I do this with graphic design. I’m constantly moving my head around so I can look at my work from different angles. Sometimes I get up and look at it from a distance. My colleagues find it hilarious but it’s useful

Haha I always look at it on my phone really small to get a new perspective too! Same idea!

Also helps when you throw your mix to people in a different lane for feedback. Throw your trap track to your metal head buddies and send your metal track to your friend that that raps... good perspectives are often found.

Great point! Having a group of engineers/artists whose opinion you value and you can get feedback from is huge!

Absolutely what you said works! and I find forgetting a tune for a while and then having another listen works sort of along the same line

I made a few tunes a couple of years ago just for the hell of it. Being that I worked alone I really didn´t to much care about the little things. Just to have something finished to listen too. Not worrying about eq or compression or masking too much. But as time went on I started to notice these little things. I learned and worked on why my mix just SUCKED! Just because your using audio samples dosen´t mean that your mix can´t have a 3D feel to it. I would ask myself is the music breathing or is it just dead !? As I said I work along. When I work so long on something and get stuck on a problem it´s more than likely that I´m just tired. So I take my projects with me to bed. My dreams help me work through my lastest problem. And when I wake up the next morning I have the solution. But the main thing that helps me is to close my eye´s and listen with my minds eye. By doing this I´m serching for placement of instuments, front to back relationships ect. I was in America 3 years ago and heard some rap music that was put on the market meaning ( someboby was getting paid, I don´t know why ) over a flat scream T.V. Me personelly, I though it sounded like garbage. The music had the same boring loop patterens without movement. Now if you want to know what a boring loop sounds like? Play any drum machine patteren without any compression eq or reverb and listen about a minute......it´s the little things that you add that makes all the difference !

Absolutely! And yeah, modern sample-based rap is definitely sparse on the production end and is comprised of basically all synthetic sounds so it can get really repetitive if you're not careful!
