I started ballet at 18 and managed to make a professional career out of it. I trained for 4 years before joining a smaller local company and eventually joining a company in Romania for a time. Now at 35 I still do some guesting but have found great joy in teaching.

Such a great interview! So many great topics covered here. On the topic of perfection that you touched upon - I read something interesting about Balanchine recently that said he wasn't a perfectionist. There were ballets he created that weren't really perfected and he didn't really mind. He just moved on to the next thing.

I did dance as a child, but never full time or intensely, I had got en pointe, but I was held back by a developmental foot problem, that was totally sorted by adulthood. I then had two children and started doing pilates for the first time, my teacher was ex NYCB and his comments about my physique were extremely complimentary, I basically have a perfect ballet body, but I'd never learned how to use it, which of course pilates really helps. I got inspired and looked for adult classes, I'm British, but happened to be living in the USA at the time, so the classes I got to go to were PNB open classes with amazing teachers, I absolutely loved it and I did muse about really throwing myself in deeply, just for myself to see where I could go, but it would have taken a major lifestyle change, putting the kids in childcare more (my visa didn't allow me to work). I loved what I did, one day I had an awesome class, it was a new school year so the kids had both increased hours at preschool, I felt so much potential and was keen to embrace that. The universe felt a bit cruel at that moment, I was unexpectedly pregnant, my ease in class that day was hormones and a slightly more flexible body that for the first time I could control. I was immediately wiped out with morning sickness and sadly never got back to that shape though I did make it to a few classes, that kid is now 13, so I'm well past that phase in my life. That amazing day was around my 29th birthday, so well past the 18 question in the video, also youtube was brand new, so a lot less information was available, it would have been a really interesting experiment.

Gosh that was interesting. I have a slightly similar story. I really hope you dance again, even for yourself. There are still other art forms too that you may wish to explore and develop your artistry and gift for movement. I also recently heard of an older lady, forties, in a contemporary company. Life is cruel, we need to take back the reins.
