I was a game tech at a D&B. We got virtually no training, and had to just figure stuff out on our own. We'd get in trouble if we tried to fix something, and failed, but also if we didn't try. Turning off games for infrequent issues was a big no no. We had multiple machines on the floor that had known issues, and we just had to credit people when they had the problem. It was immensely frustrating. Management only cared about the bottom line, and couldn't give a $@#% about guest experience.

So as someone that was a brand rep demoing the roomba j7+ i actually have some information about them. As you said the roomba doesn't replace doing actual cleaning. They're more made to take care of the time between the cleanings witch is where we would talk about the time saved since you can have them running on set schedules it keeps the floor cleaner until you get the real cleaning stuff out. The units themselves aren't too loud so you could even run them at night with the exception for the ones with the clean base. The ones with the clean base are pretty loud when they go to empty and charge since they have to be using the motor from a wet dry vac because they sound the same. Otherwise these are pretty the gold standard for the vacuum robots since they still get a lot of dirt out of carpets and the better units do even better. The j7 i got to demo was their new model for 2022 and that one had a camera to avoid obstacles like socks shoes cables and pets. It was also the first of their units to have a specific warranty against hitting poop so we were encouraged to talk to pet owners about it. The mapping is also much better on the higher end models. The higher end models you could send to specific rooms or even spots in the room because of the better mapping. One of the reasons they were able to clean so well compared to other brands was because they used two brushes and patented it so the other competing brands couldn't use it and it made it the best until the patent expired last year.

I've worked as a house cleaner for a few years and everytime I see a Roomba in a person's house, it's completely unused and covered in dust. Genuinely more dirty than the furniture we clean. It really seems like one of those Christmas gifts that someone gets, uses once, then never again.

I bought a secondhand 980 (the top-end, nearly $1,000 model from 10 years ago) off of eBay last year right after Thanksgiving. When school started back up in January, I didn't have time to take care of it, so I stopped the schedule and just let it sit on its charging station, likely slowly killing the battery from sitting at 100% 24/7.

Those kinda people likely got it as a quick solution for a house-spouse who refused to vacuum. The vacuums still require maintenance and consideration of things like socks, cords, etc and they likely weren’t willing to do that either lol, which is why it sat unused and also why they hired you ☺️ I hope you charged them through the nose ❤

I was also pleasantly surprised by my first Roomba, and have since upgraded during the black friday sales. Especially with cats, it's very nice that it keeps the floors free from fluff in between deeper cleanings!

There's a Magic Mountain "close" to where I live. The last time I went there, about half the skiiball machines were out of order and one if the ones I was able to play wasn't giving out as many tickets as it was supposed to. Then, suddenly, at the end of one of my games, it just spat out all the remaining tickets inside the machine. We asked a staff member about it and they were just like, "Yeah, we'll just refill it once it's done" and they let me keep all the tickets that came out. I got over 1,000 in total that day (which is a lot for Magic Mountain lol). If I remember correctly, I got one of those rectangular things with the pins, a finger trap, a cheap fold-up fan, and a handful of candy from the prize counter.

Speaking from experience, the most common issue with those basketball pro units isn't a sensor issue or anything at all, it's just the foam basketballs becoming dirty and blackened to the point that they only trigger the sensor if they're practically right up against them. Any chance the foam balls in there looked like they had been in there for years? And yeah, FECs across the board love to train through trial by fire and pre-existing knowledge, so it's basically a crapshoot on whether an arcade lucks out and gets a good tech who knows a bit going in and learns as they go, or if they have a good tech within an hour or two who can actually spare some time to do some training once in a blue moon

I keep waiting for my location to get the newer Oculus lol I should prob just get Ipads. WOW I had no idea the Brookstone robo vacs were so bad. That Roomba looks really odd. I have one of the beefy ones (purchased separately, not from the arcade) and my pets just ignore it or leave the room. It DOES love crashing as hard as it can into everything which is annoying and it should know better.

Even the roomba is a disappointment compared to what serious options can do. Roombas are considered to be falling significantly behind, relying on brand image mostly. The only thing they do well reliably is slightly above standard suction performance, but that does not make up for everything else. Prices seem high on the surface, but that's because you need to know where to look. Pretty much the latest and greatest can be had for less than $600. That includes both high-performance vacuuming and mopping, automatic dust emptying into the station (no need to empty the bin for weeks), automatic mop cleaning and drying, automatic mop/brush/roller lifting + extending (edge cleaning), laser + camera-based obstacle avoidance, and much more. Most importantly, a top-mounted spinning laser that scans and creates a map of the room to the millimeter, allowing the robot to know exactly where it is (displayed live in the app). The last one is present in even cheap non-roombas, unlocks a ton of customizable options, yet roomba refuses to use it.

Fun Fact: The iRobot Roomba Essential line is actually a rebadged Xiaomi E10. Not-So-Fun Fact: The Roomba Essential is 2.5 times more expensive than the E10. And, from what I've heard, the Essential isn't as good as current or even previous Roomba models, especially when it comes to mapping and navigation.

Surprised you got a model that had mapping, they're a bit pricier than the dumber models that bounce around randomly. Yeah, they certainly don't replace cleaning, but let them run when you're at work everyday, and it'll let you put it off for a while.
