Right my girl ily so as a severe social anxiety hot mess who is in second year of uni and actually managing to be happy, here's my BEST advice for you: 1) If you find yourself becoming sad, lonely, or generally homesick, in the first few weeks/months, do NOT act like you're okay because ""college is the best time of your life"", seriously, everyone has some worries and some shock in the beginning, so talk to people about it. Everyone else in college is feelin' it. No shame. 2) Remember to balance your life. If you're a person who overworks yourself, make sure you make space for REAL rewards. Not 'I get to eat dinner!' or 'good job! you get to sleep!'. Seriously, when you manage to do work (especially when you do well), make room for nice things. 3) Similarly, (altho ur probs an expert at this, you have a planner), keep your work balanced in a way that works for you. 4) If you're a lazy heck, listen to your professor's nags. If you're a workaholic, do not listen to them. It'll only work ya up. Those exaggerations (you should work x amount of hours a week) are not for u. 5) Make sure uni is a place you can have fun in. Bring your games, make new 'alone' hobbies if you need to, make sure you have stuff you can do alone, go to social events and clubs (seriously, even just sitting around being quiet will help loneliness). 6) If you get second thoughts about your course, have troubles, talk! to! your tutor/professor! They are usually nice people, and they don't just help with work. Become mates with your tutors and they will help u in all aspects of life. 7) You're amazing and you can do this! The initial shock of independence WILL subside, but don't be scared if other people seem to be moving on faster. It will happen, jus give it time. You're a star and college isn't always ""the best years", but it doesn't need to be! It's an experience, you will grow in all directions (become a giant blob), and you will do great! (this is so long, sorry... I jus like you gurl, I wanna reassure, also I'm from the uk so apologies for any inconsistencies with ur education system)

Oh, to add to this - don't just let people into your dorm/flat/apartment who are "friends". Sounds weird, but I got robbed and had people I didn't want crashing over to the point where I actually had to change the locks. Making boundaries for yourself and your new space, whether roomates, new friends or neighbors is super important. I lost 4 shirts ,several miscellaneous items, and DAYS of sleep to so-called friends.

NBCCD Fashion grad here! Congrats on getting in - it's a great school and such a wonderful, creative environment. My best advice with the fashion program is to not get discouraged if it feels like you're not learning everything as fast as you'd like. For me it seemed like when I compared what my friends in other disciplines were doing, that they were able to jump right into the fun stuff whereas in fashion we had to learn so many basics before getting to make the things I wanted to design. So if you see the potters getting their hands dirty in clay, and the jewellers doing cool stuff with metal, and you wonder why you're still doing sewing samples and learning basic pattern drafting, don't worry - you're building a really solid technical base that will allow you to make pretty much anything you can imagine once you get to your final year. So be patient and it will all come together before you know it. Best of luck!

When I was naughty as a child my grandmother would make me re-tread her two over lockers as punishment. We lived in the middle of nowhere so she got creative with punishments as there was no tv/phone to take away 😂

I'm not gonna lie. Moving away from home is scary. I straight out dropped my entire life to move down across the country to Disney World because I got hired into their costuming department. Definitely have mom send you care packages! My mom sending me bits of home is my lifeline for sure. But you'll also grow SO SO much and become more independent which is hella cool (at least it was for me) plus having your own apartment that you can fill with ya nerd stuff and decorate however you want is lit. Try and set up a skype/movie night with ya fam after you move. It'll help you transition and keep ya a bit sane as you find your footing in the near area.

Hi I don't usually comment on Vida but I just wanted to give you a tip on changing the color in your surger. When you already have an colour thread in the machine instead of taking the thread out and rethreading it all over again you can just cut the spools out and tie the new colours on to the ends and after awhile of surging the colour should change to the new thread. Sorry if this was confusing I just wanted to give you a tip😉

I moved all the way from my parents house in Australia to the UK to study - yup about as far from my family as I could possibly move. I was homesick for a few months, but that went away eventually. My advice is to make a Skype night for you and your family - for me it was every Sunday morning, and 6 years later still living in Europe I still do it every Sunday without fail. Phone calls are great too, but a Skype chat is different, feels like I'm sitting in my living room with my family while they eat dinner and nothing has changed- It really helped a lot. Otherwise sign yourself for social events. I am introverted and like my own company, but I think it really helps to break routine and distract yourself - plus college friends become your second family. Take it as a growing experience, not every day will be great, but you will become a stronger more resilient person - best decision I ever made. Best of luck Pixie!

I was not disappointed by the amount of cats! As someone that is about to graduate from fashion design school let me give just a quicky lesson about sergers, and fashion school. 1.) They take some time to get use to, and thread so don't get discouraged at first! It gets easier with practice! 2.) Sergers give a type of clean edge to woven garments, and sew together knits. The more threads the more stable the seam, and if you have a double needle with 4 threads then your knit garments will be very secure! 3.) More than likely you'll be using industrial machines at school so pay close attention to the tension and stitch length on those machines so you can mock them on your personal machines, and not stuck in the sewing lab all the time. 4.) Save everything! Especially your technicals and fashion illustration bodies!! Nothing is worse than having to start over from scratch at the end of your schooling because you didn't save work that you could use as a base to bounce off. Have fun, and good luck girl!! I'm rooting for you!!

Moving out is the best thing ever! You get to have total control over your life, no annoying parents, you can live how you want. I moved out as soon as I turned 18 and was of legal age. It's fantastic, you'll love it! I have never once felt homesick. Uni is hard and you'll tumble. I've struggled with depression and anxiety throughout my studies. But I can tell you that finally moving out is SO liberating! It definitly helped my depression a lot. Good luck!!

Congrats on your acceptance! I moved across the U.S. (east coast to west coast) to go to college and now I'm living where I went to uni. If you're not living in dorms, try to connect with people by going to campus club meetings or welcome events. Meeting people at our dormitory and during our "welcome week" was the main way I established a new support system after moving to a new state 3000 miles away where I literally knew no one haha. Also, the homesickness didn't hit me until later since I was having a lot of fun in the first few months, but definitely skype with your parents and friends from back home a lot if you're missing them! But still be sure to meet new people because that's the most important part of feeling at home in a new place :) You're going to be in a fashion school so I'm sure you'll find lots of cool people with similar interests as you. My advice for moving out for the first time is to just breeeeathe and also to keep in touch with your family! When I first moved out for college last year I called my mom almost daily and it really helped me to miss her less, and she also made my dog bark on the phone for me so that I wouldn't have to miss her as much either! Phone calls and facetime are your best friend if you're worried about missing people from back home.

First of all: congrats on getting into fashion school! This is amazing and you can be so proud of yourself!! Now onto the whole moving out thing... I remember being terrified to move out too (well not exactly terrified but I kept catching myself finding excuses for not doing it...?) mostly because I was worried I wouldn't be able to take care of myself. It's not like I don't know how to cook or do the laundry or whatever but I tend to forget to eat and weird stuff like that; plus I'm kind of scared to be alone. Now I've been living on my own (actually with my partner) for almost 1 year and looking back most of the things I was worried about weren't really an issue. I actually eat more healthy than I used to do and I just get things done and organize and make things work in ways I never thought I could. I was actually going to uni for four years already before I moved, so it wasn't completely new... but still. My tips for moving out are: - try moving in with friends (or someone else you feel comfortable with) if you're worried to get too lonely - don't be scared to ask for help (be it moving furniture or getting your lease explained, the more you know the more secure you are and less people can try and screw you over) - keep track of your spendings (food, etc - I make a list each month, collect receipts - but maybe you have to do that when you're self-employed already anyway), this way you can keep track of your monthly needs, can plan better, and so on - try to make your new place comfortable. it's scary and hard in a new enviroment first but it's even harder when you don't feel home at your new place at all (it may take some time though, don't stress yourself over it, either!) I don't know if these tips work for everyone but this is just want sprung into my head just now... I really enjoy your vlogs and videos (though I've been a silent observer till now) and hope you keep up the great work. Your will and excitement to learn and improve is truly inspiring and it always makes me happy to watch what you're up to (and your cats of course, let's be honest)!

But after awhile its pretty exciting being out in the world, exploring it on your own! After 5 years I moved back to California, but to the opposite side of the state. Worked for Lush for two years, if you left the Experimenter in a moist environment like a bathroom it probably got a little damp itself (internally) which can deplete the foam's longevity. Keep em in a dry environment, some folks wrap them in cling film/seran wrap and find it helps to keep them good (if you're the type to stock up in one big lot instead of buying and using them straight away). 😊 Congrats on all of your success, you deserve it. 💗💗💗

The sleep could be hormonal imbalances. You may want to ask your doctor. I had that issue as well and it’s fixed with help from my doc. It’s worth it when you are in college or working full time, or both like me, to be less tired.

My main piece of advice would be, if you decide to share an apartment with friends...make sure you set some very clear rules and boundaries. Don't make the mistake of assuming that everything will work itself out. You have to be active when it comes to maintaining healthy relationships with roommates. Delegate chores and make plans for when one or more of you gets into financial trouble (because it WILL happen).

Pro tip: Once the surger is threaded, you can just tie the new thread you want to the end of the old thread with a flat knot and pull on the threads. The flat knot can go through the whole thing, except for the hole in the needle itself, so it's much easier to do that then to re-thread the whole thing every time you want to change colors.

I was sent to school abroad when I was younger and initially it literally killed me. My #1 advice would be that (as a home-body myself), make sure you have a solid support system because when you're away from your home, your friends will be who you lean on the most for mental stability. Hopefully, it won't be a crummy year for you when you initially start, but it gets better if you keep your mind to it. :D It'll be full of adventure, I promise.

Yeah, I'm planning on entering Journeyman too next year! I'm doing Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy, so a lot of vinyl work that I'm not looking forward too. The only thing I won ever was when the Hal-Con symphony gave out Symphony NS tickets and I won workmanship there. I haven't used a serger, but I do overcast the edges with my Brother sewing/embroidery machine.
