A politician in my area accidentally admitted that the cameras were a money grab despite what they claim. They wanted to put a camera at a busy intersection "for safety" but the city and the county were in a lengthy dispute over how they would split the loot. A politician complained in the press, "We are losing money every day we argue about this!". Safety was not his primary concern after all.

These cameras were installed years ago in the city of Berkeley, CA where I live but were removed after awhile. I believe that there were studies done on the details of the operation of the cameras that showed dwell times for the yellow light phase of the light cycle being shortened, as compared to what the times were originally set to. It became pretty obvious that the government and these private companies were using the new technology purely as a money-making device, not as an attempt to improve traffic safety as had been claimed.

It should not be a crime to use automation to enforce good laws. Your argument that since no one was hurt she did not break the law. Most of the time when people break traffic laws no one is hurt, so are you saying that justifies no traffic laws? People can drive seventy through a school zone because usually kids are not killed? People should drive on sidewalks because usually no one is standing at that exact spot? People should run traffic lights because usually the intersection is clear? I am not a troll. I am saying be reasonable. Traffic laws are saving her and your life as well as everyone's. I'm for as many personal freedoms as possible but drag racing on streets makes life pure hell and is illegal for a good reason.
@deadlyta5 жыл бұрын
@@quicknumbercrunch8691 actually yes People shouldnt be punished in a free country unless they harm others However I also suport stiffer punishments for when someone is hurt My state , Ga, 4 years is not uncommon for killing someone. It should be life I feel that traffic guidelines should exist to determine faught , for both insurance and crimnail culpability but I dont feel that a cop pulling someone over and charging them for speeding and then sending them on there way does anything to prevent people from speeding or give any incentive for police to prevent people from speeding . The state makes money here. Look I dont think people should go 140 mph in a 35 but I also dont think a one sizes fits all legal system is fair or that the goverment knows better then the individual what the individual can safely handle . I think as long as a person doesnt push there vehicle or themselves past there limit then they should be fine and they shouldnt be punished and that those who do and wreck hurt others or property should be punished harder. I do apologize for the troll comment I do see where you are coming from my views are a bit unique but paying a state breaking the law because she broke the law is a case of two wrongs dont make a right and I figured it was sarcasm . I dont expect you to agree with me but i just think the system at current encourages curuption and doesnt really do anything to prevent accidents , I've had enough friends die in car accidents or come close to want to prevent them but I don't think the system does that.

So ignoring it has not made the issue go away. You're still getting fined, probably while they are waiting for the legislation to come through as to how they enforce it. You think they want to pay for a service they can't recover costs on? You don't suppose they're putting retroactive legislation through now? Arlington is still chasing the fines, and other areas are deciding on how to deal with the issued fines before Bill 1631 was signed by Gov Abbott. Why not keep ignoring things in life that you don't like, and avoid responsibilities, until one day you're on the other end of the stick. You broke a law, why not be accountable? Has it meant you're more or less likely to do it again? Isn't the fine small in comparison to the potential carnage you may have caused? Is this advice for all drivers to disregard laws and responsibilities if there's a tiny loophole to weasel out? I dunno, it seems a bit illustrative of why the rest of the world laughs at Americans and their disregard for being accountable. The fines aren't for revenue raising, the money is used to contribute to safer intersections, and helping the trauma wards in hospitals. I dunno what sepo's think, but personally I think that's not a bad thing. Using fines from those irresponsible drivers to do such things is a great way to utilise a resource. Perhaps think of the fine as a donation to a hospital, it's much cheaper than paying for a wheel chair bound victim, or for a funeral. I'm all for smaller government, and less regulation, but I'm also aware that I enjoy safe roads for my family. Blatant disregard for safety, and proudly bragging of avoiding responsible action kinda stinks. Source -- I'm not American, but I'm still free... free to do anything really. I also know I'm gonna get the derr derr 'murrica - land of the free - you ess aye, you ess aye, you ess aye response, and that'll just illustrate my point for me.

I live in the California high desert. They installed those cameras for about 2 years and then took them out. The problem- 1) the tickets come through 1st class mail so there is no proof the guilty party received it. 2) Traffic violations are a misdemeanor which means it has to have been done in the presence of an officer. That didn't happen. 3)I run a small business that has people driving around in my company vehicles. They mailed to ticket to ME and asked me who was driving the vehicle! Circular file!

There was a tv show in Canada back in the 90's called "Royal Canadian Air Farce". Shortly after photo radar became a thing they did a skit where one of the characters came into the house complaining that he got dinged by a photo radar trap and he told the wife to get the photo radar payment kit out. Wife comes out with a polaroid camera and a bunch of cash. Guy grabs the cash, wife takes a picture of the guy holding the cash then mails the picture as payment.

There is always a loop hole. Here in Texas, if a city cannot opt out of a contract for whatever reason, then the use of red light cameras is legal until the contract expires. That could be 10 more years. Here in San Antonio, there are a few municipalities that still use them.

In Minnesota, a traffic violation goes to the vehicle driver at the time, not the owner of the vehicle. Photo enforcement was basically ruled un enforceable in Minnesota, since 99.99% of the time. A photo never showed who was driving in a clear enough way to be beyond a shadow of a doubt. All you had to do was go to traffic court and say you weren't driving and they'd overturn the traffic infraction.

I have a '09 Honda Fit automatic. One reason I chose the auto is that with the manual the final drive ratio is different meaning the rpms are higher with the manual on the highway. I think they did this so the cruise control could maintain speed better on the manual without lugging the engine.
