My ex boss worked until 63,then retire. He had a few properties fully paid up and about 1.5m in EPF. Cancer striked after about 3 years later. Next few years was chemo and visiting hospitals. Before retirement, he told me his wish was to travel the world as much as he could. Would you think 4 trips a year somewhere for 3 years is enough? I don't think so! Don't wait until our bodies cannot take it anymore. If financially able, take things slower and enjoy your hobbies whilst you still can. From Malaysia.

i retired at 54, then 4 years later a job found me - so i "downgrade" my job as in i chose not to be in management, just second in command. I get to stay free, eat free except dinners, free transport to work etc (i am posted overseas), every weekend i go to nice places to fulfil my bucket list. another 1.5 years to go and I will retire again, unless another job finds me and be based at another exciting location with the perks.

My dad retired at 70. However, when we go for holidays, he could hardly walk much. Though he is healthy, he exercises regularly and is a vegan. He feels tired and we spend a good two hours sitting at cafes in between visiting places of interests. I feel sad but what happened to him has taught me to also learn to enjoy the fruits of my labour and not to wait till too late.

Good piece of advice. I am aware and been reading up this topic of Healthy lifespan sometime back. I have always contemplated retiring at 57 or 58 way back when I was in my late 40s. However due to the push factors of conforming to social norm and the lingering fear of wanting a even bigger financial safety net, I soldiered on in my job with aim to retire at 63. However , due to some workplace changes beyond my control, has prompted me to finally decided to make the leap. Will be calling it a day soon, later this year at close to 57. Guess with a prudent lifestyle and the fact that I no longer have financial obligation such as housing loan etc. Now it is time to plan for more self rewarding and fulfilling life while I am still fit and healthy.

Uncle Josh, good news, I officially retired on 1st July. The good stock market returns in the last 4 years has allowed me to goyang kaki liaw, before my 50th birthday :) One thing to keep in mind, cancer will hit 1 in 3 people and more younger folks are going down with it. Not a crime to retire earlier, as long as investment returns can cover our living expenses. Good luck.

Josh, good sharing. I am now 58. Still fit but can feel the different starting from age 55. Stamina getting quite challenging. I am now still in full time job but on semi retirement mode. I have reached the pinnacle of my career and no need to strive any more. Still enjoying current work environment. Started transiting to full retirement by picking up new hobbies and activities. Target retirement age at 65.

I observe that women, in general, tend to eat less than man. I also observe that woman tends to encourage, even pressure man to eat more especially when food is abundance. I also got a tip from my grandfather, who lived upto age of 95, that people whose food intake are excessive tend to have a shorter life. I have no scientific proof for this, but I suspect that there is wisdom in what my grandfather said. May be that explain partially as to why man lives a much shorter life than woman.

Majority of our health will start to decline after age 50. The best age to retire is 50 years old and not anything later. You might not be able to enjoy your life properly if you retire too late. Unless working till death is your passion, best to do what you love with the remaining years of your life.
@joshconsultancy

Start to decline ya, maybe even 40s but there is a balance to retiring early vs financial obligations (like raising a family).

Honestly, how many 70-ish retires can still climb stairs and walk long distances w/o getting out-of-breath? I would say conservatively 65yo for you to be healthy and still strong enough to enjoy life provided you exercise regularly and do not have major health issues. Just retire when your finances allow you to and always have good insurance coverage; enjoy the next 15 - 25 years doing something you truly enjoy. It can be leisurely working, help the community, achieve personal goals. Don't put your live on auto-pilot to join the rat race if you don't have to; also, create more employment oppty for the Gen Z, Z1, Z2, Z3... who may be your own kids, ha.

Retired in early 2020 at 53. No regrets. How I rationalise the decision is that the years of life remaining become increasingly valuable as one ages (there’s less years remaining). So at some point, it’s no longer worthwhile to trade one’s life for a salary 😅. For me, that point came after I hit 52.

@@joshconsultancy Worked in Government admin, then IT management, with past 20 years in a senior role before calling it quits. On average, able to save about 50% of income, mostly invested in our home, equities, corporate bonds and in the last few years, some mutual funds. Home is fully paid by age 40. In early years, had good capital growth through upgrading our home every 5 years or so during market downturns. Returns from stocks and bonds are more muted, about 5-6% per annum on average, though there are a few counters invested (like DBS and OCBC) that has seen spectacular growth in the past 5 years… Married young, so no more dependents when wife & I retired.

my colleague retires at 58yo with comfortable retirement savings. Her plan is to travel once every quarter to enjoy life. Less than 2 years later, she told me every trip tires her and she needs more time to rest and recharge her energy. Age is catching up and no matter how much money one has, energy will still decline.

The final retirement could be determined by your old and sick single parent who have dementia if you’re the caregiver. Many single parent doesn’t like to stay in nursing or old folks home and somehow many lost contact with their children due to various reasons. Singapore is fast catching up with Japan on lonely death.
