As someone who's in and out of Houston Melee and did a great job of getting along with people and enjoying the game and competition, I've personally witnessed people from this scene say way more heinous and violent things about people than what Cilan has done on twitter (which is basically nothing since what he said could be taken as a joke, wasn't even addressed to anyone in particular, and basically would have had zero effect on anyone's life until someone arbitrarily decided to throw a fucking fit about it), and have heard worse stories, even right in front of TO's. Many of these people are still in the scene with no sort of repercussion. They really don't care as much about inclusion as they say, probably some of the least inclusive people on the planet in their backwards thinking. I'd wait for them to scour the web and find this very comment to ban me but I'll save them the trouble of getting rid of another passionate Melee player who brings dedication and money to the scene. They've tried their best to kill my passion for the game.

I agree with the principle of not banning people for religion for the sake of it, however the Ryan Garcia post does come off as condescending due to the last bit. I see an argument for that ban. There is a difference between someone admitting to being religious and saying " According to my faith, i believe men and women are meant to be married" and saying that you want to see people rot in hell for lifestyle choices.

individuals beliefs should remain as such... it is nobodies business what someone intrinsically believes in - as long as it doesn't infringe on the rights of others. ESPECIALLY in the realm of competition. If someone wants to air their beliefs to the public, they should do so in a way that does not attack or cast down others, but instead lift up and rationalize their own as they see fit. Saying something to someone's face is completely different than posting online, because at the end of the day, unless someone is specifically mentioned or tagged, viewing anything online is someone's choice. If they are offended by a public opinion, there is basically nothing that can be done about that (and shouldn't be done about that, trolls been trolling online since the 90's). Saying the exact same thing to another's face could and should be viewed differenly, as it is now directed towards a particular person, and they would have some reason to believe they are being attacked (maybe). That being said, in my opinion, certain opinions such as "I don't believe in homosexuality" doesn't need to be said at all. It should be private and have no bearing in the public sphere. In this scenario it is called for because of the discrimination from a competitive environment - but TLDR such individual beliefs should remain an individual's (and posting online about such things is basically airing private thoughts, which shouldn't be done, but is allowed because of free speech).

Truth is an aesthetic… I notice a lot of people posture and talk like truth is more important than anything else, but at the end of the day, most of people’s weird behavior is explained by social psychology. Subconsciously, people would much rather conform to the beliefs of their community than risk losing all their friends. I actually see nothing fundamentally wrong with that behavior when most political ideologies on both ends of the scale stem from a genuine place of wanting whats best for the most people. What am I on about? I think it’s unfortunate how anti-free speech left social media has become, but it’s understandable. It’s just power dynamics, and the same thing would be happening if right-leaning ideology happened to be dominant online. Making a pragmatic decision to “play along” to a slight extent to build rapport with a community you want to stay a part of I think is a respectable move. And you can cash-in on your rapport like spending out of a bank account to take a stand on select issues. For me personally it’s been a great decision I think. I try to choose my battles, if this is your battle, more power to you my man. Just my thoughts, much love

@@DIDHEJUST stepping aside to allow reprehensible behavior and treatment of community members to happen just to appease the social status quo is definitely NOT RIGHT. A good human being, when he sees something is very wrong and sees people being persecuted, will stand up and speak out against corruption. And the melee community is extremely corrupt to the point that it enjoys secular disasters such as Hax$ situation AS WELL as committing clear persecution against MULTIPLE religious competitors. I’m sorry man, but I don’t respect your choice to stay silent in order to be liked, I starkly disagree and think if you truly see something wrong, you should point it out, or watch as society degenerates at your peril
@DIDHEJUST6 ай бұрын
@@ssbMekkTotally respectable, I’m with you man. I wasn’t clear lol 1. I think there’s an argument to be made that maintaining enough rapport to retain community membership but “cashing-in” to defend a few important things might actually end up having more impact in the long run. Credibility (to the relevant people) requires some sacrifice, but is required to change minds. I want to change peoples minds, not drive them away, and that requires rhetorics and rapport, not truth. 2. When I try to notice the psychology driving people to believe certain things to keep their friends, I’m able to have more empathy for them. … and this is just the conclusion I’ve reached for me personally. Sometimes activism is the way to go, hard to be sure what will have the best result.

@@DIDHEJUST I disagree I think if people ignored rapport, which might change by speaking their beliefs, and they spoke unapologetically to point out what’s wrong, we would have a much better community. It’s the fear of ostracization and the appeasement that is the main issue when fighting back against what’s wrong. Too many people give in to social pressure and it’s a slippery slope to manage how much slack you’re willing to give. I understand your goal but I think there are better solutions. It’s worth debating regardless.

well if anyones faith(and the rules that come with it) over-write law and or ignore the knowledge that comes from scientific, reproducible experiments, they should be prepared to produce/reproduce some evidence that their faith is real. in germany we just struck down an extremist islamist group because they were proposing sharia law over a state(with no evidence of any god obiously) you have been a great inspiration for me as a smash player and i dont think you should be ousted from the community. i stillt think you are wrong with your beliefs. im saying that as someone that had to work hard(emotionally) to finally shed the bondage of dogmatic religion. best thing i ever did. i still wish you good luck in your endeavors. if you want to be respected, dont disrespect others(even if you think they are wrong in the head/sinners/whatever)

@@Ferigore look, the law in America 🇺🇸 clearly marks out the freedom of religion in the constitution. To me, religion is not a set of shackles, but it is liberating. I enjoy an absolute truth that I fully 100% believe is true and provides me objective morality I can rely on. Thank you for saying I should not be ousted, regardless of your views on my religion and religion in general, I’m glad you agree I should be allowed to practice my beliefs and certainly not persecuted for them. It is barbaric and dogmatic to actually ban people for their religious belief which then becomes ironic, I would be happy to set aside differences to play the game of Melee
@DIDHEJUST6 ай бұрын
@@ssbMekk Gotta offer my take on faith here. Of course believing something 100% is going to feel liberating, because you’re choosing to ignore the reasonable possibility of it being false. I think a reasonable thing to do is assign a credence to certain truths based on evidence and plausibility. For example I’d assign a 5/10% chance of something like an Abrahamic God existing (after weighing the evidence, etc). If someone out there thinks there’s a 99% chance of God being real on the basis of evidence and reason thats fine. If they’re open to discussion, either of us might be swayed to adjust our credence on the basis of new ideas and info. TLDR: One’s confidence in a claim should be proportional to the apparent evidence/plausibility.

It's not anyone's decision to tell someone what they need to believe. no one that is against the lgbtq movement in the melee community is telling people that are in the lgbt to stop supporting it. So why should you try to bother someone and try to change how they think about their personal belief system like religion? If Mekk thinks the flying spaghetti monster is his God he has the right to think so it's literally no one's business. As long as people don't bother each other and play the game none of what anyone believes in matters in the context of melee
