Love this channel. I am the sole caretaker of my 85 yr old husband. My "me time" is 7 to 9 am and you are my go to now with my coffee.. Starting a marathon of all your podcast. It's so much fun to recognize patterns I have sewn (60s and 70s) and my mom had sewn (40s and 50S).

If you are looking for a paneled/gored circle skirt to get that perfect pattern match stripe look, I highly recommend Charm Patterns Stanwyck skirt. I made it with a white and blue stripe and didn't even have to make an effort to get the stripes to meet.

I’m sending a little love as a thank you for inspiring me to crank my sewing machine back up after 7 years of chaos after my fourth kid was born (a surprise!) I’ve already made a couple of dresses, skirts, and a top and I’m in sewing heaven re-learning how to ease a sleeve and install a zipper (properly, for once in my life 😂). I think it was the Walkaway repro video that did it. So - Thank you from a fellow red-headed Orlandoan! ❤️

Thank you. I have never heard of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I don't watch TV. However, I do love most of the garments you showed me. None of them would fit me (or look right on me) at my age. But, I do enjoy remembering how beautiful women's garments were when I was young.

I saw a few dresses with a skirt style that stood out to me, its like a faux version of the pencil skirt peekaboo with the full skirt on top. Rose is wearing one in the scene where shes hypnotized, but i saw it on at least one of midge's dresses too. Id love to find a pattern with that style, although i think i know how its done

I have to say having made the Butterick 6018 reproduction several times, it actually makes a beautiful dress, and it fits really well (except length, I’m 5’2” and I have to shorten it a foot to make it a more flattering length on me other wise it goes to my ankles and looks really weird) so please don’t knock that pattern I think you’d be surprised how well it actually works.

New here, but sympathizing with the hand brace situation! I have had one hand issue in 2022, needed physio and brace. Took 11 months to get better In 11th month, I was trying to spare my just healed L hand, so wrung cloths with R hand extra vigilantly...now dealing with trigger finger for last 6 months. Ugg....getting old is a rotter! I WANT TO SEW AND CUT FABRIC!!!

The whole point of getting a pattern and making your own dresses is to make them fit your body instead of trying to get your body to fit whatever a store is trying to sell you, you don't need to be a particular shape, just get the right pattern

Sorry, but I have to correct you. The pink coat has a shawl collar (or more accurately, shawl lapel), not a rolled collar. A rolled collar is typically used on a dress or blouse without a front closure (though there are exceptions) and stands up a bit. Often, the neck opening is wide, like a boat or bateau neckline. A shawl collar/ lapel is very similar in constructtion to the notched lapel that we're most used to seeing on men's suits.

@trishayamada807: Frequently, fur collars were mounted on other fabric, & made to be removable (for cleaning). Would you like the coat better without fur? A brocade or tapestry fabric over a quilted fabric would also be "dressy". 19:31 CDT, Thursday, 13 July,2023

🙋🏼‍♀️I own several repros because a) I’m cheap and can’t pay $20-$30 for a vintage pattern right now (thanks for the $4.99 Vogue sales, Jo-Ann!) and b) I like the ‘50s style in general. I wear the stuff I make, but I do admit it’s tempting to just collect patterns like some people collect Barbies. It doesn’t make as much sense, I think. But it is what it is 😂

Up until the time I retired from working retail, I made and wore reproduction vintage dresses regularly. They were uniformly very flattering and generally fun to buy fabric for. I especially liked the dresses from the 1940's, which, during the War Years, took little yardage but were always comfy and I got many compliments when wearing them.

There is actually a large portion of the sewing community that makes vintage clothes (myself included). So reproductions are how some folks can afford to make them.

You might be surprised where vintage fashions are hiding ... most of them do not look like the pattern art when worn by a real human without girdles and crinolines. I still fit into and wear clothing I purchased in the 1980s and 90s ... since these were classic basics, nobody can even tell how old they are. A circle skirt in a late 1950s color / pattern screams VINTAGE, but the same skirt in white linen looks fresh and very modern. [Must finish the 27 miles of hemming!] Also, some of us get a much better fit with vintage patterns.

@@StephanieCanada I have a friend who teaches costume design at Dalhousie University. It seems that there are basic silhouettes used in time periods and the fabric, decorations and undergarments give it the right look. I wouldn’t be happy wearing a dress with a waist seam since I don’t have a waist.🤷‍♀️ Buying or sewing clothing from these styles would present a challenge. I enjoy your videos and glad you are back.
