmare for me, though had I had the money and gotten it professionally setup and if their was youtube to figure string changes out it would have been much better. Also may not have been been not as good of a Floyd as in the JEM. Dealing with the locking nut and bridge etc was a pain and I could never keep it in tune. Sold it and was much happier. I’m not a tremolo user so it wasn’t right for me. So probably my fault
@virgilthemob12424 жыл бұрын
@@mcamp9445 You really can't compare Ibanez Edge trems with knock-off Floyds from the 80s. I started on a Jackson with a pretty bad licensed Floyd some years back and I know those can be bloody awful, but the Edge Zero II is a different animal. They stay in tune even if you divebomb and setting the intonation is not even half as difficult as it is on Floyds. Even mid range model trems have come a long way.

Question other than the traditional shape of an LP being loved is it technically a good design anymore? Headstock breaks, weight, ergonomics, tuning issues, etc? If it was introduced now without previously existing would it be a hit or be reviewed poorly?
@charlesbolton84714 жыл бұрын
That’s a couple of interesting questions. First, I think the Les Paul is a good design (at least in terms of the body shape). As far as the issues that you noted Gibson has at various times done things to solve (or lessen the likelihood of) those issues. The weight relief is the only change that doesn’t get constantly criticized by a large percentage of the Les Paul fandom. The real question is would the Les Paul be successful today as a totally new design? Personally, I don’t think so for two reasons. First, it wasn’t incredibly popular when it was in production the first time from 1952-1960 hence the reason it was discontinued. Second, the vast majority of guitarists don’t want something new (at least not a totally new design). It is really interesting to think about what the guitar world would be like if the Les Paul had never existed. Without the Les Paul would we have PRS? What guitars would the legends associated with the Les Paul play if it had never existed? Would Fender have collaborated with Les Paul (the man) to design a similar guitar? Maybe Epiphone would have built the Les Paul first and then it would have become a Gibson anyway. Who knows? I’m glad it does exist even though Fender Telecasters are my electric guitar of choice.
@shaunw92704 жыл бұрын
Les Paul headstocks don't magically break. Careless owners break them . Does nobody under the age of 40 understand that ? 🤷🎸
@charlesbolton84714 жыл бұрын
@@shaunw9270 I completely agree with you, but I’m over 40. They also break on other brands for the same reason. If your guitar has a bolt on neck you just buy a new neck and the problem is solved (and if it’s a neck that’s the same brand as the guitar nobody will ever know unless they check).
@mcamp94454 жыл бұрын
@@shaunw9270 they certainly break enough that trogly has to check every time and many he sees but doesn’t buy have been broken. The angle is too steep and they just aren’t strong enough imo. Fenders don’t break nearly as often as they don’t have the angle issue

@davehebert34034 жыл бұрын
@@shaunw9270 Totally agree. I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that, these days, most can't afford expensive guitars, and there is a bit of jealousy in the mix. That, and they couldn't afford such a purchase when they started, so they explain things away as being their "starter equipment." I purchased a PRS CE24 recently. I started playing a cheap Yamaha classical, and I'm classically trained. I always wanted learn how to play an electric guitar, so I got one. What I have also noticed is that since it's not a cheap guitar, it makes me want to practice more to justify the purchase. Also, I purchased the guitar because of the reviews on SweetWater. I didn't read one bad review, and each reviewer said they wished that they'd purchased the guitar sooner, mainly because it was such an easy guitar to play. All of the reviews said that as well.

Whoever that guys teacher was is a poor teacher in quality imo. I began early on with a floyd rose ibanez, took me a week of experimenting with the locking saddles and fine tuner adjustments to get it down but after i taught myself it, setup was ez, and playing even easier. That was before i had home internet too so i taught myself how it worked. Floyds aren't complicated as they look. If anything, easier than stringing up a strat imo. No backplates to remove, or ball ends to align, just clip the ends, lock, tune.

@@tinystar3010 My Father, Mother, and Sister taught/teach music. Before the days of the Internet, local music shops relied on people like them to move instruments. They'd also give them price discounts on their personal purchases. With those significant discounts, they were able to purchase quality instruments. Once you play those nice instruments, you start to realize exactly why they are more expensive. The quality is much better, and they tend to stay in tune. Things don't wobble around and such. A good example of this would be a Squire vs. an American or Mexican strat. The Squire might play well, especially if you do the setup correctly. OTOH, we all know that the Mexican or American strat should play well, right out of the box. Also, let's say that you decide to upgrade the Squire and change the tuners, pickups, strings, and the tremolo. No matter what you add to that Squire strat (or tele), people will see the Squire logo and tell you it's a Squire, especially if you try to sell the thing, and they'll only offer you Squire-type prices. This is another reason why I purchased the PRS CE24. It's not a reserve stock or custom, but it's still a great guitar, and that means that it should hold it's value. There is also an old adage that still holds true and probably always will: You get what you pay for.

Oh, and one more thing. Let's not forget that there are a *LOT* of unscrupulous folks out there, and when they see a beginner with an awesome guitar, they'll tell them that it's *WAY* too much guitar, hoping they'll sell it used to them at a significant discount. This is not the same thing as driving a 1000 BHP race car when just starting out, and they should be learning on a go-cart how to race in a Formula 1 vehicle. It's a frickin guitar, and they aren't all that complicated, unless someone is a complete moron :D.

Yeah, anything with a double-locking tremolo...I’d been playing 27 years when I got my first Floyd rose guitar & it was originally a fucking *DISASTER* I went back to telecasters, but underneath everything I still wanted to make Floyd Rose part of my thing...so now, 8 years later I’m playing with tremolo stabilizers, and modifying tremolo stabilizers, and it’s coming along...I can tell you that much...
