I'm here to give you the biggest affirmation ever. Injuries happen; I know as a soccer goalkeeper, baseball player, etc., I've had plenty. You've just reassured me that hiking really is a sport! Even though Mammoth Cave didn't go as planned, you have had an absolutely incredible year. If you go back to your February 11 Q&A video (specifically 14:43-15:07), you did everything this year you had planned to do! From Utah to Colorado to Wyoming to North Dakota (thank you for the ND video, which helped me a lot!) to Minnesota and Wisconsin to the greatest state ever (Michigan!) to New York and New England, you did exactly what you set out to do, and by my count, you released more videos this year than any other year. You've been a bright light to me in the midst of COVID uncertainties, long work hours, elder care stress, and more. Even in this occurrence, you kept going with a positive spirit and still managed to get a lot of fun footage from it. Looking forward to all the travel guide updates on your web site, and plans for 2022 (and I'll admit I'm wondering if Alaska is in the cards for '22)!

Thank you for all of the support this year James! Your kind comments have truly been such a bright light for us, especially during the times where we doubt what we are doing or are overwhelmed. We had an AMAZING year (next video we will recap it a bit!) and are very, very excited for 2022. Some fun plans to be shared soon!

I'm looking forward to it! But first, I'm hoping you get some high-quality time to rest and recharge. You deserve it! It's well-earned! If I can add one thing, I just realized I can relate to entering Texas with a busted-up hand. :) Many years ago, just before getting my PhD in chemical engineering, I had a job interview in Houston, and I broke my right hand playing indoor soccer the night before flying down. I still remember ordering fajitas at a restaurant on Westheimer and then having to use my laminated interview schedule as a cheese spoon. (Oops) Nevertheless, I got the job and I lived in Houston for two years before living in Cleveland for two years, and then returning home to the Detroit area. Having a busted-up hand turned out to be a great icebreaker. 🤣

Thank you for sharing this side of traveling. A simple fall can cause such pain. I ask that you don't think of yourself as a " baby" when it comes to pain, because you are not (you're just human). I'm in my 60s, mobility challenged and in chronic pain. Hiking is something that stirs my soul and I always hike alone. It can take me 2 hours to do 2 miles, the difficulty and pain depends on the day, some days are worse than others. Some days hiking is out of the question. How fortunate you were to be with Adam and not too far into the hike that getting back to Brisket was doable in your injured state. I'm so happy to see you are on the mend. I’m soooo glad to see a Garmin mini clipped on your strap! And it’s on your 10 essentials. An acquaintance of mine from when I was volunteering at a dog rescue group went for a hike in April. Just a day hike, and he got lost - for two weeks. And up in the UP near Canada. Still very cold up there, no warm gear, no equipment, no food, no GPS. After two weeks they thought they were looking for a body but he was alive. He’d found a hunters blind for protection and ventured out every day for food and water and reconnoitering and was able to get back to it at night find memorizing landmarks on his walks. He wasn’t in great shape, his feet were fros bitten and damaged, extended hospital, possible surgeries and rehab. And no insurance. This was all avoidable if he’d had one little Garmin. I paid $250 for a used Mini on eBay. $12 a month subscription. So cheap. The peace of mind alone is worth it even if you never need it. (I never heard his outcome because, as I said, he was an acquaintance and he had moved away. I heard it through a Facebook post with no updates. I wish him well, he was a sweet guy, but I shake my head.) We are 75 and 81. We don’t do adventure hiking, we don’t go out that far, but we do have a B van and we go places where there isn’t reception. You don’t have to be a young adventurer to find value in a GPS satellite device. We might have a flat tire that we can’t change, we might have a medical emergency on the road. It’s cheap peace of mind.
@AdventuresofAplusK2 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is terrifying! Impressive he survived 2 weeks in those conditions! We bring our Garmin everywhere and use it a lot to keep family informed of our plans. Even on easy hikes you never know if you’ll need it! It’s worth every penny!

Ooof, what a day! Sorry you got hurt, Kathryn. Thanks for showing that travel and life on the road can be a struggle sometimes, too. Accidents like yours can happen so suddenly and unexpectedly. I get myself into trouble hiking when I am looking at the scenery and not watching where I'm walking. On the Corona Arch trail outside Moab in September I tripped over a rock, stumbled and eventually fell missing a bunch of cactus by a couple feet. I was cringing just hearing the pain in your voice Kathryn after your spill. Sorry you guys missed your cave tour. I hope to get down there one of these days. Glad Adam was there to take care of you. Merry Christmas from Rapid City South Dakota.
@AdventuresofAplusK2 жыл бұрын
Oh no! That trail could've been dangerous to fall on due to drop offs, so we are glad you are okay and missed that cactus. We love to hike, but often find that we stare at the ground more than the scenery so we don't fall haha. Merry Christmas to you too!

Hey guys... we've been watching you two (and Kona) for close to 2 years, starting with your Redding CA vlog, as it randomly popped up in our Googling about the area up here after we bought what will be our retirement home up around the Mt. Shasta area. Anyway, we stay up to date with all your vlogs since then but we occasionally go back to catch up with your older videos and this one really struck a chord, as I had a similar experience. We were on a planned 5-day backpacking trip here. We spent the first night 12 miles in and backing the final three miles to our planned lake destination the next morning I slipped on a rock as I stepped out of a small stream and fell on my hand, very obviously breaking my wrist. I soaked it good and long in the ice cold stream which I was sitting in after the fall, then my wife administered first aid, stabilizing it with sling and a foam sleeping pad we used for our dog. Then the long hike all the way back out, and another 2 hours drive to get to a hospital. Bleep happens... just be prepared as you can and get creative with what you have on hand like you did with the buff. For what it's worth, in this vlog you mention rethinking your first aid kit, and that's all well and good, but I also highly recommend you consider taking a wilderness first aid class. We led snow camping trips for the Sierra Club for 20 years so we had to refresh the wilderness first aid every couple years. It was very beneficial in us remaining calm and collected in dealing with my injury and the aftermath. We love your videos, you do an amazing job with the videography, the editing, explaining the history of places... and describing the pillowy food! :) Come back to CA sometime! M+A

Hi! Ouch! That does not sound like fun and we're glad to hear you're ok. We did revamp our 10 essentials kit that we carry on every hike, but it could probably use another refresh yet again. We've always wanted to do a wilderness first aid course, just have never found the time. It would definitely be a smart time investment. I (Adam) am a former teacher and coach and my major in college was movement science that included athletic training. During those years I went through several CPR and first aid classes and certifications. Although, I've been removed from teaching for 5 years now and college was over a decade ago! I still feel relatively confident in those skills, but a wilderness course would be a very good idea! Thanks for the reminder and a big thank you for watching!

Hello A+K, I caught up on your vlogs today. I enjoyed your trips to New England, Shenandoah, and D.C. Sorry to hear about your injury at Mammoth Cave, but glad you had each other. It makes me realize to be extra careful when doing solo adventures. I'm always impressed when I see people of all ages taking the trails and learning from them about how to safely navigate difficult areas, such as snow and ice. I just want to add that your work helped to encourage me to make the move to UT. Pulling up stakes from my home of 30 years took some doing, but I've spent the past few weeks settling into my new home and job. I've already hit up some of the high points near SLC, and am spending Christmas weekend near Canyonlands. May healing come to K, and a Merry Christmas to both of you.

Oh wow! Big congrats on your move Eric, that is awesome! We hope you’re enjoying it! And it definitely was a good wake up call to us and hopefully to others that you truly do not know what will happen and even the easiest trails can take you out. So we are glad we always hike prepared!

Ouch! Not the way you want any hike to go. Thankfully like you said you weren't too far from the car and civilization and at least it happened at the back end of your trip and "semi" close to home. I'm glad you're starting to feel better and that you're getting some much needed R&R. I love the DQ stop...ol' reliable when it comes to ice cream that's for sure. Oh and awesome work on the camp pizza! That Rao sauce is a solid choice when it comes to the sauce...yum. Happy Holidays!

Kathryn, I am glad that you are feeling better (mostly). You have broadcast an important message to your Subscribers: crazy falls can happen anywhere and not just in the tough trail sections! I personally have the utmost dread of wet leaves because they are good at hiding small ground holes that you can never see. Give me a jagged, exposed rough red rock or granite rock climb any day! :) I have had my share of scraps and injuries---that pain may be related to referred or radial pain. There are a lot of pesky, attention-seeking nerve endings in that hand--but I'm sure your caregivers have told you this. Heal up! Let Adam baby you a little while you have the chance. Merry Christmas...
@AdventuresofAplusK2 жыл бұрын
If we can teach anyone anything from this, being prepared when on any adventure is key! We always bring our Garmin, even on short, easy hikes because you truly never know what can happen. And this proved that! Wet leaves are the absolute worst! This time of year can be dangerous because of all of the fallen leaves.

So sorry you had a fall after so many challenging hikes ! I so feel for you ! We hiked the Alta Via 1 in the Italian Dolomites and went through some incredibly challenging trails. On our way to Cortina for a rest day, We were walking through a park and I tripped on a speed bump, fell and hit my head, injured my shoulder and knee. Once we got the head bleeding stopped, we had to walk two miles to a road where we asked someone to help us. They spoke Italian, we spoke English but could tell I needed medical attention so drove us to Cortina where the Mountain Rescue hospital took incredible care of me. The Italian doctor looked me in the eye and said “keep moving, but you won’t be hiking the Alta Via.” So, we checked into a local hotel Spa, where I recuperated with long walks, hot soaks, massages, and excellent Italian food. Needless to say, the plane ride home was no picnic. The hardest part of the experience however, was returning to finish the Alta Via where we left off the previous year. At 64 years old the body doesn’t heal as quickly as previous injuries ! That first hike represented a return to face the fears of falling again, yet embrace the challenges of picking myself up to continue the journey. It was challenging, yet an incredibly rewarding experience. The Italian Dolomites are by far some of the most beautiful Mountains in the world and the fall helped me reflect on how life can change in a minute. It forced me to pause and appreciate the little things that matter most, such as the love and support of my husband through it all ! Sorry for such a long story here, just wanted to relay my support and understanding as you continue your incredible journey. Blessings your way !

Oh my goodness! Ouch! Injuries seem to happen when you least expect them, like an easy trail or a speed bump! Congrats on going back to conquer it again! The Dolomites are our favorite place and we are so glad you enjoy it there too! I’m not going to lie, I’ve been a bit scared to fall again, but I know that the experience will only make me more careful of where I step and has taught me how to be extra prepared because you truly never know what can happen!
