Hey, my husband was out of work from the tech industry for almost six months this year and he finally found a job for much less pay because he was getting desperate. A little advice here, it's taking longer to get a job for a lot of people right now so I would advise not to spend your savings on an expensive trip, buying anything big, just keep saving because as things are uncertain, you may need that money to help you pay your rent and bills for a longer time than usual. Unless you come from a rich family, then okay but I would still save your cash as much as possible. There's tons of videos out there just like this one where people have been laid off for months and months now. Best of luck out there to everyone searching.

That's the sad reality of working for Tech companies. Never be too loyal to any company, only to yourself, you are replaceable at work but not at home. All the best in your new journey.

Emergency savings make sense in a normal job market where finding a new job takes three to six months. In the current shit-show, it makes no difference at all. He got paid an enormous salary and even had a few patents but this kid was SUPER SHARP. Anyway he came back home to visit his dad, paid his dad's house off and then told me he didn't like his career and was going to retire by age 35. I told him that's exactly the time to get out. In the 1960's, my grandmother bought a home in Los Angeles and paid it off in 11 years working a single first shift 7 hour non-management job at McDonald's. That house is worth $1.1 million today. I treat the fact that you can't do that with a single job at McDonald's today (and even higher-skilled jobs) as a sign that the US and its dollar has been weakened to the point that it no longer represents an economy of workers. It is an economy of investors. How wealth is generated has changed, but the education system does not teach nor reflect that. No matter what anyone tells you, there is nothing wrong with you, your skills, or the the industry(ies) from where you worked. I have only seen this video you made, but I can tell you're a wonderful human being, so I wanted to send some encouragement. Don't let anything or anyone invalidate you and how hard you worked. I think that the only thing you need to do is spend more time investing into yourself and less time investing into others in an economy that is increasingly unable or unwilling to appreciate workers like you.

I went through a a lot of emotional ups and downs trying to get my career established, but I just kept going and everything turned out OK, but it was trying at times. Initially, I was looking for a position in the automotive industry, but I was unable to find anything, so I decided to pursue any reasonable job that I felt that I could do, which led me to becoming a PM. UX positions are luxury hires. This is this generation’s technical writer which went extinct in the 2010s because manufacturing moved overseas and technical writers abroad were cheaper. I would recommend moving to another position within a tech company if you find another opportunity. Most technical writers i know went into project management which is a bit more stable while some joined the sales team. The world is always changing and adaptability is the only skill that keeps us desirable to businesses and corporations. Good luck.

A great illustration of what Doctorow calls “enshittification.” UX ensures quality, and our monopolies no longer even pretend to care about delivering a quality experience. They squeeze out turds that we are forced to buy because they’re the only choice in town, as corrupt governments of both parties allowed them to buy up the competition. That’s also why inflation is so bad. There’s no competition so the cartels that control most industries hiked prices in unison.

I graduated college in 2008 and had a tough time finding a job. The whole traveling while unemployed reminded me of these dark years because that is exactly what I did. I think traveling can help with your mental health but find a good balance between "getting away" and "fulfilling responsibilities" because time spent not focusing on sharpening your skills (hard, soft and interview) can hurt you when the market turns around. You might be out of work longer than you would like to be.

Assuming such alarmism was true (it’s not), that would also result in the total collapse of the economy. It’s workers who spend (and borrow for big ticket items like houses and cars) that keep the economy going. A 50% reduction would mean a 50% (or greater) decline in revenue across the board. Just about every company in business would go bankrupt in such a situation and every bank would fail due to mass defaults.

I was gonna say.... I think AI is going to destroy a lot of tech jobs. I would disagree. UX is extremely important. The iPhone just sucks. So many apps suck. So many web pages suck. Windows sucks. I am a software developer and I hate software. Or rather I hate the developers of the software. I’ve thrown my iPhone so many times. The problem is the developers. Only really intelligent and creative people should work in UX. Jonny Ive needs to be fired. If you call yourself a UX developer you are already unqualified for the job. You probably like buttons and menus labeled with acronyms. You know what UX developers don’t understand? You can communicate nouns with icons but you can’t communicate verbs with icons. That is UX development 101. If you want your design to be idiot proof, you need to test it with idiots. The designers, in love with their work, should not test it.

Many times they even dress so poorly and have bad hairstyles that it makes me wonder how can they design anything if they have such a poor taste. In this video thou I cannot complain about bad taste in clothes or style. But what I have noticed that when you see a real ux person you know it. Her/his style is very good and though out. And you need to be at 1% top taste to design something.

@JamesParus often times in engineering, you'll find that the very brilliant people don't "look good". A lot of the people posting these layoff videos look great with cute hair and clothes I think because companies are going back to the old school engineering teams so they can actually start building real stuff again.

Being laid off is a huge awakening for me. Never have loyalty. If your company ever starts laying off people (and you were spared this time), immediately start looking for a new job. Stop spending and save. Savings will be the difference between you having to take a poorly paid job just to get by, and being able to lounge around waiting for the right opportunity (or enjoy a hobby in the mean time). Stop wasting time. In this age where everyone seems to have less friends so are going out less and such, it's probably best to start a side hustle or just do an extra part time job to either save for a house or just build up savings to prevent anxiety if you ever get laid off. This isn't for everyone, but it's definitely something to think about if you feel like you're wasting time.

Agreed that plane ticket to Europe will be 2/3 what unemployment pays her for the month

You are assuming she is on her own. You don’t know where she sits financially. I say go travel, you are only young once and she might not get to go again. She might get hit by a bus. Go!

You're doing the right thing. Tech was in a boom. Now it's in a bust. That's how bubbles fueled by cheap credit go when rates get raised and the money spigot gets turned off. Since tech is largely financed by venture capital, it's particularly susceptible to this phenomenon. When money is cheap, VC's have lots of eggs to spread out among lots of baskets. More critically, they're willing to wait to see which eggs will hatch. When money is tight, there are fewer eggs and baskets, and those eggs better start hatching fast. In short, the jobs are just not there now.

More asians being laid off. Make sure you pay for your own student loans. We shouldn't have to pay your bills

Wow. Two pages to the incel and three pages before the racist comment. Must be getting pretty hard out there for bottom-feeding edgelords. Y’all are falling behind in your game.

Hello girlie sorry to hear. Similar thing happened to me and like you I've been through various stages of emotions and questioning myself and what I am doing with my life. How are you explaining the laying off to prospective employers in interviews without judgment?

I get into arguments with my gen Z son. He thinks tech work and corporate is the way to go. He’s said when I get out of college I’m going to be rich lol …. I’m in the trades I’ve never been layed off I make what 33% of the population makes…

Can't blame him. Last few years tech has been pushed down everyones throat. Especially gen z. They were told if they don't get a STEM degree, whatever they learn is useless. He would have been right 4 years ago. But that's how quickly things have changed. Show him the thousands of videos of tech workers who have been laid off and can't find a job 6, 7, 11 months later. Show him the videos of the young tradesmen bragging about their job availability, stability, pay and benefits.

Let him do what he wants! If that drives him, let him be a man and make his own decision. You can suggest things but don’t evangelize blue collar work that’s is a set of laws or leverage against unemployment.
