Really it shouldn’t be a problem like that unless you make it part of FSD physics - interactions with warp fields and whatnot. I doubt the cone would have that big an effect on something using Newtonian thrust physics to get off a surface. That being said, the pilot should literally boil in their suit when the planet passes through the cone!

I remember staying on that planet for HOURS as the white dwarf looped around the sky over and over. Hands down one of the coolest places discovered in ED so far. It actually gave me goosebumps the first time the dwarf came overhead and the gravitational lensing warped the stars around it. Stunning place. I was about to comment about this. Although it makes alot of sense to get the light to bend around black holes, it's a really nice touch to do this with neutron stars. Even if it takes such extreme coditions just to notice it. Most of players stay tf away from neutron stars and glare just covers it, Fdev could have skipped that modeling and almost nobody would have even noticed. Wish Fdev paid this kind of attention fo balance.

It's not really the cone effect that causes this. As soon as you are within the exclusion zone your ship will burn up and explode regardless of where you are in relation to the star's cone(s). Always stay in the SRV when landed! :) After visiting several times over the past few years I've found the best time to hop on to the planet is when it's reached about '7 o'clock' with regards to its orbit. You land just after the planet has passed the far cone, but before it hits the exclusion zone limit. Landing before it hits the far cone (i.e. 6 o'clock area) is more dangerous. Same goes for when you should take off.

@DblDg1252
@DblDg1252 4 жыл бұрын
@@giantnerd14 an actual Dyson sphere is a shell around a star built to collect all the energy radiated from it, so taking that and turning it into a planetoid that goes through a jet cone is already fairly far removed from its original definition. As far as the radius of the sphere, I dont believe there are any limitations beyond the technological limitations of the civilization constructing it.
@TheShadowSlayer007
@TheShadowSlayer007 4 жыл бұрын
Collin O'Toole the radius of a dyson sphere is only related to the materials used to construct the sphere. Solar winds put out a lot of pressure especially when trying to fully surround a star, just imagine a fire cracker being held in someone’s closed fist. The stronger the tensile strength of a material the closer you could construct your Dyson sphere, only problem as you build closer is the inherent increase in thermal energy each part would get. Too much heat and everything begins to lose structure which then makes it weaker as well.
@giantnerd14
@giantnerd14 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheShadowSlayer007 I usually think of dyson spheres that were going to be used for habitation, since to build one you basically have to harvest all the other matter in the solar system for materials. So unless you can move power in an interstellar fashion they are really only useful if you're also going to live there. So too small of a radius will make it uninhabitable.

This has got to be a great place to visit if you have a VR headset. Imagine watching the star head towards the horizon, give it a lovely brush with its cancer cone, and then vanish until next time. I bet the place looks even more gorgeous with a couple of graphics mods. A second shadow from the main star would have been even nicer. Probably not outside the scope of the engine to provide more than one light source and shadow casting is it?

Great video... but a clarification: At 10:00 you referred to the “age of periapsis” and noted it seemed to be incorrectly static, perhaps set at jump-in time. That would be true, except if you look closer you’ll see it’s the _“arg_ of periapsis”, short for _argument of periapsis_ (and, as an astronomer, you know the rest but I’ll describe it for others), one of the eight orbital elements written as _ω_ (small-omega) and in stable orbits expressing what one might think of as the “orientation around the primary” of the orbit, literally expressed as the angle from the ascending node towards the periapsis. So an _ω_ = 0° means an orbit that makes periapsis at precisely the North-South intersect, while an _ω_ = 180° means it makes apoapsis at the same point (so the orbit is “swung around” the primary by 180°). It’s an interesting orbital element mathematically, in that it is both arbitrary (in the sense that its changing has no effect on orbital stability, just the relationship of the orbit to the primary) and can’t be fully expressed in the normal orbital parametric equations because the orbit becomes undefined at _ω_ = 0°-but it’s a hole singularity, and just an artifact of how the Keplerian equations are typically set up. You can get arbitrarily close to 0°, and nothing actually goes skewey with the orbit at _ω_ = 0°. You can define the orbitals in a less-common way than the traditional Keplerian equations to fix the issue if you must, but it’s often easier to just fake it and deal with the discontinuity. If KZbin lets me post a link, a useful interactive can be found at www.geogebra.org/m/nNZXRUY3 - or if that link didn’t show, Google for “Geogebra Basic Orbit Around a Planet Maxime”.

I also noted his lack of knowledge regarding the verious orbital paremeters that E:D lists, NONE of which would be useful in determining the position of the orbiting object in the orbit. Worth a couple rides around. If you can get a good LZ the first ride you can watch the planet falling into it and it disappears over the horizon at periapsis and the second time around it'll stay hidden most of the ride till you get back to it and it appears on horizon and races overhead as you pass periapsis again from the same spot.

Elite Dangerous is a horror game. There are other games that frighten, but no game fills me with such existential, cosmological dread as E:D. And I bloody love it for that.

'Argument of periapsis' is a static orbital parameter. It is one of 5 elements that can describe just an orbit. AoP describes how an orbit is rotated in space by measuring the angle its periapsis makes to the orbit's ascending node on a reference plane. A 6th element can describe the current position of an object following the orbit, usually this is the True anomoly.

12:34 - 12:50 That's one of THE best ever things I have seen in Elite Dangerous. Going to have to try and head out there and experience this for myself at some point. Awesome!

I found two more worlds like this in Odin's Hold. Unfortunately, I goofed returning from a two month expedition and got trapped and killed by a Neutron Star while trying to supercharge. I failed to realize that the entire cone was inside the gravity well. Fortunately, I bookmarked the two worlds as they are 'undiscovered' so I will be heading back as soon as I finish engineering my explorer Conda. BTW, I was wondering what would happen if the cone scorched the surface while you are parked on it. I guess that answers my question. I still wonder though if the planetoid would shadow you if you were on the dark side while going through the cone.

If you land on the right area of the planet you can create an incredible effect where the star starts off visible in the sky, then crashes down to the planet, then suddenly bounces back up above the horiozn as a huge ball and cuts a swathe across the landscape with the near jet cone. A lot of people have posted videos of the latter effect and the fun lensing it causes, but I've not seen anyone view the flypass from the "sunny side" of the planet, which is what's required to create the full show. Due to convenience and the fear factor almost everyone lands their ship on the dark side of the planet, missing half the fun.

Damn nice video D2EA! Have you tried not dismissing your ship but having it powered off? Would the neutron star affect it then?

This reminds me of the original screenplay of Interstellar written in 2008 by Jonathan Nolan. In that version the protagonist and side characters get to an icy planet that orbits a neutron star, which they don't know until they're inside the planet's many caves. Once they realize they can get baked by radiation they have to get out asap. It's a well written script even though the final version was amazing.

Ah White Dwarf stars... my nemesis. Far trickier than Neutron stars for jet cone boosting, and the boost yield makes it hardly worth it (over a regular FSD boost). I generally avoid them on long journeys away from places where I can perform full repairs!

I really want to be able to walk around on a planet similar to this this and witness crazy things like what we just saw on the ground. I know that in reality the person would be obliterated by the heat and everything else, but doing missions or just exploring on foot with something like this above you would add wonder to the exploration aspect. At least to me.

I've heard they're updating it so you can actually do just that sometime this year... when they do, I'm redownloading. And relearning how to play. KZbin has randomly recommended exploration vids to me lately, now I'm itching to try a career in exploring.

@@dustinthewind3925 Yeah! I already preordered it! I'm just hoping we aren't too limited on where we can walk. I know there might be things like planets/moons that are too hot for our personal suites to withstand. I love exploration. It's my favorite. I might be boring but I like seeing different planets and just looking at how cool it is. I've always wanted to be on foot and really experience the size of ships and just chill and watch space. Very relaxing. :)
