Just to correct you Trogly, “double gold” is not a different finish to normal. It’s what Gibson have been calling the finish they do on the 1954, 1956 and 1957 Goldtops for several years now. You can check it out on their website where they use the “double gold” description for all of those guitars’ finishes.
@davidwonpu3532 жыл бұрын
Thank you for clearing that up. Was the original finish ever listed as “Goldtop” by Gibson or was that just what we began referring to them as colloquially? Speaking of pre-Bursts, do you know why the Custom Shop does ‘53 Customs with an ABR-1 when they didn’t introduce the TOM until 55/56?
@davidburke21322 жыл бұрын
@@davidwonpu353 original Les Paul advertisements from the early to mid 1950s just referred to the Goldtop as the “Les Paul Model”. Clearly at some point Gibson officially adopted the Goldtop name, but not sure when that was. About the tuneomatic there are a couple of things. Gibson doesn’t make a 1953 Custom reissue, they make a 1954 Custom Reissue, which is important for what follows. The tuneomatic wasn’t invented in 1955/56 but in 1953. It was originally fitted onto the Super 400. In 1954 it was then fitted onto the newly introduced Les Paul Custom. So Gibson reissuing a 1954 Custom with tuneomatic bridge is completely historically correct.

There's a bit of a difficulty with tension-bar Bigsbys and Tune-o-Matic-style bridges, which it looks as if this guitar has the problem: too much break-angle. The strings usually bind on the back edge of the bridge, and it makes the already stiff tension-bar Bigsbys even stiffer, plus it will make the bridge sag in the middle, messing up the radius worse than all of Salvatore Tessio's "arrangements". The fix is to install a BricksBiggsFix. The budget fix is to shim up the front end of the Bigsby, then swap in a shorter(or softer) Bigsby spring.
