You’re wise , never risk what you can’t afford to lose. We all have experienced bad years just try not to brood, pick yourself up and keep going. You have many friends to ask advice and listen to you, thank you for being so honest.

Man that's tough!! One thing I always love about your videos is you share the good and the bad. I'm sorry you took a bath on these. If you're anything like me though you're like the farmer they ask about the lottery. "What would you do if you won? " "Farm till it's gone" One thing I always try to remember is that even in a bad year, with farming if you can't sell you can always feed yourself. Cause you can't eat money.

First time here and love that you got straight to the point and didn't drag me through a whole video of daily chores before you got to the point! Not that daily chores aren't important but I won't watch someone doing daily chores of basic feeding and gathering eggs that I do every day to get to the point of why I'm watching a video. Thank you!

I raised calves for 10+ years and did well on some ,took it in my the shorts on others. The last few years I have not been able to get it to work on paper so haven't even bought for 3 years. I work at a local Salebarn and our calf prices are just outrageous. Hol/Angus bull 5.00 a lb. Hol/aug hfers 4.50 + a lb hols bulls 2.50-2.75 a lb. Hol hfers ( a year ago we couldn't get .23-.30 a lb for the nicest calve you can imagine) 2.00 a lb. I have decided setting in the house when it is -20 below zero is my best idea. I am glad you found out the problem and the solution

As you said it is not the end of the world. I hope your o see you hold to the good heifers that you got, don’t sell, breed them and get the calfs and steers that you need to sell. Don’t sell the ones that you like. Wishing you all the best and at the end of the days it is your decision and I am not a farmer.

You did not get burned. You sold at auction, no other way to get a more accurate price based on quality of animals presented for sale. Bottle calves will lose you a lot of money, there’s a reason we cow calf producers sell them. There’s no profit.

Sorry they did not sell well. I sell my 50/50 bottle calves straight off the farm and have had way better luck. I got 1.65ish for 440 ish steers and 1.50 ish for the hiefers and do not have to pay for hauling or the sale barn fees. I sale by the head for no one argues about weight. I have 2 guys that buy most of them.Hope next round goes better.

you need to try raise,n those calves in pens outside one calf per pen. huts are the best!! u need sunlight to kill the pathageons if you raise them inside a barn. if one gets sick within hours in spreads through the whole barn . sun ligth is the only thing that kills pathageons

Damn man that sucks ass!! I've always wondered, I mean I've seen your videos about your cows giving birth, why do you buy bottle calves? Why not just collect the calves when a day or so after they're born? I would imagine that would greatly help your bottom line to not have to buy bottle calves. I honestly want to know. You are my go to spot for info about raising bottle calves for when I start raising my own.

i give you an A+ for reporting your hardship year finances. I wouldn't do bottle calves....they need their mothers...come join us cattle producers and breeders...skip the bottle calf and milk mixing. There's a reason why only chicken and pigs can be massed produced for packers...cattle need long time in the natural fields with their mothers...4 to 6 months...makes for a healthy no-cost born-on-ranch calf going to market for solid profits.

I'd stick with the bottle calves for a few more years. You just had over half your herd wiped out this year. Chances of it happening again are low. Save the money from your next two or three bottle calf raises and upgrade to some quality beef heifers. If you come across good looking heifers from your bottle calf herd, keep them.

I think selling them at 700lbs would have made a big difference but it would have cost me quite a bit more in feed so I’m not sure it would have paid. Another local sale had a Holstein steer sale the same week and ones the same weight as my angus x Holsteins brought 1.75. Must have just not been any buyers interested when I sold mine.

You mentioned hay as not much of an expense, why?
