He supplements the lyrics and the sentiment of this song with perfectly synchronized and clearly expressed body language. To do that, not only is a great deal of self-confidence required, but also to be a great showman. Frank was a master of delivery - in every sense.

He’s a finger-snapping Mr. Cool Blue. But bubbling through is the real deal: Mr. Red Hot. Note his passion in the amusing ways he plays around with the sound of words. It’s especially clear on “your fabulous face” and on the bridge. Also, the carefree way he flicks at his cigarette after “I get no kick in a plane,” the ironic look up, the innocent exasperation on “nothing to do,” and clever pose at the end. We get the boost, but Mr. Sinatra winks, daring us to love him. Who can resist?

Sinatra’s slanting swagger, supple voice, and knack to craftily phrase a song are evident. But those qualities don’t necessarily speak to his charm, sensuality, and intelligence. A key is his extraordinary ability to allow his wandering thoughts to creatively inform his performance. It’s Method Acting 101 applied to singing. Spontaneity is lovingly allowed with all its rough and pointy edges. It all clicks, even when he seems to nearly fall out of the song from laughing.

The Chairman of all Chairmen in a live TV performance from the 50s: a quaint, curious, and revealing take on an American classic. No special TV effects or color available in those days and only a lone camera follows the master. Yet the simple evocative setting of the album cover works. What pierces through the nicotine fog and sparkles is quintessentially elegant and sassy Sinatra. Contemporary singers could learn a lot from his straightforward approach.
