Hey George ...Ive reno'd houses heaps....also bit of air b nb. You talked about rugs/what to do about cleaning. one of the best investments we made was buying one of the small bissell spotclean/turbo machines...it sprays (antibacterial solution) & suctions quite well. this way we're able to clean our rugs (semi) regularly without a worry. also then doesnt matter if guests accidentally spill something. cheers

Patchy - if you rent one of those rug cleaners, take your rug outside on cement to clean it. It’ll save your wood floors and you can hang it over something to dry . Experience is a good teacher. I love the extra touches - makes it a little more homely and warm!

For the large blank wall, I would do some oversize mirrors! Either 3 large ones hung vertically and going across or one big one hung horizontally. It’ll bounce light around and add depth to your space. Whatever you decide, I’m sure it’ll look great. 😊👍🏻

I wouldn't put anything on the blank wall, but hang a chandelier above the stairs, maybe something more vintage looking to bring contrast to everything being quite modern. Would give a big impact to the space

The plants add a nice cozy touch. I also think a big fabric wall hanging would be nice on that wall. An inexpensive way to do that is to just create a large square with lumber and staple some fabric yardage around it. Just make sure you don't make the frame bigger than the yardage width! Also a word of caution, personal things like your grandmothers barometer might be better kept to yourself. Just when you think all airbnb customers are fabulous one comes along and takes your personal things with them as a keepsake. And, you are very fastidious but customers might clomp around in their shoes so having a mat by the door where they can take them off when they come in might help on wear and tear. Your place looks great, wish I could travel to Scotland to stay in it! Sending pats to George, love her!
@jamiejoygatto
@jamiejoygatto 10 ай бұрын
For the same reason you've suggested -- the clomping around -- I'd be sure to affix anything possible to the walls, such as the barometer, should George keep it in the house. Hang any leaning paintings, and use museum putty underneath any plants or objects on shelves to keep them stable from falling off. PLEASE DO NOT PUT OUT real candles on the shelves. You're inviting the house to burn down. Use artificial candles in jars or just a different type of knick knack -- even the plain glass jars are better than leaving candles in an Air BnB.

put some marigolds on and take the rug out to the garden and get soap powder and water and use your hands or a scrub brush and scrub away a wee while then rinse the soap away with water ( a hose is good) and works really well over a line...let drip dry and clean rug no cost, do this often when i find nice rug that people throw out because dirty but nothing else wrong with it

My idea for the blank white wall is to hang neutral colored tapestry. you could choose neutral colors or even a white or just light beige and it could be fairly big I think. You wouldn’t commit to painting the wall. But I think the texture of a cozy textile can create a warmer atmosphere in contrast to the plain white wall now which can make a room feel on the colder and more hostile side.
@macelven
@macelven 10 ай бұрын
I totally agree, something like a light coloured tapestry would be warming, and add some texture to the space, without overpowering the whole area.

A room isn’t “cold” because one wall isn’t decorated. The rest of the room is nicely decorated so it feels plenty warm for an airbnb. Anything fabric will just collect dust and be hard to clean so he’s better off just leaving it the way it is.

Such a lovely makeover! However, having stayed in many Airbnbs over the years, I do have a few recommendations. The blinds in the bedroom were a very thoughtful addition but after taking your listing photos, I recommend removing the little plants from the window sills. They look nice but as an Airbnb guest, I prefer bare surfaces. Maybe put one small tray, something unbreakable, maybe wood or acrylic for guests to put glasses, phone, keys, whatever. Also, two of those folding luggage racks for guests’ suitcases would be practical and welcome additions to the bedroom. It’s important to think about places for guests to charge their devices. Travelling as a couple, we love it when Airbnbs have charging stations(?) on both sides of the bed. But in your case, maybe one upstairs and one downstairs might work better. I also recommend removing your grandmother’s barometer and your cute orange kitty plant pot and anything else of sentimental value. Most guests are honest but all it takes is one. And some guests are clumsy. Breakage will happen. The old photos of the village are a wonderful decor item. As another commenter said, a few relevant guidebooks and/or ones on local history are also a good addition. A binder with local information about restaurants, sights to see, hiking trails etc. is also always appreciated. It’s also a good place to put any instructions and contact numbers for guests. The new houseplants are lovely but you might want to consider removing them as well when it comes time to rent the house. I don’t know if it’s because of concerns over damage or care but I can’t recall ever seeing real houseplants in any of the airbnbs we’ve stayed over the years. A few in outside pots, but not indoor ones. And from a purely aesthetic standpoint, I like the bare white wall going up the stairs. It makes the space feel more expansive. Your thoughtful placement of wall art, and the floating shelves provide a nice balance that brings it back to a human scale. Your place is minimalist but also warm and inviting. Perfect for Airbnb. Thank you for sharing the evolution of your beautiful home. PS Despite her “boxing” habit, Junior is absolutely adorable! 🥰

I agree. Some folks get nervous at a large blank wall, l but I honestly think putting anything on that one would just close in the space, making it feel smaller rather than cosier. As is, it expands the rooms dimensions, by not stopping the eyes. The rest of your changes are pretty darn nice, making it feel more homely. No worries doing carpet shampooing, it works well, just don't do it on wooden floors. The trick is not to soak it too much as you clean. If you watch professional carpet cleaners at work you'll see that their suction machines get most of the dirty water out, so you're not dealing with wet rugs forever. I'm in Canada so I'm not sure what your 24 hour rental machines are like but here ours are effective if used correctly. Often what you assume is wear and tear on a carpet or rug is just muck, and cleaning can return it to almost new condition. I'd go for that option. Your rug is small and won't be any trouble to clean and get dry even in a clammy Scottish mizzle. You can hang it over your stair railing till it's no longer soggy. 😊

Hi George, I clean Air BnBs for a living. You are so right to cosy things up, in my experience I find guests LOVE: Throw rugs Boardgames Nice selections of hot chocolate, tea, and good coffee Generous, fluffy towels Bathmats (there will be puddles!) Lots of places to charge phones/ laptops etc Crisp white sheets Space for luggage Lamps (the ultimate room cosying device) Books, dvds etc Rubbish bags and places to leave recycling Nice glassware for wine and whiskey List of takeaway restaurants in the area The throws, boardgames, books, lamps, glassware can all be sourced secondhand. If you're buying new linen then duvets and pillowslips made from linen is the most forgiving, wrinkles only make it look cosier and make-up stains come out easier As a cleaner I can tell you plants tend to get damaged, knocked over, or killed if someone isn't checking on them every couple days. They're also a pain to dust. Thick pile rugs are very hard to keep clean as guests tend to leave crumbs and hair everywhere Dark towels (grey, navy, charcoal) are much easier to keep looking good if you don't have a professional laundry service Invest in a light, portable, good quality vacuum cleaner Glass/ window cleaner gets rid of all fingermarks on every surface - brilliant for chrome taps! Don't bother with a lot of cushions, they always end up on the floor Spell out all instructions to your guests extremely carefully, as though you were explaining it to a five year old because they don't tend to read instructions. They will phone you at midnight because they can't work the TV remote! I think the blank wall is restful and gives a nice space for sun to create shadows or lamps to light up at night. I like my job, I like making my guests happy, it can be a lot of fun. Goodluck!

Love the new floating shelves and plants, lools more homely. Avoid leaving any real candles in your home, they are a massive fire hazard and you could lose the place if a guest forgets to blow them out. I'd buy some battery operated ones instead, much safer and they give the same effect. As you've added quite a few extra items of interest, I'd leave the stair wall as it is or you risk it looking too cluttered.

I love floating shelves! And indoor plants! I have a very tiny house too (I think smaller footprint than yours but bigger overall because it’s over 3 floors). It’s still got most of its original features and doesn’t even have heating yet, by I’m hoping to make it really nice eventually. I love watching your videos for inspiration (and because they’re very calming). Do you have many mirrors up? I find mirrors are really good for small spaces, particularly staircases where they can bounce the light. Maybe a mirror could go in that big white space. Mirrors + fairy lights are a win for me but maybe a bit effeminate for you.

Looks great. I love that you kept the old photos of the village. That gives the house context and character. For the wall next to the stairs, please don't put any more pictures there. They are a distraction and can cause people to slip and fall. I would suggest a hanging textile if you can find something that will work with the other things in there. Stick to the same color families, or washed out/neutral colors, but find something with pile or cut texture to soften the wall.

I think you can rent a small steam cleaner and clean the rug that way. It's inexpensive and usually works very well. As for the fiddle-leaf fig, I think it may need a little more light. They don't like harsh, direct, light, or too much heat, but if you move it to the right a little, it'll probably like it better. Lastly, regarding the big expanse of white wall that you have in your staircase, I wonder if a large topographical map/or regular map of the area, or Scotland as a whole, would be a nice touch for people coming from away. Just a thought :-) The house looks peaceful and beautiful. Well done!

To refresh your rug, try purchasing /borrowing /renting a carpet shampooer. Failing that, maybe drop it off at a carpet cleaner. You might want to be careful about having candles in your rental space if you don't want people to have an open flame. Perhaps a battery candle instead? Also, I wouldn't leave out anything precious, like your grandmother's barometer, in case it disappears or gets broken. Next time your plant gets bigger than you like, consider tying some of the stalks together instead of removing them. For your large stair wall, what about adding texture? A few strips of 1x2 pieces of wood, forming intersecting triangles and rectangles, painted to match the wall, could be interesting without being overwhelming.

Hello George, We often vacation in cottages and are usually happy when there are free drawers, compartments, tables and shelves. Too much deco stuff we often even collect, put it on a cupboard and try to put everything back properly when we leave. What I'm saying is don't worry too much about empty spaces. Once guests have arrived and unpacked their stuff for a week-long stay, it won't look so empty right away.

I can imagine a big colourful abstract simple piece of art on that big blank white wall. I think it would pop and give a boost of colour especially in the white/calm palette the rest of the home has. :)

Really lovely upgrades:) I particularly love your new botanical prints. As for the big blank wall I have exactly the same issue going up a narrow staircase so I'm reading everyone's answers with interest:)

For the white wall, you might want to consider removable wall decals. They shouldn't affect the paint and you can swap them as your mood suits or as the seasons change. Plenty of options for sale online. Your place is looking good!

Thinking from a business perspective re: AirBnB - less is more. All the little decorative pieces is just more things to clean between guests. Also could be likely to get knocked and broken. Personally though for yourself they’re good changes you have a good eye for design. I think pictures with history to the place and property are great for guests to look at with maybe some accompanying books about the local area on a shelf. So maybe something along those lines for the big white wall if you’re thinking of things to put up for Airbnb purposes. 😊

I’ve used a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner with great success! A tip for getting the best results: Rinse well w/water x 2, then make your final rinse with carbonated water. Then let it dry completely before using it again. (Usually three days in a warm, dry environment w/ a fan blowing on it for good air circulation.)

I feel you Junior, I initially thought the packaging was the pot itself, the texture 5:06 would look so nice on a pot.

A large textile is great for a wall space. It will add texture, color, and also dampen vibrations and make a space less echoey.

Hello Patchy! Even though I'm not a big fan of the minimalist style, I just love your tiny house! I think it's a very nice and cute gesture to put old photos of your village on the wall. Maybe if you have a couple more, you could even use them, or even one or two old/vintage decorations. On the white wall I put a wallpaper. Or a plant leaf pattern, or an old book page, train ticket, or newspaper article. I serve these quite often and they always look fantastic!

Looks so cozy. For the big blank wall I thought of something a little different. If you search for “wall hanging mountain macrame” you’ll see some fun ideas.

Hi George - your tiny house is so lovely. Have you thought of hanging a rug on that wall at the top of the stairs? Some kind of decorative rug that would fill up the space nicely and complement the rest of the furnishings.

Lovely makeover. May husbands cousin who is an artist hung a beautiful rug over her stairs and it is lovely. I can totally see something like that in your tiny house. As it would add another texture and potentially some colour

Looking lovely and adding plants make place more welcoming! 👍😊 3:03 - Be careful on choice of items to display such as sentimental item from your gran, some guests can be a bit naughty taking items with them as they check out! 😬

On that big white wall space, what about a gallery wall/collage of your favorite photos from when the tiny house was being renovated? Plus a couple photos of it before you bought it showing what it served as for different families, if it's old, if that's worth showing. A bit of the house history. It's an interesting place.

Looks beautiful - Junior is adorable, especially in the packing material. I’m with those who told you to take your grandmother’s barometer and Junior-look-alike plant pot out before you start renting - some guests will be clumsy, and others may make off with things. Re art on the wall by the stairs - I like the idea of a map ( suggested in the comments), but I also like it blank, and blank is easier! Only put something up there if you can do it really cheaply!

I have a big blank wall too. I purchased a 4'x4' barn quilt made of wood. Waiting for the artist to complete my custom design and colors. I liked the tapestry idea suggested by another too.

All looks great, and I too think a quilt or tapestry would be great for that blank wall, would add texture and warmth. I have a ginger and white tabby named Percy, and he also loves to eat-- he's pretty much on a constant diet!

I like what you've done to "cozy-up" your wonderful home for the eventual rentals. For that large wall, I would do some kind of textile to add some dimension and texture, and it will also absorb sound some. Maybe an inexpensive Persian style rug - or a tapestry or other handwoven textile. Needs to be fairly sizeable so it doesn't get lost on the large wall - and could be a nice hit of color. You are very creative and I'm certain will fine exactly the right thing when you see it. Thanks for sharing your life with us. And I love your cat!
