100% here for more late 20s + 30s humans sharing their life. you're def not alone in any of these life things, thank you for sharing with us 🧡 I don't know if I'll be laid off but I had a whole disability thing change my relationship with my job and have a gut feeling life is about to catapult me into a different path, so hearing all of your honest experiences/advice about starting over after getting used to a job is comforting. even though I too don't care if I get a hallpass to start over, it's still scary and nerve wracking. but also so exciting! as always, looking forward to what comes for you (and me) this year :)

Michelle, I've been following your channel ever since you first moved to NYC. As a fellow marketing girl in New York, I relate so much to you and appreciate how open and honest you've been since the very beginning of your post grad career. I got laid off in 2020 and I was SO scared and unsure how of I was going to turn things around, but it ended up being the best thing for me in the end. Amazing things are coming your way soon. Best of luck with everything :)

Being laid off from a job that you don't really like is the BEST. And I can't emphasize this ENOUGH, as an almost-38 year old who's been laid off from enough start-ups to write a book, EVERYONE is replaceable. NEVER give a job too much importance in your life. You should view it as a paycheck, and that's it (unless you're doing something like a doctor or teaching kids how to read). Did they also give you health insurance through May?
@MichelleandAline9 ай бұрын
ahhh allison!! thank you so much for this comment - it's so reassuring to hear from folks who have been through similar situations and are now thriving. i do have health insurance through may thank goodness so i can get all my annual appointments sorted before then! 💖

Welcome to the club lolsob! I was laid off at the beginning of the month from a digital media agency, as part of several waves of layoffs, and as someone in their 40s 🙃 I think it’s put me on the path I really want to be on, although it’s brutal regardless. I’m glad you have a good attitude about it! Enjoy the break and I’m sure you’ll figure it out.

I got laid off last year and the following six months were extremely stressful, but now that I'm on the other side I can recognize that it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was very unhappy at my job but it was also comfortable and easy so I was not motivated to look for something different. My new job pays me less but it is so perfect for me in every other way. Some days I can't believe how the stars aligned for me and it never would have happened without those awful six months last year. You seem like a very smart and capable person and I'm sure something will work out for you. Figuring out next steps might be uncomfortable and difficult but that's how we grow. Here's to new opportunities!

This sounds so awful. I love America but when I hear stories like this I think why do the companies get it so wrong. I live in the UK and we are so fortunate to have such a different process. I'm sorry to hear what you and your colleagues went through. Hopefully you find something bigger and better out there and hopefully you're in the head space of everything happens for a reason! I am so sorry this happened to you and the anxiety it caused. I will say, you are not alone in the “figuring out the next step” time of life. I am about to turn 28 and honestly have 0 idea what I’m doing haha. I actually thought about mastering in media and communications and have been questioning it A LOT! So this kinda helped me and has provided a different perspective…so thank you! And thank you for sharing because it makes me feel not alone. Sending you the best wishes and here’s to a beautiful and bright future for you and all of us who are figuring out what’s next 🤍

I had the same thing happen with my skin, started getting really severe acne at 29. When I went to the derm, I was going on and on about how embarrassing it was and how I feel like a teenager and how I was doing everything right skincare-wise. She told me that it had literally nothing to do with me, and everything to do with my age. Apparently it's super normal to get acne in your late 20s-early 30s. Solidarity! Also I loved this vid, wishing you the best moving forward 🥰

As a Swedish person I’m always shocked and horrified at the way employees aren’t protected at all when it comes to redundancies and layoffs in the US. Over here what you’ve just described is illegal. We have very strict rules and laws when it comes to how you have to communicate, negotiate and handle everything from how you announce that there are redundancies coming up, to the support you’re owed afterwards. I’m so sad you didn’t get to choose for yourself and when you left, but I’m sure better things are coming.

would love to see how you figure out what you want to do!! I also got laid off from copywriting and am having a bit of trouble figuring out what I should do next (and actually, I'm 31) ......... but I'm leaning towards getting an easier job so I can focus on writing fiction, which I love! But I'll probably never gain much money from that, so it's also kind of difficult to justify and kind of scary, because what if I decide (maybe when I'm getting sick of rejections for publications) that I do need a career? Anyway, whatever the job, I guess the most important thing is that you're having fun day to day and can pay your rent!

I just want to show my support for your creativity here on youtube... I really enjoy the way you and your sister tell your story... it comes across very genuine, grounded and very well tuned to yourself. I think if you want to create art in this phase of your life through youtube, it will be very fruitful. Because that theme of reconstructing, and returning to yourself will forever be universal. Finding peace and relaxation within your means and your location is the art of living, right? and I see much of that content in youtube, but i think you can bring a new voice to that... with the element of Saturn Return. I know you will find your way forward to better, more aligned, and well paying jobs.

I understand what you are saying about the robot email. But it's really a good thing that your manager, which is sounds like you had a great relationship with, wasn't the one that had to give you the news you got laid off. Yes you know her but think of the position that would have put her in. It's an awkward meeting for most people, non sadistic people.They try to keep the meeting with neutral parties because it's just hard to do, especially if you have ties to the person.

I'm convinced that "Girl Boss" era was terrible for a large portion of your generation. Not that being a boss that's a girl/women is bad. But it was a façade. A false promise. Hustle culture is incredibly disingenuous and I think a lot of people were sold a bill of goods that wasn't true (and now are overcorrecting with soft life/quiet quitting/extreme "self care"/I don't dream of work content). But, it sounds like you are coming out of that and have a more realistic idea of the general workforce. As others have said, do something you like and be good at your job and to your co-workers, but keep in mind that all jobs are just that...jobs. Unless you own the company (and even then there are backend things to all jobs that aren't fun), they will replace you in a heartbeat. Don't give yourself over to any job or any boss. And more importantly, find something that fulfills you outside of your job. I like my job ok, but I love my life. My job allows me to enjoy certain aspects of my life (travel, my husband and daughter, buying excessive books on kindle, writing, small home improvement projects/DIY's, gardening-that makes me sound super old). I realized a long time ago that 90% of people aren't going to have that magical career we are all fed by the media (whether you grew up wanting to be Ally McBeal-I'm a lawyer, a social media girl boss, an interior designer, working in the art world-talk about low pay, no benefits and only suitable for people with trust funds career, etc), but what you can do is find a job you don't hate (but don't have to love) and cultivate the rest of your life. Again, you don't have to LOVE LOVE LOVE GIRL BOSS your job to LOVE LOVE LOVE your life. Good luck!
