Now I guess you are by definition a pirate/captain now (at least to my knowledge [ unless you don’t have a boat of sorts I’m more recent on the channel idk much about you].)
@thewaffleman74418 ай бұрын
fun fact, because of the amount of grass types you run into in FRLG speedrunning, mudkip is actually a slower route than squirtle. Speedrunners have already tested out this theory before!!
@alexhirsch57388 ай бұрын
I don't know what they've found to be fastest for FR/LG, but I would have bet my house that Staryu was a top-tier choice that somehow went unconsidered. Strong base stats, especially high in speed and special offense, access to phenomenal TMs and HMs, and a perfect typing for Kanto. Water Stone access is fairly abundant, but even going out of the way to get one and then evolve Staryu, there's no way it's slower than Lapras
@videogameman1108 ай бұрын
@alexhirsch5738 I think it's because you have to go out of your way to get the rod or surfing, and then also catch it. While using lapras, you get it probably earlier and with no battle that isn't required.
@LonggoBonggo8 ай бұрын
@@alexhirsch5738I think the problem was that Staryu doesn't have a good answer for misty and the fact that it's also pretty frail, since the need for speedy hard hitting mons aren't as important as having a consistent pokemon throughout the game.
@jasonbell85158 ай бұрын
He knows. Mudkip is below squirtle on the thumbnail podium.
@thewaffleman74418 ай бұрын
@@alexhirsch5738 while all true i assume it would take too long to reach your potential as starmie. Having to wait to get the water stone in celadon city is way too long. Using staryu for that amount of time is just not reliable. This is all assuming you just hack in any mon as your starter

I feel like, in this format, Staryu would have been at least competitive, if not outright outclassing Lapras and Squirtle. In the remakes it gets water gun early, so Brock is a freebie, Camoflage-Recover would probably be enough to handle Surge without too much of a problem, and once you get to Celadon it can evolve into a 'mon with higher SpAtk and speed (at least until EVs make the latter irrelevant), and get access to stab Psychic and Surf, plus you can teach it TB and later blizzard for Lance. (Ice beam not being as trivial to get in the remakes is unfortunate, but with TB and Surf the only pre-Lance 'mons its hitting for super effective damage that aren't otherwise covered are Grass types, which are almost all part poison and thus nuked by stab Psychic) If you go into the E4 with Psychic, Surf, TB, and Blizzard, I think you hit everything for SE damage except Jynx and Alakazam. Meanwhile, Squirtle probably takes longer than Celadon to fully evolve, and ends up with worse offensive stats and movepool. It does get Bite for Psychics, but I think neutral stab Surf actually hits harder? Meanwhile it lacks TB and Psychic, and in return gets like... Brick Break, which is probably decent for random trainers, but not that much stronger than neutral stab Surf, and towards the end Earthquake, which still does less than stab SE Psychic against the one type that you encounter after the point in which you get it that isn't already covered by Surf. Dig is probably handy for Surge though.

okay but how do we handle misty with a staryu? I think she is the real problem tbh...
@galileodirectio8 ай бұрын
as in, I dont know if it has enough moves and bulk to get through her that early. (if so please let me know!)
@Zeppongola8 ай бұрын
@@galileodirectio Apparently Secret Power and Recover is sufficient; looks like there's a video of someone doing a similar run ( /watch?v=kYyPIBELtDs?t=1342 ), which suggests you can get there at 23 without too much grinding, and secret power is a 70BP move with a good chance to para, which is good enough to take out Staryu without much trouble and go toe to toe with Starmie, weaving in recovers and SPs as necessary. In between her AI making her use weaker moves and getting full-para'd, you get plenty of "free" turns with a bit of luck. I think that run is without in-battle items (and he seems to just walk everywhere rather than run, since he's playing on 4x speed), so we can't really compare the time of this video to that one, but it does show that Staryu at that level can clean up Misty's gym even without items, and for what it's worth they ended up with Staryu being faster than Squirtle (both slower than this Lapras run). Dunno how much items would change the calculus; I'm pretty sure Staryu at 15 isn't beating Starmie even with items, but dunno if he actually needed them with this Lapras fight since its edited so much; if he did need them, its possible Lapras would have needed quite a few more levels, since it has no recovery without them. If it could just plow through itemless at 15, then it does have a very strong head start over Staryu (but I doubt Squirtle is doing the same). Will be interesting to see if he uploads a Lapras run (or, for that matter, a Slowpoke/Tentacool/Poliwag/Shellder, who he used as examples over Staryu)

wouldn’t you go exeggcute? super affective against the first two gyms plus gets psychic type moves for the grass one which are all poison types and then is once again super effective against koga and giovanni plus it resits sabrina and lt. surge meaning its good against 5 of the gyms and resists 2 which is 7/8 where its good yet the last one gets is weak against and going into the elite 4 its good against 1 and weak against 2 so its not the best but could be worse there and finally going into the champion team he is supper effective against 2 and resits 1 while being weak to only 1 (possibly 2 if he has charizard)
@CaptainKiddYT7 ай бұрын
You have to realize that a Pokémon is way more than just its typing. Exeggcute doesn't even get a special move until Confusion at 19. Doesn't ever learn a Grass type move until Solar Beam at 43. Grass types are notorious for having bad learnsets in Gen 3. Not to mention, it wouldn't be able to evolve until you arrive in Celadon. It wouldn't even come close to the other options in terms of speed.
