Maaco is fine as long as you do the body work and prep yourself. Lessons for anyone that goes to maaco or any autobody shop. Don't accept your vehicle if its freshly washed. to anyone who cares to understand the opperation at maaco, the one painter on each site is very limited on the paint supplyed for each job, they want a average of 10/12 cars per 8hr shift, the body guys(atleast 5 per site) cant keep up with the demand in the front office. the painter usually knows and has plenty of experiance but when shoved shit in your face day after day, its just another color. before i started painting i payed maaco to do three cars of mine. i knew the shop and had zero issues with anything. i did my own body work after figuring out there rush system. to pay that price they shoulda sent in a guy over the weekend to dial it in. not all maacos are equivelant

If you paid for bodywork, it's not acceptable. I learned my lesson with MAACO: when they do the estimate, make sure you point out EVERY SINGLE DING AND DENT that you want repaired, and make sure they circle each one on the vehicle itself with their yellow marking crayon AND have written it down on the estimate - "dimple in left rear quarter panel," "dent in right front door," etc etc.

That location is particularly bad, me and Eric worked next door for awhile until we moved to our new shop. I feel like they could have put in not much more effort and you would have been pretty happy at that price point. Having said all that if they don’t take care of you, hit up Eric and we’ll cut and buff the runs out and fix that one really obvious dent on the quarter. If you want to try to PDR it first Bill Gewalt is the MAN, and local, usually will come to you. I can definitely relate to the “wasnt fun but I’m proud of it” statement lol. That same paint job costs me $650 today and for another $75 I get integrated clear. For a base clear paint job $1400 is a great price except that they didn't quality control it as they normally never do! Maaco is not known for bodywork and if they said it was done you need to raise holy hell because it's awful. You need to find out if it's a corporate store or a franchise. It will make a huge difference if it's a franchise because if you complain to Maaco corporate it creates major problems with the franchisee. If its a corporate store all you have to do is tell the manager of the store you are dissatisfied with the work and they will do it as many times as they need to do it to get it right. At the end of the day the job is substandard and $2900 for that finished product is unacceptable.

Isn't that body aluminum? Whole different animal for some body guys. I've use Maaco 5 times, the one time I wasn't happy 100% was when I didn't do my own prep.

@@91lrrrc Thought so as I was a former Rover D1 owner. Keep in mind that body work, skilz required are a bit of a different to work with....should have been brought up in advance of the work....just say'in, the dent in the rear there's now excuse, the rest of it could have turned out a lot worse. Holy crap. You can see the runs in the paint in a separation of metallics. I would take it back and have them respray it let them know you're a KZbinr and that you will post another video of how they treated you

My first job out of auto body school was at a Maaco. I didn't even last a week. EVERYTHING about that place went against EVERYTHING that I was taught. THE "manager" was a complete pile of it and he didn't do paint or body work. He chained smoked and tried to get anyone that walked through the door to quit as fast as he could. He had less than zero respect for EVERY customer. I wouldn't even call their 'paint" paint. Knowing what I know, I would NEVER take any car there. Not even for a car wash.

3k is a very cheap overall. The material cost alone at a “real” body shop would be a significant part of that alone, even at cost. Im fairly certain Maacao is a mask and spray place, the “body work” you paid for is probably mostly for the labor time for the “r&i’s” of all the parts taken off, not necessarily to swipe and block every panel on the vehicle. I work at a dealership body shop, unless your doing it yourself your paying 2-3 times that but it would look good.

Anytime you have paint and or bodywork done, never accept it on anything but a sunny day. If that’s not possible request an inspection indoors and that the vehicle is dry. Look from multiple angles and distances. Use reflections to check for straightness. And always take your time.

Anyone who thinks Macco is good is crazy. I mean, you can do the bodywork and remove all moldings, trim, etc, and they will still mess it up. $3000 for that is insane in my opinion, for a macco job.

I once took my old truck to Macco, they said it would be 1000 bucks or something to strip the paint, prep and repaint everything. So i did all the prep work myself and they proceeded to charge me 1300 with runs included.

Id be pissed if i I payed that much for that paint job. Thats exactly why ive been collecting all the stuff to do my own body work and paint. I custom painted a motorcycle for my first paint job and it cost me around 700$ for the paint and supply's (most of which was the custom metallic paint at 90$ a pint). When i do my car it'll most likely be the same if not a little cheaper because im just doing a basic black and 2k clear. I just dont understand why these body shops are charging these outrageous prices. The only thing i can think is that these places have turned into 99% insurance work, meaning they can charge these crazy prices and get away with it. The adverage person which is the majority just cant afoard a 5k+ paint job. The body work is the hardest part and i get it should cost some money but 1000$+ an hour is just insane..The actual guy doing it isnt making 10% of that an hour🤷♂️.. My dad recently went to a shop to get a quote on this little (4×5) dent on a rear truck door, and they quoted him 3800$🤔..its even got easy access from the inside (back side of dent). It just doesnt add up to me.. Maybe half a days labor at almost 4 grand! Shoot id work on a car a month for that price and be very happy with that😂

Damn i had a car painted by maaco back in 2012. I paid $2k for their top of the line paint with some body work. It turned out great except i opted to paint the door jams. They didn't mask off the door jam stickers very well so theres a ton of overspray on them. Oh well. Now in 2024 the car looks 80% as good as it did when it was first painted. But its been garaged for most of that time.

So.... I had my 64 dart done. Paid $3,300 with tax. My job was basically the same as yours. I just needed the super- freakishly ugly spots and rusty roof sealed up and they did accomplish that. They did better on mine on the bad places. I did have a lot of hail damage that I knew was out of scope for the money I was willing to pay. People don't notice my hail damage, unless I point it out... but, overall... I guess I am happy with my paint job, cause I didn't have to inhale fumes, or bondo dust.

Not being in you country, it's a little hard to know what the average paint and bodywork job costs from other panelbeaters as to value for money side of things. Through KZbin channels though, I have gotten the picture that Maaco is sort of a hit-and-miss result kind of place - sometimes it works well, other times not so much, so I get that its not a high-end, bespoke shop that you'd send a priceless Lamborghini to. In saying that, there is a rule in any western country that if you have PAID for something, you should get it.....and given that the rather expensive two-stage paintwork was less than half the cost of the final bill, something doesn't add up. The rippling effect can be caused by two things (usually) - a) overheating of the panel by sanding too heavily in one area or b) bad technique when skimming the bodyfiller and / or primer layers during prep. In an industry that has learned and changed much in the last 40 years and now has a lot of options during prep to hide places containing heavier amounts of filler - and where guide coats are routinely used to show up high and low spots in the prep - that crap level of finish is no longer acceptable. Similarly, the high and low spots (ie: dents from external or internal sources) in the panel work SHOULD have been taken care of as part of the "bodywork" component of the labour cost. In every job, a prior walkaround and agreement on what is taken care of is usually done if there are any questions about what the bodywork labour component will cover. The runs in the paintwork (and I'll put money on the fact there will be more) are again unacceptable as a "finished and ready for the customer" result. Yes the customer may be able to tidy them up if they know how, but it would be MY expectation as a paying client that they do not exist to begin with. In a recent repair from a panelbeater for my wife's car after being in a minor shunt from behind, the bodywork and prep was good but it was like they had painted it next to the bloke sandblasting the next job. There was so much crap sitting in the paint - and being a silver car, it looked like we had reversed at speed into a huge swarm of mosquitoes. I told them I was not accepting it and it had to be redone. What came back was so perfect that - as well as thanking them personally and acknowledging how great it looked - I gave them a rave review on their social media and website pages, although I did mention that they didn't get it right first time. If you do not complain, you do not get an opportunity for a change in the result you've been given and the company does not get a chance to right the wrong or put steps in place to stop it happening again (if they care at all about repeat business, customer service and their name / reputation in general). If you complain and they basically tell you to shove it where the sun don't shine, well, social media is a pretty good platform for getting the word out, isn't it? Or...at least you know where not to take a vehicle next time if you want it to look good and get what you pay for. The lesson I think is to convey or manage expectation and always make sure you know what work will be done for the money you will be handing over BEFORE they start the job by walking around the car and either noting or marking areas to be addressed. If you did this, then you have grounds to go back and demand either a full refund or that they correct the work - whichever suits best. Also if you did not ask them to remove the side mouldings, then they should NOT have removed the side mouldings and any damage cause by said removal is on THEIR time and dime to repair, not yours. In saying all that, I think the vehicle looks great from a distance, will be awesome inside once completed and was worth the paint job to make it look better.

A $400 paint job would suit the vehicle better. $2900 for a paint job on a vehicle thats worth a quarter of the price isn't though.
