This video is the best example of how hypercritical artists can be about their own art cause I not only glossed over the imperfections but didn't even hear them as I was listening to the whole and not any specific part

PREWARNING: this is very theory heavy so if you aren't in tune with theory please don't be discouraged or intimidated by this talk, everything I mentioned is perfectly learnable off the internet. So to respond to how she makes harmonies: I can't speak for her process but what she seems to like to do (or at least what she did in Apple Pie) was adding a third above her lead. In the bigger parts she goes 4 part harmony, usually the main chord (major, minor, sus, etc) is made with 3 lines then she'll add an extension as the 4th line (a 9th or 11th I think she uses in Apple Pie). She takes these lines and almost always inverts the chord so the 3 higher lines are in close harmony, and the lowest harmony line has more space, sort of acting like a bassline. In the largest sections she'll maybe add more voices or she'll move the close harmony to be further apart. She will also add other vocals lines which arent supporting the lead vocal, but instead doing a little pad or riff or whatever emblishment, and half the time the embelishments will have harmonies too. Beyond that she is doing more clever theory stuff (idk if she is knowingly doing this or is subconsiously doing it). These more advanced theory things will be paying more attention to tension and resolution. Doing actual clever chord trasitions and finding really colourful or more abstract chords, often playing with dissonance in a very jazzy way. This is really easy to hear, because you really feel it when she goes into a complex chord or resolution, you just don't always know what she's doing exactly. As she does all this she is aware what chords she's making (or just hearing them without much theoretical thought) but she is probably aware of the shape of each harmony line as well. She knows if she wants things to move on parallel or contrary, etc etc. Really the practical takeaway if you aren't experinced with harmonies is to pay attention and spend lots of time focusing on the exact chords you're making around your lead. Then focus on how each line is gonna move to make those chords. Also have a GREAT take of each line, sloppy takes will ruin her style.

I’m not hearing anything cringe. You have a gift and you clearly work hard. As a self produced musician, I do know the feeling and eventually it becomes nostalgic and funny. It’s hard not to look back and be critical of past projects as a creative person. Cheers from Central MA!

this was more than interesting, my takeway is quality over quantity. Your songs are actually very simple in terms of layers, it's just having solid harmony, sound selection, writing and performance. No complex layering of sounds, no fancy production techniques. And I say that in the nicest way, it's good to see that good music doesn't have to be impossibly hard to produce.

As a songwriter and (amateur) producer, listening to other artists "bad music," we as the audience don't really hear why they're not good per say, but I totally get where Lizzy is coming from, cuz I am extremely hypocritical of songs that I've even completed yet got great feedback.... interesting concept when pertaining to the difference between the viewers and the writers.
